Hello there, I am indeed enjoying being here! though I apologise to anyone if I missed a reply. as newbie its gonna take a while for me to get used to it here. I think it's double GREEEATTT ;)

During the school holidays we are seeing our grandchildren a lot. We put a selection of food on the table and my eight year old granddaughter has started copying me. She will construct a lettuce wrap with whatever is available. Yesterday, she made a lettuce wrap with cold cooked chicken, cucumber and tomato with a couple of Quavers added for crunchiness.

I am glad it helped @Meels19 the other thing that I think is worthwhile is taking up a new hobby art or craft that will keep your mind occupied so that you do not dwell on your diabetes.

Extend the new adventure.

Hobbies I have plenty. My work keeps me very busy as well - I won't dwell on it I've had ME for 22 years and have got by with that due to me trying to keep in front without it overtaking me - I have no time to dwell, but thanks for your comments  Kind regards Meels

Hello Meels and welcome, you have received some great advice so far from some of the more knowledgeable members, you have come to the right place for help and support. I was diagnosed in February this year, aged 62 and I agree it is a bit of a challenge to change the habits of a lifetime. However, I joined this forum shortly after diagnosis and can honestly say that it is the best thing I have ever done. The advice on here is excellent and I have managed to lose 2 and a half stone and my BG is on track. Stick with us and you won't go far wrong, have a good read and learn as much as you can and ask as many questions as you like. Everyone on here is friendly and helpful. You will soon get the hang of it, in a few month you will be giving advice like the rest of us.

Good luck and take care.

Hello there Mazzer, never a true word was spoken, so glad I called by and so happy with everyone's lovely comments. Good luck with your weight loss and lets hope the lbs start falling off me now, that's what I want, to be able to come of the medication. I felt so unhappy and sad at having this illness (undiagnosed for 6 years) I moved home in November and within 2 weeks my new surgery confirmed what the itch and strange feelings I was experiencing was....the itching has gone and whilst I feel awful, these last two days I am trying to get my BGL on an even keel...so I don't feel as dizzy, then I was a dizzy blonde in my youth lol - Take care, kind regards Meels

Baked beans = Devils poop :hungover: (to clarify l hate the things)

Just to say don't fall into the trap of weight makes you get diabetes as you seemed to imply. It is a symptom not a cause :) It is like saying because l am bad tempered, cuss awkward and bloody minded it means l look like my avatar to the side.

Hello there, yes I know what you mean for me though it is about my weight and they way I've eaten for 60 years! I love baked beans btw - devils poop made me smile though :) kind regards Meels

@Meels19 ...................... If I have a curry, I usually use pearly barley as a rice substitute or use Morrisons converted brown rice. A serving of that only has 15g of carbs which is perfectly OK as a main dish of the day.

Yorksman - I am going to Morrisons today (it's a bit of a
trek, but they appear to sell my preferred rolled oats. I know. I know.), and I'll be looking for the converted brown rice. How is it marketed? Is it a Morrisons' own brand of something else?

Sorry to be a pain.

I am very grumpy though as they didn't have my Jumbo Oats. I don't like all these cut up/ground ones. There's no texture and it goes like gloop! :banghead:

Hi @Meels19

Welcome to this forum.

I'm T2 and on metformin like you and discovered this site in March this year. On reading up on all the different options, I chose to follow a low carb/high fat eating regime as it made the most sense and seemed to appeal to my taste buds and lifestyle.

It was the best choice I made and I began to feel the effects after Day 1. I can't face a full cooked breakfast either so normally have Greek yoghurt with a selection of fresh berries - blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries. Its filling and satisfying and is the most like the breakfasts I was used to having - muesli with yoghurt and fruit.

I had to re-educate myself to get used to high, but pure fat foods, such as cheese, meat, butter and cream, after a lifetime of believing they were bad for me and would make me fat. The opposite is true as I've lost a stone in weight since March, which has been effortless, but secondary to feeling well again, with restored physical energy and a lifting of brain fog. I'm also loving my meals, not just eating them, but shoping and preparing them too. My favourite quick meal is a nice steak friend in a pan with a large onion, mushrooms, sliced courgette, black peppercorns, with cream and fresh herbs stirred in before serving. Served on a large bed of wilted spinach (no need to cook it - just pour several kettles of boiling water over the spinach in a collander until it wilts). Its a one pan meal, very little preparation and washing up, but big on protein and goodness

We are never too old to re-educate ourselves and improve our situation. I'd like to think that you will embrace the changes in your eating habits, especially when you see the improvement in your health and general wellbeing.

Good luck and do check in here regularly for help, advice, support and encouragement.

I was recently diagnosed and have had readings as erratic as yours. Decided to give the LCHF thing a go and genuinely feel better already, readings, not great, but significantly better than last week. It's worth a try, especially, when the balanced diet you thought would work isn't Also, you feel really indulgent when eating cream, butter & cheese without guilt ;). Good luck!

I know - amazing concept! I thought I'd be starving without carbs, but I'm really quite full. I have dry roasted peanuts as a snack if I feel hungry before a meal, and the odd blueberry if I fancy a sweet. I'm soaking up all the advice on here and I'm getting quite excited about trying out some of the low carb treats. Having been on so many diets where cheese is almost akin to pure poison (happens to be the hardest thing to give up) this is a delight. I'm looking forward to getting my BG under control and exploring what fruits I can manage, but so far managing to resist the temptation to eat all the apples in the bowl (they would have been gone normally, but they prevail - ate about 2 a day before).

I've decided to see this as an allergic reaction to carbs & sugar - which it is I suppose, try reminding myself that allergic reactions tend to become more severe from exposure, so try to avoid where possible. You'll find alternatives and with the fabulous support from this community:nurse:, hopefully, we'll get the BG levels under control & start a new healthier lifestyle.:)

Hello Meels19 .

I felt mad and furious too when was diagnosed Dec30th 2009 .
Ruined my new year too!

After battling 'off' both pneumonia then septis was hit with the
ruddy diabetes diagnosis .
So fully understand how you must have felt .

Jacks reply has had me in stitches with his - Who can we give it to ?
We also smile and laugh thro the heartache and tears of it all here .

With regards to the lettuce leaf comment you made .
Try this one I use and DO often .

Lettuce Parcels !
Clean some largish lettuce leaves .
Choose all your favourite salady things .
Cheese ,ham, chicken, boiled eggs, grated carrot , tomatoes, celery,
cucumber slices, diced onion, even spring onions too, peppers,
radishes, beetroot etc etc - plus any really favourite relish or salady dressing .
(light drizzle of it optional/own choice kind of thing)

Plonk whatever you fancy into a lettuce leaf - roll them up .
Place on smallish plate (this makes them look a lot more on a plate trick)
Munch away on them and enjoy a new world of living on a lettuce leaf !

They can suprise you as they're really tasty and do fill you up too .

Warm welcome to the forum too . :)
