Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

France has a great range of food, but it is very heavy on sugar (think of all those bakeries with those amazing displays of cakes!), and being in Normandy, everything has butter and/or cream added to it! I have a huge amount to learn, and yes, healthy-for-diabetics is exactly what I need. Thank you so much!
Lucky you! Butter and cream are on the "yea" list for T2's, and being in France, you're certainly blessed with the cheeses. ;) https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html will give you a bit of an idea of what works and what doesn't for a Type 2 diabetic when it comes to foods, and yeah... It mainly goes against everything we ever learned about what is considered healthy. The conflicting information's easily solved... Get yourself a meter. Check before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite, you're looking for a rise of no more than 2.0 mmol/l. A meter has no agenda, follows no dogma, it just tells you whether you respond to food badly or no. I thought the low carb, high fat diet was insane, as it went exactly against everything my hospital's dietician told me, but.... Her food made me hit the 20's. The low carb diet kept me in the normal range. Just see what works for you eh.

Good luck!
Jo

Hello. I was diagnosed type 2 about 2 months ago...prescribed Glicazide and have been told I will transfer to Metformin soon.
I am finding my glucose levels are fluctuating between 6.5 and 7.5.
Feeling okay... just would like my levels to remain below 7. Been told I can't reverse but I am going to try to get this into remission...
You might want to check what your blood sugars are doing two hours after a meal, I'm guessing you're only checking in the mornings? All in all though... Medical professionals still say T2 is a progressive condition. It doesn't have to be though, it can be halted in its tracks and you CAN get your blood glucose levels back to normal. Bit of a bald statement to make maybe, but lots of people here have done it, mainly by changing their diet, though some might need some metformin or somesuch to help. https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html might help some.

Hello folks, not sure it's nice to be here, but we'll see.
My name is David, 52 yo male. Which country am I from? Well l was born of Scottish parents in England and now I live in Wales. So... Britain!
Currently I live in Cardiff, been here since 2005 and work as a university lecturer in biological chemistry so I'm actually fairly familiar with the sciency side of things around 'ere. Married for 9 years nearly but been together with my wife for 23 years nearly.
Just got diagnosed as type II yesterday so am reeling a little but it wasn't entirely unexpected as it's crept up on me for some time. Guess I've been in denial before. I'm already quite active, I walk about 40 miles a week currently so will need to be looking at my diet. That's always been my point of failure so this will be an interesting and sobering journey. Currently a little paranoid about whether I have complication symptoms or not. Had a couple of blurry vision episodes lately... but was it the lense of my glasses (which I sat on accidentally a few weeks ago)? I walk a lot so is the blister I had a few weeks ago something to be concerned about, it got better eventually but I did walk on it a lot anyway...? My toes are a bit numb currently, but then, I did just walk 5 miles into work! Guess I need to talk to my nurse, but my GP surgery could only give me my first appointment in almost a months time (July 4). So full of anticipation and worry currently.

Looking forward to chatting with some of you on occasion.

Hi, I'm Richard, just joined this morning as I was told yesterday I'm in the pre-diabetic range following a fasting HbA1c and need to be start being careful and limit sugar intake. Got another test in 6 weeks.

I'm 53, work as community mental health nurse and live with my cat George. In my spare time I watch tennis, enjoy pub quizzes and play the piano and clarinet.

Any ideas for quick and easy recipes to lower sugar would be great. Cheers

Hi Richard. I too was diagnosed in the pre-diabetic range getting on for 3 months ago, I am 67.

What I have done, which seems to be working is cut out anything processed, anything with added sugar, reduced portion size and lost weight. I have lost about 11kg and am now in the middle of the BMI range for my height. I am now on an average of 5.5 mmol\l over 90 days using an Accu-Chek meter. I only check once a week fasting and post meal; sometimes randomly out of interest.

I am still eating wholemeal bread, brown rice and wholemeal pasta, just watching the portion size. So for example with pasta my portion size is 75 grams. I neither smoke nor drink and cake, biscuits, sweets etc. have not crossed my lips now for 3 months. I have not obsessed about recipes just watched what I eat and when, 6 hours between meals.
So I have gone from the bottom HbAc1 of the pre diabetic range, 42 mmol\mol, to 34 which is some way below and pretty much fine. I still have 2 kg to lose to hit my target. I will be looking at another HbAc1 test in a month or so and certainly expect it to be well within the normal range. I can then experiment with a tentative relaxing of my diet whilst still testing regularly to see what effect that is having.

Just one comment; there is no such thing as a "fasting" HbA1c; an HbA1c gives an average over the last 3 months or so. An instant fasting glucose test gives a one off measurement of your glucose level at one particular moment in time, it does not necessarily give an accurate overview of what is going on but is good for showing how your body is reacting to individual meals.

So, get yourself a meter so you know what's going on at any particular moment in time, Watch your diet for anything with added sugar and just eat "healthy".

Just as a caveat, everyone is different, and my "success" may be a reflection of letting myself go a bit over the last couple of years, I have now reversed that relatively easily.

All the best, Chris.

Thanks Chris. Not sure why the doctor asked for a fasting test then, maybe it was because of cholesterol being tested.

Must admit I've been feeling very depressed today and have not been fun to be around. Really hoping I can turn this round, having talked to my next door neighbour today it sounds a bit of a bleak existence if you're type 2. I'm used to going out and enjoying my meals, especially curry.

Thanks again.
Richard

You do know hackers constantly scrape sites for details like this? Here facebook and one or two more will give enough detail for someone to get hacked/cloned

I perhaps didn't explain myself well enough. A fasting test is useful and a diagnostic for diabetes but is different from a HbAc1 test which gives the average glucose level over 3 months or so.

Did you get a figure as to what the fasting level was? Did you also get a HbAc1 level?

As I said in my previous post there is every reason to believe that if you are "just" pre-diabetic you will be able to turn this round with a bit of willpower and some simple life style changes and still enjoy eating out. I turned mine around pretty quickly but then I don't drink and have a bit of an obsessive personality so when I set my mind to something I tend to stick to it religiously. Can be a double edged sword though!

If you've got both the figures for fasting and HbAc1 that would give an idea as to where you are and what you need to be doing. I would invest in a finger prick tester and do your own fasting tests to begin with along with post prandial (2 hours after main meal). If you can put your levels on here including the ones your doctor did, if you have no objection of course, you may get more targeted advice.

Chris.

Thanks Chris, no you explained yourself fine, I'm just not sure why the GP requested a fasting test when HbA1c doesn't need to be fasting, but I'm also on a statin so maybe it was due to that, to get the lipid levels.

I understand that my level was only just over the threshold.

Thanks for your advice and support, much appreciated

Hi Just a quick introduction, I will def answer the questions another time as they look cool

I'm Paris & I was diagnosed as prediabetic in April this year, with a Hc'thingy' test score of 45. I consider myself healthy; an ex-runner who still works out periodically, I eat healthy & I've completly cut sugar from my diet. I love walking and swimming, and my average daily steps is 14,000. I'm 50 and I've been told that it's because I'm of African Caribbean decent. I'm only 62kg and I'm 5ft 8.

I'm sad that I've been diagnosed & I'm frustrated that someone who considers themselves healthy has to deal with it, but I am slowly accepting it.

I'm on the NHS prevention programme, there are only 3 slim people on it, myself and two elderly people, everyone else is overweight, so the focus seems to be on weight-loss (which I don't want or need).

I hope to meet people who, like me, can learn to manage this without loosing loads of weight.

Sorry if I sound negative, I'm not a negative person *I promise). It's lovely to meet you all, this looks like a good forum. ✨
