Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

I’m in Northampton to, been put on tablets about seven weeks ago. And not much else when it comes to support to be honest
i think the standard of care has been so poor for such a life altering condition and one that can be detrimental if not heavily supported by our healthcare teams

Hi everyone. I'm Mark. 49 year old Irishman, living in England. Originally from Dublin, but now living in North Herts.
Just got my Type 2 diagnosis on May 25th, so I'm still reeling a bit, but determined to approach it positively.

Married - with 2 teenage daughters, so life is very calm and serene at home! Our 3 cats are pretty chill though.
Big fan of most sports, particularly football (Spurs) & rugby (Leinster). Love cinema, live music, and cooking.

I work for a small charity as a volunteer manager, which has been my area of expertise for some time now.

Really hoping to use this diagnosis as an opportunity to lose weight, get healthy and maybe reverse the condition.
as a fellow Dubliner, i wish you the every best in achieving your goals

Hi My name is Kate Brown

I am currently studying a masters in globlal health but previous to this I have studied Medicine. I am very interested in Diabetes, particularly the topic of potential of diabetic remission and prevention. I have joined this forum as a HCP and researcher to understand more about people living with diabetes experience

I am from Ireland. I think my friends would describe me as extroverted, organised and trustworthy. I am definitely a microsoft girl. My new favourite music genre is latin.

Hi yet another newb here, prediabetic after going below the threshold last year. I am so lucking to have an NHS Clinic that does low carb and keto diets, marvellous.

I'm 68 have a heart condition and lung condition so exercise is difficult.

I've dropped the big carbs, spuds, pasta, rice and bread - all varieties, being a Neuro Divergent person I can have or don't have things, it's really difficult for me to be moderate or to sustain anything once a target is reached. Awaiting help from a pyschologist with this.

I like that there is a lot of information out there but I think it's so easy to get bogged down, I wasn't looking to do a degree in biochem!

Onwards and upwards.

Hi I am new here. Diagnosed with Type 2 DM 13 years ago after sudden onset of Bells palsy, which is when they found I was diabetic; on Metformin, Diglutide, Dapagliflozin. HbA1c was intitially improving but over last two years it is getting worse and latest value is around 69 mmol/mol. Three days ago, I developed binocular horizontal diplopia. MRI was normal. Now on eye patch and will be getting prism glasses on Mon/Tue. I do love my Whisky and find being on a diet difficult. But now, I am determined to take the bull by the horns and to this end, I have ordered a Dexcom 10, because it will be motivational for me to stick to a diet. Anybody here with experience of Dexcom 10? I am going to abandon all booze; maybe just the odd glass of wine and cut off all sugary stuff. I do exercise regularly; play golf almost whole day and monitor my stress and sleep using Whoop device. Any advice would be much appreciated. Oh! I am 64 years old; retired five years ago.

The hardest part of giving up booze is not actually giving it up, it is making the decision to give it up

I have to say that I was very fond of a drink - I'll leave the rest to your imagination - but a few years go, I think it was Christmas 2013 or 2014 there were discussions and suggestions on TV about having a dry January, so I would have been 63 or 64

I thought 'I'll have a go at that'.
Then I thought Well that's not very long, I'll do it until my birthday in April
Then I thought Oh blow it, I'll do it for a year --- and I did

I saw in the New Year with just one can of lager instead of the usual collection, and gave away the rest
That year was simple - water to drink with meals, blackcurrant & soda in the pub
I lost weight, saved money, and felt much better

When the 12 months was up I had a drink, but nowhere near as much, and I can take it or leave it.

Hello, and welcome, @Nageshrao

It might be worth starting a new thread with your specific questions, as answers to them are likely to get lost in the middle of this general thread. (I am a dexcom G6 user and love it).

Once more, welcome.

Kind Regards
EllieM

Hello, I'm new to the diabetic thing. I am not on any kind of meds at this time. I'm only watching what I eat. Hopefully that will be enough. I am a 57 yr old female. I am married have three grown children and 5 grand kids. I am still trying to wrap my head around this entire thing. I have cut out a lot of things that I loved. I had these items so much that I joked about them being the number one food group. Now I am paying the price. I only found out that I had high bs when I had to go to the hospital and was diagnosed with four infections at the same time. Now I am very careful what I eat.

Hi, just joined. D2 since 1980's but never really taken a real grip on it. Need to change that hence getting data from all over as I can
Male
Born SA emigrated UK 1970
Family
8 gchildren so far
Ancient
Metformin, Semaglutide, Lap band, various courses. Lap band couldn't get on with it

Looking really to keep on straight and narrow as have lost weight drastically before and hence controlled D2 but always relapsed. Now prospects of Insulin given me a kick start, I do not want all that hassle if I can help it.

Hello,
Well, I had tingly toes and wondered what it was although had a suspicion.

GP took bloods then rang back a few days later to tell me my diabetes count (?) was around 190 and my cholesterol was 7.9. He sounded very serious and freaked me out enough for me to start shaking a bit. Didn't tell me 1 or 2 just asked for more bloods and a face to face appointment this Friday.

I'm 53, about a stone or two overweight and little exercise. Family history is a bit rubbish, dad died of heart attack at 52, mum at mid 70s. I guess I'll know more on Friday but a bit scared, bit confused and gutted my food and drink intake will be changing radically. And still got that stupid toe feeling lol and some shooting pains in feet and lower legs.

It's all very new and scary at the moment so I'm here to learn wth I'm doing and how to cope and what I can and can't have to eat and drink.

So hard ignoring the biscuit barrell

https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html should help some with what to eat, while you're getting your feet back under you. Get your blood sugars back into the normal range, get started on vitamin b12 to help your nerve endings, and hopefully the neuropathy (the tingling) will subside in time. If you have a hard time ignoring the biscuits, try distracting yourself with pork scratchings, cheeses, walnuts and nice cold cuts... If you're munching on something, it's easier to avoid the cookies until you're used to it. ;)

My name is Ruth. I'm not IT savvy enough to copy all the questions and answer them!
I have been on the edge of diabetes for a few yrs and fell off the cliff/was diagnosed T2 about a year ago.

My husband had diabetes and through bad management (his own & medics) developed major complications inc neuropahty, amputation of toes and other leg below knee, retinopathy , kidney problems etc etc. Went to meet his maker 6yrs ago.

You'd think I would have heeded the warnings, but ............. any way here I am having just found this forum.

I'm wanting to follow the Newcastle diet or similar but having trouble persuading the medics who put me straight on to metformin even though I was only just over the cut off point when first diagnosed. Also they are pushing me VERY hard to take statins, but I'm refusing. (Cholesterol 5.6 but bad ratio of "good/bad").

I'm a creative person, love painting, crafts, singing etc. None of which are particularly physical, so I'm trying to up my exercise.

I'm a Christian, ( faith filled NOT religeous) and I try to live my life according to God's rules for living.

I enjoy life as much as I can and want to do so as long as possible!

Hello. I was diagnosed type 2 about 2 months ago...prescribed Glicazide and have been told I will transfer to Metformin soon.
I am finding my glucose levels are fluctuating between 6.5 and 7.5.
Feeling okay... just would like my levels to remain below 7. Been told I can't reverse but I am going to try to get this into remission...

Good morning, everyone!

Well, what can I say? I'm Nadia, diagnosed as Type 2 diabetic about four weeks ago, so I am a complete newbie! I am on Metformine and Périndopril (yes, the spellings are correct!), and I think I am having issues with one of them, unless having an upset tummy is normal with diabetes. :(

A bit about myself to bore you all over your morning cuppa...

I'm 56, have two daughters in their 20s, one dog, two cats, and although I'm British, I currently live in rural Normandy, France (hence the French spellings of the medication above!). I work as an independent TEFL teacher and love my work. I love cooking, reading (when I get the chance) and letting the dog take me for walks (he's 11 years old and still doesn't understand that the lead is for me to control him, not the other way around ).

I was found to be diabetic when the Lions Club and the French version of this site, did random finger-prick tests at a local supermarket one Saturday. The reading was high, so they gave me a letter to show my doctor, had blood tests done next day and was called straight back in to see the doctor. The rest is history.

Although my French is reasonable, I'm struggling to cope with some of things involved with this new thing happening to me, and to be honest, I haven't been given much advice from my doctor, hence joining you! My biggest issue at the moment is finding the right kind of food to eat. I thought I had a reasonably healthy diet, but obviously I was wrong! I've tried to look up online what is good and what is bad (apart from the obvious bad things) and the results are just too conflicting. Any advice you can all give me on this would be incredibly welcomed!

I'm sure that's bored you all enough for one posting, but happy to answer any questions if you have any! Looking forward to getting to know you all, and to one day being a contributing member, rather than just asking questions.

Bonne journée tout le monde!

Nadia

I'm sure your diet was healthy (you are in France after all!) but sadly "healthy" for non-diabetics isn't the same as "healthy" for diabetics. I was in the same situation. But I changed to healthy-for-diabetics and all improved dramatically. May well be the same for you - it has been for many of us here, though some need extra help from medication, which is nothing to worry about - we are what we are.

Have a good read around and come back with any questions. No question is stupid, no question is irrelevant, and we love to help.

France has a great range of food, but it is very heavy on sugar (think of all those bakeries with those amazing displays of cakes!), and being in Normandy, everything has butter and/or cream added to it! I have a huge amount to learn, and yes, healthy-for-diabetics is exactly what I need. Thank you so much!

What about starting a new thread with your questions on food? I'm sure people will be happy to chip in. :)
