Hi,
My husband has type 2 and we are trying to follow a low carb diet.
He starts work early in the morning and has very little time to have breakfast before he leaves the house, so cooking eggs, etc is not an option.
Currently he has 2 weetabix with full fat milk. Is this ok? If not, what alternatives are there that don't involve either any prep or fruit (as he has plenty during the day).
Thanks.

Two weetabix is definitely not low carb.
But if it's OK depends on how his blood glucose reacts to it. Does he use a glucose meter to see what's happening?

If not, what alternatives are there that don't involve either any prep or fruit (as he has plenty during the day).
Be careful of the plenty of fruit during the day, most fruits have a lot of carbs and many of us find it raises our BG more than we like.
Full fat (10%) natural Greek yoghurt is the quickest breakfast I can think of, you can spoon it right from the tub if you're in a hurry.
Microwaving a plate of yesterdays leftovers doesn't take longer that preparing weetabix.
Frying a couple of eggs takes 3 minutes, he can do it while brushing his teeth. Or he can set the alarm one minute earlier, preparing weetabix takes about two minutes.

An omelet or crustless quiche can be made beforehand and eaten cold, as can hard boiled eggs or egg mayo, with or without bacon.

Slices of ham and cheese straight from the fridge make a breakfast as well.
Or avocado. Just slice in half, add salt and pepper and eat. Doesn't take longer than weetabix.

I can scramble eggs quicker than the kettle boils. I presume he’s having tea or coffee?

eggs, as many as you need/like
handful of grated cheese
half teaspoon of mild mustard (you don’t taste the mustard but it does elevate the taste - trust me)
salt and pepper
Optional - any old prepped veg or cold meat or even tinned fish you have laying around or fancy as optional bulk out.
optional - Dash of cream for richness and to add more filling natural fats.

put the pan on the heat, add a knob of butter if your pan sticks, gather your ingredients (whilst you fill and turn the kettle on)
break eggs directly into the pan and stir robustly with a silicon/wooden spatula
add the rest and stir again til it’s cooked to your desired doneness -remember eggs continue cooking in their own heat after you take them out of the pan. Stir the coffee or fish the teabag out of the mug.

minimal carbs and keeps you full for ages.

Or a rough and ready version of this no grain granola https://www.ditchthecarbs.com/grain-free-granola/. I use whatever seeds and nuts I have available. Add some Greek yogurt and it’s breakfast.
@Rachox has a porridge alternative.

then there’s eggs and bacon type muffins made low carb style which are grab and go

or skip breakfast and have a bigger lunch.

Thanks for the tag @HSSS , hi @Daisy1234.
Every day I have this keto coconut ‘porridge’ with a few fresh strawberries. Gather the ingredients, just chuck them in a saucepan, and stir while cooking on the hob. Once you’ve memorised the ingredients it takes the same length of time to cook as my coffee machine takes to brew a coffee.

Thanks all. He doesnt have time for tea/coffee, literally bathroom, downstairs, weetabix while getting stuff into his bag & out the door!
So, whatever the alternative would be needs to be prepped & eaten within less than 5 mins or prepped the night before.
I've ordered a tester to see what weetabix does to his blood glucose, will test it at the weekend.

Some slices of cooked meat, leftover sausages, a chicken leg would all be low carb - but scrambled eggs with cheese is a two minute prep time.
Maybe setting the alarm clock a few minutes earlier would make all the difference. I always allow myself time to eat in a relaxed manner and have coffee with cream as it sets me up for the day, and I ensure I get a good nights sleep if I am to go out - though these days I do sleep so much better than before diagnosis.

Spicy food which is too hot. Nasty people who have no idea on your life journey but feel the need to comment and be cruel.
Slices of cheese with slice of ham rolled takes seconds and quite filling.

Daisy, you could cook 2 boiled eggs hard, high meat % sausage. Or get a thermos flask like container, think there are some to make porridge, yes I know carbs, but I also put in my porridge a scoop of mixed seeds, chia, poppy, sesame and chopped pumpkin and sunflower. I buy mackerel fillets from supermarket, already cooked. W’rose have pepper ones and smoked. Admittedly I have 1/2 slice of ‘my home baked’ toasted bread

I microwave scrambled eggs, fine art, short bursts of power

I calculated a few days ago that two weetabix plus 200ml milk (any kind) works out at around 30-35g carbs. The weetabix is about threequarters of that total.

Fruit is almost always high in carbs - eg one apple is about 20g.

My preferred breakfast is full fat Greek yoghurt, with or without a few berries or stewed rhubarb (stewed with a little sweetener), but I’m away from home and it is very hard to find unsweetened yoghurts of any kind.

My fall back which I am now using is hard boiled eggs (I do 6 at a time, in advance) with a few slices of cucumber and a tomato. Sometimes I’ll add mayo, others not.

if that doesn’t float your husbands boat, how about a couple of cold, precooked sausages, or crispy bacon? Those can even be finger food. Cold, precooked chicken thighs is also good, but the fingers get messier, which might be great if he is packing his bag at the same time.

slices of ham or beef between 2 slices of cheese, makes an instant, enjoyable breakfast 'sandwich'.

and there is a very expensive, but also very nice, brand of low carb cereal called Magic Spoon. Last time I looked you had to buy from the US, but there are discounts for auto shipping.

Recently I have been mixing coconut yog (approx same g of carbs as plain yog) with Purition vegan shake powder (which is very low carb, dairy free, and has a good mix of nuts and seeds). Stirred together, they make a kind of puddingy texture.

Alternatively, cook up a batch of sausages and then microwave some in the morning, for finger food while getting ready.

I do appreciate that Cereal For Breakfast is a hard habit to break, but really it is just a mindset - and a fairly recent mindset at that. Kelloggs only created Cornflakes around 1900. Before that, people broke their fast with anything from last night's leftovers to veg from their veg plot, with porridge or gruel being commonplace. Low carb porridge (reheated in individual portions in the microwave) is as least as easy as cereal, possibly easier.

I read that shredded wheat by Nestlé is a good alternative (fibre 12.5 g) no sugar

In the UK the carbs which are fibre are listed separately to the carbs that are not. You are right that in a 100g there are 12.5g of fibrous carbs that will pass right through.
But there are 66.7g of carbs that will turn to glucose once digested, so a 45g serving would be 30g of carbs or the equivalent of 6 to 8 teaspoons of sugar

I do this as well. I don't do the short bursts of power so that's a good hint but they turn out ok and it's quick. I also microwave bacon between two bits of kitchen paper. Weetabix spike me and since I weigh my milk when I do have them the scrambled eggs can be done just about as quickly

At 67 grams of carbs per 100 gr this is not low carb at all, it's about the same as Weetabix.
Okay thanks

If he’s used to a bowl of cereal every morning, it might be hard to get him to switch to a completely different breakfast like eggs and yoghurt. You could try Paleo’s grain-free vegan granola. My favourite is their Berry & Almond variety: 14.8g carbs per 100g - and it’s delicious.

Milled flaxseed makes a lowish carb base for breakfast. I make a flaxseed-based porridge with two heaped spoons of milled flaxseed to a spoon of chia seeds plus chopped nuts or seeds, add some cinnamon and a little salt. Cook in hot water (I microwave for under 2 mins) then stir in a spoon of coconut milk and serve with double cream.
At first I added some oat bran, then slowly reduced that and increased the chia seeds.
