Medtronic vs tslim

Hi

I've been on medtronic for 9 years using porcine insulin.

I really wanted to try closed loop and am currently trialling the omnipod 5 (thank you hospital! ). However it's not going well as the algorithm really doesn't seem to work with my insulin profile.

I'm now trying to work out what to do. Unless i can get the closed loop part to work (I'm going to give it 3 months) I'm not wild about the omnipod. I thought wireless would be great but the pod is bulky as I'm an average height female and the controller weighs a tonne and needs to basically be on you as it has to remain within 5ft. Also the libre 2+ is a bit rubbish as keeps on disconnecting and I can't link it to my phone and watch.

Hospital are fine with me switching back to medtronic but one if the things I wasn't keen on was the weight of the pump and the mio advance sets - i much preferred the old mios pain wise. Also I used the medtronic sensors a long time ago and found them really painful plus they needed calibration. I suspect some of that has changed but would be interested to hear how they compare with libres. I've tried dexcom and found it fiddly and slightly more painful than libre.

I've been looking at the tslim and it feels much lighter. The sets look like the old mios. However I can see lots of bad reviews on the filling the cartridges.

Can anyone share their experiences particularly of the tslim?

The other thing I'd really like is to be able to go through the airport scanners without patdown. Omnipod without closed loop seems to allow that but does anyone know if any others do?

I need temp basal and extended bolus but all seem to have that on the manual mode.

I can only advise on the t:slim and Dexcom. t:slim does have extended bolus, and the latest sw allows stacking of extended bolus too for say if your having a meal over a number of hours. Temp Basal is manual but what a lot of t:slim users do is set up another profile with a set % they would maybe use for temp basal and then move profiles when needed. Some have multiple profiles for this purpose. Using profile change allows looping to continue and no need to go manual.

Sadly you are correct with airport scanners - this applies to all wired pumps sadly.

Filling the cartridge is very easy, it does seem painful at first if you were using pre-filled cartridges before but you need to fill an Omnipod manually so not much difference, you get used to it.

I've been using Dexcom since it launched 13+ years ago and really have no issues with it. Hope this helps.

I've been using the tslim since March and agree with @Chas C 's comments. The cartridge filling really isn't a big deal.

I now use a G7 with my tslim which I like because I can preinsert it and both have zero warm up time and also avoid the worst of the warm up inaccuracies (I find my cgm often reads low for the first day after insertion, but I suspect that is just because I am quite sensitive to sensors - I had to stop using the libre 1 because I became allergic to it.)

For me, I have to manually give extra insulin if I'm over 10 because the algorithm assumes your ratio of insulin to mmol/L is the same whatever your bg is, and I am definitely more insulin resistant if I go high, but other than that it works well for me and is pretty good at preventing hypos.

I just got rid of the tslim in exchange for the 780.. I had the tslim 4 years

The form factor of the tslim is better, but bg control on the 780 is far superior (for me)

The filling of the tslim is ok once you’ve done it a few times…. But again the 780 wins in this area it’s much faster and easier…. Also the 780 allows just car cartridge or set change without the need todo both

Also 780 has the option of a 7 day wear set

In my mind the 780 with simplera is far superior to the tslim in most ways

I am on third pump , animas , Medtronic , Ypsomed , was going to choice the T.slim but the wait was months so I opted for Medtronic 780 but was also very lucky to have Simplera sensors , the algorithm on 780g is better for my erratic BS and so glad that my diabetic team advised the 780g . I think I liked the feel , look and weight of T Slim .
