I drink a lot of Earl Gray tea a day, with a minimum splash of milk in each. Today, I have realised that milk is quite high in carbs - duh! Can anyone suggest a low carb milk I can use please, just for my tea, as I don't use milk otherwise? I don't drink anything else but tea, apart from an odd glass of flavoured water, so am flapping a bit. No tea, means I will struggle to find something I like to drink, but I can't keep on the milk as it is pushing my daily carbs too high for my liking.

About 2-3 grams of carb per 100mls and tastes the same. Because it hardly has any sugar in, it lasts ages too.
Comes in semi-skimmed and full fat.

Coconut milk - it doesnt curdle like soya milk does
 
Carton UHT 0.1% fat milk available in most supermarkets is 5g carb per 100ml but if poured into a jug and diluted with 200ml water you then get 5g carb per 300ml. UHT milk diluted with water tastes ok in tea and coffee.

That's a great tip, but, if you're going to dilute milk for tea and coffee, why not just put less milk in the cup.

Milk is one of the hardest things to give up for me. I'm used to glugging down a couple of pints a day, which is a lot of needless carbohydrate. Try to steer clear these days (apart from a splash in my tea).
 
Most milk has aroundr 5g carbs per 100ml so if you only have a splash in your tea I doubt you would even be able to measure any increase in bg levels what so ever with a home meter, of course it does depend on what you call a splash.

For instance if you had say 15ml you would be drinking .75g carbs or for 20ml the carbs what be just under 1g. I suppose it could add up if you are ultra low carbing say >30g per day and had twenty cups a day but otherwise I wouldnt even give it a second thought :D
 
I agree, Sid. I use semi-skimmed in my coffee. Atkins advises no milk on Induction phase, but I can't survive without my morning cup of coffee, so I've always had it, Induction or not.

I have 2 pints delivered every week, and usually throw some away. Unless you drink enough tea to use a pint a day :shock: , I wouldn't worry.

Though if I drink Earl Grey, I have it black. Very nice. Otherwise I hardly drink tea at all.

Lactofree by Arla tastes absolutely fine and as Wiflib says it has half the carbs of standard milk.
 
I take unsweetened soya milk with my numerous coffees....mainly because i am lactose intolerant but it is great as the unsweetened soya milk has hardly any carbs at all :)
 
I can't be bothered to take account of the little bit of milk in my tea. That's one of the things I ignore, in order to relax a bit and feel normal. I doubt it adds up to much. :wink:
 
^^^--I drink coffee with a good slug of cream, and lots of it.

Like strong coffee and tea with only a splash of milk so never bother carb counting the milk.
 
Thanks everyone. I do drink quite a bit, so have decided to try soya milk (because I can get hold of that) :mrgreen: I really do only have a splash, but all those splashes a day add up, and I really am holding a very tight less than 20g of carbs a day.
 
Bought some soya milk and it's lovely. I was so surprised, but I love it. High five to diabetes for making broaden my horizons :mrgreen:

Glad you posted that. I never thought about lactose free milk. I do like to drink milk sometimes, but it gives me the runs, so I'll try the lactose free one.

I really like soya milk too but unfortunately it affected my thyroid. Just something to be aware of if you consume soya. I have now switched to double cream which is delicious!

I've been lactose intolerant for about 10 years and am coeliac and type 1. Alpro have just started to do an almond milk in litre cartons (approx 3 carbs per 100ml) and hazelnut milk (approx 3 carbs per 100ml). Kara also do a litre carton of coconut milk (approx 1.9 carbs per 100ml) so I use this when I make my porridge or have it with gf granola for breakfast. The almond milk and coconut milk is lovely and makes a real creamy porridge. I haven't tried the hazelnut milk yet.

ok. having read all the previous posts i am wondering if i am ok doing what I am doing........... i have cereals twice a day... ready brek for breakfast and rice krispies for supper . both with semi skimmed milk. i also drink coffee made with skimmed milk. both types are UHT ones. since starting on ready brek and changing nothing else my bloods have gone way down most of the time. 4.8 being the lowest 5-6 being average and apart from a 3 week period back in may where it was really hot and my FBS was between 8.7-10.6 highest has been 7.8. i am type 2 borderline. and have lost weight gradually over the past few months. which im pleased about having put a stone or more on since stopping smoking 5 years ago.
i keep seein and reading about carbs. but all this milk doesnt appear to affect my BS. so am i ok to comntinue in this way. i cant afford soya or any of those specialist milks. have gone right off tea, tried herbal ones but not keen and drink s[parkling or soda water otherwise.
im very confused bout carbs.
i am on diet only and trying to keep off tablets if i can. have had enough side effects from other meds to last me a lifetime.
