Hi I’m new to the site and thought I would post my story. I have read lots of different threads and found it really informative.

I went for a blood test and ultra sound scan in February due to pain in my kidney area. Kidneys came back fine but turned out I have non alc fatty liver disease and my Hba1c was 43 and cholesterol was 5.5. I have been put on the diabetes prevention course. I find this a bit useless to be honest. I have found the information on here to be much more useful.
I have found the different diets a bit of a struggle. My nurse at the doctors surgery told me to do low fat diet but through reading these forums I have discovered that low fat contains more sugar. I have decided to go down the low carb keto tyoe diet. I have lost over a stone since doing this. I have also tried the Libre freestyle two week trial and decided to go with the dexcom one instead for three months. This has been very interesting, if I have eaten any bread or potatoes I have watched my blood sugars jump high very quickly, this includes whole meal which apparently slows the rise. I am starting to get the hang of what is good to eat and what isn’t.
Most mornings I have full fat Greek yougurt and berries which I mix up with keto granola, Linwood ground flaxseeds or chia seeds or just the yougurt and berries. Lunch will be homemade soup and no bread or salad. Dinner will be chicken or any sort of meat with veg and maybe something fatty with cheese or coleslaw.

So my question is because at times I get confused.
Is a LCHF ok for someone with a fatty liver?
Any recommendations for a good site that doesn’t cost money for recipes that suits a prediabetic, just slightly high cholesterol and a fatty liver? I am using nutracheck to record my foods. Unfortunately when I put in a weatherspoons meal it didn’t count the carbs they just took the data from the menu. I have lost over a stone since February so I am doing something right but I am confused with all the data out there

Hi @Chellmc7 , welcome to the forum.

I don't have experience myself with a fatty liver, but various members report a great improvement on LCHF.
You can use the search bar on the top right to do a search on fatty liver and you'll get many results on this forum. :)

Google is pretty good to come up with any recipe if you just add 'low carb' or 'keto' to your search!
And there's this thread in the low carb section of the forum where we can share what we've eaten, I find it a good place for inpiration: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/what-have-you-eaten-today-low-carb-forum.75781/page-2829

Thank you for the welcome and the link. I will enjoy reading what everyone has eaten and their experiences.

Hi @Chellmc7
I was just posting about fatty liver in another thread a little earlier today, where somebody was asking about it as though it was something separate from Type 2 Diabetes. In fact thy are very closely linked. In fact fatty liver often goes undetected or at least unresolved, until after Type 2 Diabetes come along.

Fatty Liver is thought my some medics to increase Insulin Resistance, but worse still it goes along with fatty heart, fatty pancreas and fatty kidneys - all type of visceral fat.
LCHF reduces body fat over al the body, but particularly visceral fat. So T2D's in the know don't fear fats, or even fats that come with traditional protein such as meat, fatty fish, eggs or cheese. Reducing carbohydrates quit a lot but adding in more of the traditional protein and fat to maintain normal calorie intake works really well (for most) lowering Blood Glucose and losing body fat including all that nasty visceral fat, as you have found from your weight loss.
Keep up the good work!

My NAFLD was supposed to kill me something like 6 years ago or so? Still here because of low carbing, it cleared my liver right up and it functions as it should now. No more pain either. Just kind of happened when I tackled the diabetes through diet. Happy accidents, eh. ;)

Can't help with the site, being Dutch, but sounds like you're on the right track as it stands anyway. You're off to a fab start!
Good going!
Jo

Thank you everyone your comments have made me feel better. I will carry on with what I am doing then. I am getting used to low carb now happy to know I can carry it on.

Years ago I had a fatty liver problem which made the numbskull of a Dr. (hospital not my GP) diagnose me as an alcoholic!! I'd been teetotal for 40-odd years (poverty not principle) and never ever had a problem with alcohol.

These days I have 1 small glass of red wine, single malt or cognac around 10 days in the month. I could easily do that more days, but this suits, and my liver is absolutely at top efficiency.

Edited to add - so LCHF or keto is fine for our livers going my my experience alone, but others may find differently. You seem to be doing a terrific job.

How was it established that you have NAFLD? Was it from a blood test (if so which one) or from the ultrasound scan?
If that value of 5.5 is your Total Cholesterol then I would advise that you completely ignore it because it's meaningless.

What, do you believe, is the root cause of your condition?

I had a scan at the same time as my blood tests because I was having pain. The scan lady told me there and then.
I think the cause of the NAFLD is because I had my gall bladder removed about 4 years ago. I do also like a drink but the scan lady thinks it is the gall bladder removal.
It’s interesting that it is common to have NAFLD when prediabetic or diabetic. I have learnt so much from these forums and find them much more helpful than the prevention course I am doing.

I am enjoying the low carb diet and finding it is getting easier and I am less hungry. I just have moments of panic where I think this is not going to help my cholesterol so I guess I was just looking for affirmation that it won’t harm me.

Hello
I have the same as you I didn't know they were related to each other, I am just looking into this low carb diet, its great to know that you have had excellent results with weight loss I need to lose loads so hope this will help, this was what I needed to read, so many thanks and keep up the good work.

@Chellmc7 Eating Low carb improved my total Lipid ratios, and usually improves both HDL, LDL and triglycerides. In my case it improved all except my LDL. But overall still an improvement.

Don't fear traditional fat like butter, eggs, cheese, fatty fish, fatty meat (like bacon). There was much less heart problems when our ancestors eat more of those and less of the seed oils that they try to tell us are 'vegetable oil'. - Yes, they come from vegetation, but they need a great big factory and lots of processing to male them palatable so they don't have to be used for oiling machinery which is what used to be done with them.

Your GP will probably add to your unease when your next blood test results come in. That's because your Total Cholesterol will very likely be much higher.
But like I said, it means absolutely nothing - despite what your GP will try to have you believe. Mine's 8.4 and I couldn't care less. Not because I'm some kind of reckless idiot but because I've educated myself and feel confident in my understanding.

I'm not due another test until January when I have completed my prevention course.
It has been very confusing on which diet yo do. I started in March doing low fat. I then found the forums and have been reading so much.
I have also bought a couple of low carb cook books to inspire me.
Without forums like these it can be a real minefield.
So thank you everyone

Mine did go up, but I'm in a minority. By far the usual case is that at the very least both HDL and Triglycerides improve.
I'm not concerned, even though I had a 3x cardio bypass 2 yrs before my diabetes diagnosis.
Even those not as confident as me about Ancel Keynes being wrong and Sat Fat, LDL not being the problem, should at least give it a try!
