Hey,
My names Bex and I am newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have been pre diabetic for 4 years but yesterday I was told I am now diabetic after getting a sky high blood sugar level on a recent blood test. I am now taking metformin tablets, before being diagnosed I felt very unwell on a daily basis all my symptoms are down to diabetes.
I'm the type of person who loves anything sweet and a big lover of chocolate and carbs I am struggling to manage my diet because of my sweet tooth problems and I wondered if anyone had any advice on what I should do? I am due to see a dietician next week but in the meantime any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

Hi Bex,

A sweet tooth is really an addiction... Meaning it's a habit that can be kicked. This coming from someone who'd put 5 spoonfulls of sugar in a tiny little espresso before her diagnosis, and now just goes entirely without. You'd have to go without sugars for a while for it to go away, and if you do, your palette would likely change, making things that weren't sweet before, taste like it anyway.

But if that's a bridge too far, for the time being, there's sugar free chocolate bars out there. I prefer 100% pure dark chocolate by Lindt, but most people'd have their tongue curl up in misery when they have that. So for you, I mean the bars that have a sweetener instead of sugar.... Mind you, those can have a laxative effect, so stevia'd or erythritol would be better than maltitol and such.

All in all, take it slow and give yourself some time to find foods that you feel you can live with. If you dive into a low carb way of eating and feeling you're being sorely deprived of any joy in life, it's not going to be sustainable. So find what works for you. Full fat greek yog with some berries in for instance, can feel like a decdent treat. And strawberries with clotted cream... Not in season, but potentially still on the menu. Your meter'll tell you what works for you and what doesn't.

Chocolate is not all that high in carbs - but it is the sugar added to the cocoa to make most of the bars for sale problematic.
As all starches and sugars are carbohydrates cutting out high starch foods, grains for instance, could be how to start the process.
What was your diagnostic HbA1c?
Can you test your blood glucose?
Checking after meals can be a help pinpointing problematic foods.

Hi. Try 85% Dark chocolate. It's much lower in Carbs and you do get used to it.. Have enough fat and protein in your diet as these keep you feeling full and reduce the desire for carbs. Be a little careful about the diet advice from the dietician as, sadly, many haven't a clue.
