Newly Diagnosed

Dear all,

I have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in early December 2020. I am 33 years old.

My A1C came at 11.9%. My A1C was 6% (Oct 2019).

Its been 4 weeks since I was diagnosed. I am on low carb diet and 250 Mg of Metformin once a day.

My latest Libre shows an estimated A1C of 5.4% (based on 24 days of data).

Any comments, suggestions, or feedback is much appreciated. This forum has helped me to stay positive.

Best wishes,
Sam

I think it is just a case of sticking to the low carb way of eating, and wait to see the result - it really worked for me - I don't even need medication (never did I suspect).

Thank you for your reply. Would you recommend me to cut the 250 Mg Metformin and just do the LCHF diet and exercise?

If you aren't deficient in B12, or if you supplement for the B12 loss and don't get any adverse gut reaction to the Metformin, then there's no reason to cut/stop it. However if that projected 5.4% HbA1C is close to reality then you don't need any help from medication.

Metformin discourages you liver from dumping glucose into your bloodstream - it can't help do anything about the blood glucose from what you eat.

Libre and self testing by other means and your hba1c measured by the doctor's do not always tally. I know finger tests are much less reliable as they are not continuous but having seen a few cases on here where the libre readings are not expected, I would be wary

Doing the low carb and exercise is good, it's what I do but I also have my bloods done at the doctor and base my discussions on changing meds with them engaged

If you are not being impacted by the Metformin then it does have othet potential benefits and might be worth staying on regardless, but that's your choice but personally I would keep engaged with the doctors

Hi. That is a young age to be T2 and that recent HBA1C is high. If you are slim or have lost weight unexpectedly recently then it's possible you are T1 and not T2. See how the BS goes. If you find it increasingly difficult to control then do ask the GP for the two tests for T1/LADA i.e. GAD and C-Peptide. Further meds could be added in the short term anyway. Do carry on with the Metformin. It is a very safe drug and has various protective effects. I was on 2000mg for many years and now on 1000mg.

I stopped taking Metformin and Atorvastatin as it was causing dreadful side effects - I was suicidal just before Christmas 2016. If you are OK taking the tablets then it really just needs a discussion with your GP or whoever prescribes them.

Thank you. I am 72 kilos and my height is 5.9. I did lose 6 kilos before I was diagnosed. My lifestyle was really bad in the past 9 months due to work from home. I was eating bad, zero physical exercise, and stress due to 12 hour day work. My doctor said I am Type 2.

Thank you. Metformin doesn't sit well in my stomach. It's been 4 weeks but still getting use to it. And its a 250Mg dose per day.

Side effects should subside in 2 weeks. If they haven't yet, and you take the stuff with a meal rather than on an empty stomach, they're not likely to... That was my reason to look for alternatives and I discovered low carbing. Didn't deed meds after that, not for blood sugar regulation. So it's worth a shot. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/ might help you along.

Good luck!
Jo

Thank you. I take it along my breakfast.

You could try asking for the slow release kind, it is kinder on the innards.

...Stick with the low carb, and maaaaybe "forget" to take metformin for a bit. Test a lot to see whether there's improvement in your blood sugars ()before a meal and 2 hours after the first bite, you're looking for a rise of no more than 2.0 mmol/l) and go from there.

Update: My A1C results 5.5% (it was 11.7% in early Dec 2020 when I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes). I was on 250 mg of metformin and LCHF diet.
