Off the rails

Hi @ally1 . I don't really know you but I saw your post and felt I had to leave this note.
Your worth it!
This hitting out and self harming with chocolates etc.. is not for you.
It sounds like you've convinced yourself your not worth having a healthy carb free or/and cigs free life.
Sit back and ask yourself...can you see yourself thinner, happier and a non-smoker?
Ally you deserve to be happy. Whatever that happiness is for you.
Your beating yourself up about being a smoker but your torturing yourself when your the only one suffering.
Please please be kind to yourself. Stop depriving yourself so the carvings cannot take a hold of you.
Falll in love with yourself again. Your definitely worth it.
Be kind to yourself. Once you love who you are you will treat yourself properly. You know your worth it.
From what I can see as an outsider you are well loved, respected and a lovely person. Start treating yourself as you do others. Please. :)
thank you for caring x

Ali you will find a way to get through it keep telling yourself that the best thing you can do for yourself is to stop smoking and if you have a slip or two with food while you are quitting think of it as just a blip and the next day back to the way you know you should be eating. It must be hard to be quitting smoking and trying to keep to a diet. Luckily I gave up smoking over 10 years ago before diabetes so never had to do both at the same time.
I knew cold turkey was the best way for me it had to be all or nothing. I had smoked for over 40 years when I decided to give it up I went cold turkey and never had another cigarette from that day.. I must say I was lucky and never suffered any withdrawal effects as some say they do I never even felt irritable I just used normal chewing gum and kept my hands busy when I felt the urge for a smoke, the thing I missed most about smoking was having the cigarette in my fingers.
Keep trying Ali and I know you will beat it in the end

Ally, forgive me for asking but is the overeating due to other external factors, other than a desire for food? If you are over eating, then why not look to low cal, low carb foods ( peppers, kale, broccoli, with plenty of spices/seasoning?) please remember that the fact that you have recognised an issue means that you are halfway there in fixing it.
I wish you well

image.jpg You can give up smoking and you will. I smoked 20 a day for over 30 years, so I can totally understand your struggle.

Both my husband and I smoked and we were in Dubai and bought silk cut /Marlboro cigarettes for £1 a packet in the (not duty free) shops. At the time they were £8 in the UK. So £7 a day, or £50 a week was what I was paying in tax to the government on top of the tax I paid in my pay packet.

Do you really want to pay that extra tax? To me it was like red rag to a bull. We came back from our holiday and both gave up. It wasn't easy, but I kept thinking of the tax I wasn't paying. The money we would have spent on cigarettes, we set up direct debits into a savings account. It soon added up, and we go on a luxurious holiday each year, flying first class. You deserve that too, and you can do it. Maybe it's not a holiday you want, maybe a new car, or some jewellery or a new sofa. Set yourself a goal. I bet you can do it!
Use the Stop smoking app; it is a great motivator. Although I no longer need it, I keep it on my phone. The figures speak for themselves, on this screen shot from last week. You can do it too. Good Luck xx

I saw somewhere that a poster advised me to eat sugar free jelly with fruit and cream. I'll be honest I still haven't made any but it sounded a good idea. My mum makes 2 batches of her 2 fav flavours and munches away - mostly on an evening. I guess having something ready to munch on always helps.
I'm trying to occupy my mind so I don't think of food. Hence often avoiding "what have you eaten today" post but I know its very very useful.
Do you have too much time on your hands?
I'm busy but was previously so busy I nearly cracked up. I've calmed down and past the comfort eating stage.
I'm ready to tackle my overeating but find my household full of temptation. Toddler still exploring foods so don't want to restrict him. Daddy and other son are adjusting after the december food treats. Weaning them off crisps and sugary treats. Mind u easter is on our doorstep. Eggs already in.
Maybe we could encourage each other?
Ally my mum went cold turkey from cigs but she lost some weight first so the extra polo mints and extra strong mints didn't make her even fatter.
Why not get a good diabetic lifestyle then tackle cigs?
One thing at a time?
I read somewhere it takes 8 weeks to form a new habit.
What do you think?

Ally

When you feel hunger drink a glass of water... Its ****.. I hate it... But I have to drink 2 litres a day of water to help my stomach. If I can do that then please just have a glass of water with you and instead of munching try sipping.

You've concquered other challenges.. You can do this...

Yesterday and today, I have been off the rails.eating everything and anything. Before lunch, bs was 15.9. Only myself to blame
Hello ally 1.
I'm Happyhippy (maddy) single and type 2 for 13 yrs.
I have read some of yours and friends posts I hope you don't mind.
My diabetes is not well controlled, my own fault.
I'm denial for many yrs.
sugars are 14-19 Most of the time means I feel s**t a lot.
I have chronic arthritis and ulcerated colitis. So not very mobile, probably why I treat myself lol.
I've tried Victoza but after six months I didn't loose weight or lower sugars. So Drs said to stop as its expensive.
So I'm taking 10 ml Insulin with Gliclazide, Pioglitazone.
Got to Change my diet. I'd like to try the low carb that may help.
Best wishes to you Maddy

This may seem harsh, but the reality is both my parents died having terrible complications brought on by their lifestyles, they both required an extensive care package, both suffered amputations and many operations my mother was on dialysis was partially sighted and suffered bronchitis alongside her diabetes losing fingers and toes, my father suffered angina and had several heart attacks including strokes and was a double amputee above the knee, both drank, ate and smoked their lives away.
Addiction is something that only the person in question can do it, sadly my parents lived the way they wanted, despite the advice they were always dismissive saying life is for living, having spent time caring and pandering to them, their carefree lives came at a price, they died and suffered, and were a burden to many people around them.

I hope the o/p can get back on track, I wish her well as the alternative possibly could well be all or any of the above.
Stallen. So sorry to read your post about your parents.
I do understand.
You must of suffered as well, I know what life is like carding for a parent.
I'm sure people will get a lot from this information and try and take care of their diabetics.
I type 2 and not very well controlled.
Best wishes Happyhippy (Maddy)

Hi Ally, I feel and understand your pain. I gave up 9 years ago (pre diabetes) using lozenges, but I put 3 stones on in 3 months, and 5 stones in total. I wasn't so much the hunger and putting my hand to my mouth. Have you considered swapping to an e cigarette as part of your quitting process?

Hi @ally1

Congratulations on reducing your smoking from 40 to under ten cigs a day.
I have been watching this thread and have noticed how much you are respected on here and can see how well you have done with your BG and Weight. I am seeing how hard you have been going at it and how much you have reduced your smoking. I am also seeing how much pressure this is putting on your eating and BG

To put my remarks into context I am a smoker (about 20 a day for 40 years)

I am not going to presume to advise you what to do but will let you know what I would do in your current situation

I would be very concerned about my BG levels and eating and stress and would do the following
  • Cap my smoking at 10 per day and congratulate myself for having reduced my habit by 75% and putting myself in a position to kick the habit completely @ my next attempt
  • Get my focus back on my BG and Diet reset some goals there (because I have been successful before and know how to do this) and when I have achieved them decide when I will commence my next stage of quitting

thank you. I am trying to get my bs levels down, and to try and lose the 8lb that I have put on. I want to give up smoking because I want too and can not afford the 16 pounds aday that I was spending on cigs. It's like starting again with dieting and the feeling of hunger between meals and drinking more to counteract the hunger
