One for the carbs debate!

Having read some of the spats on here regarding the low/high carb debate, it's with slight trepidation that I introduce myself and provide a brief outline of my progress since diagnosed as a T2.

Anyway, It was almost two years ago now since I was diagnosed, and although the figures didn't mean that much to me at the time I think my HbA1c was over 10 and my fasting BG 16+.

I was a couple of stone overweight, didn't take much exercise and my diet was awful - junk, high-fat food and mainly eaten binge-style.

Over the next year or so I gradually lost a couple of stone in weight, transformed my diet and now walk several miles a day with some steep flat out stretches, often with a stone or so of bags of shopping, thus it can be quite vigorous. I'm now around my ideal height/weight - BMI 21 or so.

I was put on 2 x 500 mg Metformin per day initially, and got my HbA1c down to around 8 after a couple of months. The dosage was raised to four tablets per day, and eventually the reading came down to 6 or so, then 5.2.

My dosage was reduced back to the two Metformin per day, and a few months later my reading had increased to 5.4.

I was tested again recently and my latest figure was 4.8, which I find a bit difficult to credit - the figure I was given over the phone was 29 in the new units, which I converted to the old ones, so perhaps I picked up the figure wrongly, but even if it was 39 then that would still be comfortably under 6.

Anyway, here's the diet bit. I'm eating lots of fruit and veg, including bananas, apples and clementines (or similar) which I know some people have difficulty dealing with.

I also consume a fair bit of carbohydrate, including a big bowl of breakfast cereal (unsweetened, obviously), four/five slices of bread (it's the Tesco Finest oat-based stuff, since oats are supposed to be more palatable for diabetics) and some pasta, though I avoid potatoes and rice.

Other than that it's generally low-fat stuff including oily fish for the Omega 3 and usually a Tesco lite choices ready meal (I know, I know, but I can't really cook!) accompanied by lots of microwaved veg. I consume over a pint of milk a day, and it's the Tesco 0.75% fat stuff, which is mid-way between semi-skimmed and skimmed, but still tastes fine with my cereal!

No prizes for guessing where I do most of my shopping!

Hi Sirius.
Welcome to the forum. Have a good look around and if you have any questions or any contribution to make then just fire away.

As for the carbs debate, that's always an issue for some, most of us just get on with it as we see fit.

Hi Sirius,

Congratulations on the improvement that you have made - I'm impressed. Keep it up!

Just like you, I'm a Type 2 on metformin and and have made a big improvemement myself by cutting back dramatically on the starchy carbohydrates - in particular, cereals, bread and potatoes. Apart from that we have a lot of similarities - I can still eat quite a lot of carbohydrate especially if I take it as fruit - apples, oranges, pears, grapes, kiwi, plums etc - which does hardly anything whatsoever to my blood glucose levels. I eat low-fat options also whenever I can.

Best wishes - John

John, I've only ever had my BG tested while fasting so TBH I don't have a clue if I'm getting spikes after eating the fruit, bread, cereals etc, but since my HbA1c is around 5 then I assume they can't be that high!

I keep on meaning to get hold of a meter and do a bit of testing just to see exactly what's going on, but I've just never gotten round to it. But given that I'm well controlled I think it would be a case of shelling out for the meter and strips myself, and to be honest I wouldn't even bother asking the medical practice I attend - I haven't seen any specialists.

But your advice does provide a bit of extra reasurrance.

Hi sirius
welcome
glad it works for you
It wouldn't for me. I have to be ery strict. However today, i walked 4 miles.half of it uphill, pushing grandchild( who slept a lot of it) in buggy. Which is also a good workout.

Wow Sirius - you've done remarkably well to do what you have achieved so far without any testing. That makes your situation even more of an achievement!

It's very likely that cereals and bread will be spiking you because that sort of food does that to almost everyone. If you ever decide to improve your situation further then I suggest that is what you cut back on. I've just about stopped eating those two food types altogether.

I don't disagree with your attitude on testing while things are going so well. However, testing is useful and, personally, I couldn't ever do without it these days - but I am a bit on the obsessive side.

You seem to have things sorted out fairly well. However, don't go to sleep on the case because it's likely if you do that the diabetes will creep up on you and give you a big boot up the backside.

Best wishes - John

John, thank for that - I've been quite disciplined at sticking to my diet, exercise and meds, otherwise I suppose I've just been lucky.

Interesting that you use the word 'obsessive', since that's perhaps one reason I haven't done any testing - it's a thing I could see myself getting obsessive about if I started.

But I hope to get hold of a meter and some strips soon and give it a go, and hopefully it won't reveal anything too alarming and I can be cool about it 8)
