Parkrun

Thanks for that - looks like I have some reading to do!
I heard somewhere that if your body does go into 'starvation' mode, you can end up burning muscle (protein) when you exercise - do you have any thoughts/experience of that?

Ketosis is protein sparing, it's a starvation protection mechanism. What ultimately kills you in starvation is muscle wastage (of your heart) and not hypoglycemia, ketosis is a defense mechanism against both.

For aerobic exercise your muscles preferentially metabolize fat anyway, it's difficult to understand why they would break down protein for fuel.

Judging by my unfeasibly large calf muscles and my big pounding heart, I can't see any evidence of that in my own running.

Cool - Have just ordered the Volek and Phinney book you recommended so that I can get a better understanding.

Ya know I just love to stir you for your anti-Primal chronic cardio ways, BF :D

Please don't make me get my dusty copy of "Born to Run" off the bookshelf. Persistence hunting is the reason why we are bipeds - walking is a fortunate side effect of being able to run. It takes about 20 miles of running to exhaust a wild antelope, that's why our maximum range is about 20 miles.

Why else would Humans be the fastest land animal over large distances? We evolved to be endurance athletes.

Anyone up for doing the parkrun with Team Blood Glucose on the 12th April in Swindon?

Took me nearly three years since my first parkrun, mostly due to running other races on weekends a lot of the time, but just did my 50th parkrun last weekend. Nice shiny red 50 t-shirt should be making its way to my home parkrun soon. :D

Think I'll make a 'pilgrimage' to the first parkrun at Bushy Park next weekend as a final slow jog before doing London Marathon on the Sunday.

I'm working tomorrow, so can't do a parkrun, but last weekend, did my 25th parkrun, then my first ever fell race on Sunday. Very pleased to finihs with no major problems, although pretty thirsty by end as it was a hot day, race start at 1300.

Congratulations on earning your 50th T shirt, spideog :-)

33rd parkrun for me tomorrow, just being tail runner for the day though. First marathon in 30 years on Sunday.
