HELP Fasting blood glucose of 75 mg/dL (home kit) this morning and 77 mg/dL yesterday morning (home kit). Last January it was 103 mg/dL (lab), but last month (September) it was only at 93 mg/dL. I am really worried because I ate a low-carb meal and I think my blood sugar acts so slow during meals.

Hello everyone I am very worried right now. I am heading to the doctor two weeks from now for an appointment. So here's why...

A while ago I ate my lunch at 12:00 PM cause I am doing intermittent fasting. My initial blood glucose was 69 mg/dL. I cooked my lunch and ate pita bread (made with almond flour and cauliflower), onions (raw), cabbages (raw), cucumber, ground chicken (cooked in coconut oil and margarine), chicken liver (cooked in coconut oil and margarine), with mayonnaise, mustard, and a lot of cheese.

So here's the thing you can see in the pictures.

Before I ate, it was 69 mg/dL.

30 minutes after I ate, I tested again, it was 104 mg/dL.

1 hour after it was 127 mg/dL.

2 hours after it was 114 mg/dL.

Isn't it moving down very slowly? I am so worried right now, I feel so anxious ( I am a hypochondriac).

I am so worried and two weeks is very far from now. Is it possible I have pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, or diabetes based on my meals? TYIA.

Those look like completely normal numbers to me.
Do you have any reason to expect you might have diabetes? Why are you testing your blood glucose?

Because last January 2023, my fasting blood glucose was 103 mg/dL. A few months ago, some of my toes (only on the left) are painful when rubbed or scratched (not numb) when I eat carbs. My left calf seems sore when I eat carbs. Only my left is like that not on my right. The tip of some of my fingers and sides of my fingers seems swollen sometimes when I eat carbs. I feel like it’s neuropathy. I don’t want that, that is why I am so anxious right now. But now, I don’t feel it anymore because I don’t eat carbs. I tested my blood glucose again today and it’s only at 71 mg/dL. I am going to talk about this to my doctor.

Your numbers are perfectly fine, and there's nothing in them to indicate anything wrong with your metabolic response. In the UK we use different measurements and the pic I'm attaching shows the equivalents. So your 69 and 114 translate to 3.8 and 6.3. 3.8 might be a bit on the low side for me, but otherwise these are OK.

Everyone's blood sugar rises in the first hour or so after they eat carbs. The carb is being digested to glucose and entering the blood stream, and then the insulin gets to work and clears it. That seems to be what is happening with your figures. I can get a reading of 9mmol/l (163mg/dl) 20 minutes after having a milky coffee. After 40 minutes it's back to 5.3.

So on the figures ( all of them) that you report, I don't think there's anything to see.

I have neuropathy, which is probably now permanent, and my experience was and is not at all like what you're describing. My neuropathy occurred after about six years of significantly elevated blood glucose levels as measured by HbA1c. It reduced greatly when my HbA1c returned to normal levels. It did not and does not come on when I eat carbs. We can't and won't attempt to diagnose on this forum, so my advice would be to see your doctor about the symptoms you're describing.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum.

Your numbers are OK.

How long are your intermittent fasts for?

Hi people, the pros and cons of margerine are an interesting topic which can be discussed in a new thread should someone wish to start one. They have been deleted from this thread because they were derailing it. Please remember that sheeshing is a young new member who is anxious about their health, and keep your posts on their topic of slowly dropping blood sugar.

Hi I have been fasting for 16 hours. Sometimes, my fasting blood glucose in the morning is 69-75 mg/dL. But this morning, it was 85 mg/dL because I ate barbeque and japanese dumplings last night, I guess?

Thank you. I really don’t know why my left feet is like this. When I stopped eating carbs, the uncomfortability and stinging pain in some of my toes and pad really went away. I am so afraid of getting neuropathy, or worse, diabetes.

Oh to add, sometimes I get dizzy after eating carbs or sugar and I don’t know why. That is why I am asking anyone here if they have the same experience because my appointment is two weeks away from now. I am really scared.

Just throwing it out there.... Are you hyperventilating? I know when I'm stressed, my hyperventilation turns chronic, which means tingling limbs, and stabby chest pains (like cramps right on the sternum). If you're truly a hypochondriac, the mere stress of this might be kicking your breathing into overdrive. Might be way off with this, but the things that haunt us can turn physical, if we're stressed for too long.

All in all your numbers look good.... Maybe ask for a HbA1c to make sure, but... Don't rule stress out. It can really mess a person up. Keep in mind that neuropathy is nerve damage. It takes forever to heal, so when it's present, it's not going anywhere, and it won't come and go depending on your meals. It's a long haul thing. So you can let that one go, hopefully.

Hugs,
Jo

Those are all (very) low numbers. If you check the chart I posted earlier, you'll see that they are all "off the map" on the low side. Given the allowable inaccuracy of the test (eg a true value of 100 could be shown as being anywhere in a range between 95 and 105) they're all in much the same very low range.

Don't forget that regardless of what you've eaten your liver will be adjusting your blood glucose levels all the time. I personally (and I am diabetic) would not expect to see any carry-over from food eaten more than 16 hours ago. As you are not diabetic, your insulin would have cleared any rise in blood glucose from that meal within two hours, maybe quicker.

I don't doubt that you have pains etc. But neuropathy takes years to develop after a long period of elevated blood glucose -which you definitely do not have. It certainly isn't a reaction to eating carbs. Your account doesn't correspond with either my own experience or anything I've read on diabetic-related neuropathy.

I think you can relax about diabetes. You have excellent blood glucose numbers. You should see the doctor about what's troubling you, but I don't think you have any grounds for jumping to the conclusion that it's diabetes related. There's simply no evidence for that.

Hi,

The BG numbers are not a problem.

Have you sought or undergone any counselling for your anxiety or any other issues?

Thank you so much for the input. I am just so anxious about this blood sugar thing because my grandmother has it. I am so stressed out because of the symptoms I mentioned. Thank you.

Actually, I have no time for it at the moment because I am working and studying at the same time. Hehe

Sometimes, when I go to the doctor's clinic I can't breathe well lol. It makes my blood pressure higher because of nervousness. I will test my HBA1C in the next two weeks and hope it's normal. I can't bear to have diabetes. :(

Follow-up:

I did an HBA1C test four days ago: it was 5.3%

I still don't know why my left leg and knee get sore whenever I try to eat something sweet or carbs, and my left foot feels weird. :arghh:

Great result, and should put your mind at rest about diabetes/raised blood glucose.

Of course, you still have to find out what the cause is of your discomfort. Good luck.
