GP has asked me to go and have this. Never been offered to me before. Is it new? Anyone else had it?

I have had the vaccination. I had no side effects.
I jumped at the chance because I had pneumonia in 2008, and never ever want to repeat that experience!

With having type 1 I'm surprised you've not been offered the pneumo injection before @Diakat

It's given as a one-off to people of a certain age or those who are at a heightened risk of pneumonia, so people with diabetes are offered it as well as asthmatics for example.

I got mine about 7-8 years ago, didn't hurt and it just leaves a small lump which disappears after a day or two. Definitely worth getting IMHO.

It was no bother. Got it at the same time as my flu jab. It's not an annual thing it lasts for years.

Thanks, I've always been invited for the flu before so wonder if this is new to my surgery this year? Or if they just suddenly realised I should have it?

Hi @Diakat same as you I've had flu jab every year but never been offered this.

At a guess I'd say they've missed you off somehow, the jab has been around for quite some time now so wouldn't think that your Dr's surgery is just offering them now.

Usually they do check when giving out the flu jab, never mind better getting it done @Diakat just to be safe.

I think you'll find it depends on age. There was a band of age groups at one time who were both too old and too young if I recall correctly. Don't get septiceamia I had it twenty years ago and the vaccine stops the pneumonia version.

I had it quite soon after I was dxd - Hubby has never been offered it though, we were going to ask about it when we do flu jabs

I had a flu jab in 2008 and then a letter saying that I could have the pneumococcal vaccination a few weeks after having the flu jab and would I like to do so. I am old, it was free so I went for it. No problem, no bad effects bar one.

The nurse said, "Would you mind if I took a blood sample for a test?" I did not object since I didn't know why she wanted it.. Next I got a letter asking me to fast for another blood test and guess what happened next. You're right, "Hello DN how nice to meet you, does this mean I'm diabetic?".

Thanks everyone, I called surgery back and am booked in to get it in early September.

I could be wrong....but isnt the pneumococcal every 10 years or so?? I had one when i was diagnosed 10 years ago and one towards the end of last year too!

I had one when diagnosed some 20 odd years ago - was told i wouldnt need it again and have never been invited back.

I was told by two different GP's that I only needed the two vaccinations.
