Thank you for taking time to replyDon't panic, there is lots you can do. Remember, this is the worst time of your diabetes journey. I think most likely all of us here went through a horrible time of partial ignorance, horror and dismay in the beginning. I am now sort of stabilised, but I have never forgotten how how wretched and afraid I was at first.
First, re-evaluate your diet. Are there carbs in there of which you are not yet aware? Have a look at Dr Bernstein's list of "no no" foods https://www.diabetes-book.com/no-no-foods/ and then move on to his list of "What's left to eat". https://www.diabetes-book.com/whats-left-to-eat/
You say you are eating "loads of protein and veg and berries." According to Dr B protein raises the bg about half as much as carbs, but still counts. Vegetables do contain carbs, especially root veg and any kind of bulb eg onions. Leafy greens are the lowest carb veg. Berries are the lowest in carbs of the fruits, but still they have way more carbs than most veg. They need to be eaten very moderately if at all. The more or less carb free foods are fish, flesh, fowl and fat. Of those, the one that is reliably totally carb free is fat. As you reduce your carbs, assuming you are not aiming to lose weight, you do need to replace the missing carbs with fat, as well as some extra protein.
Were you eating a "healthy" low fat diet before? I certainly was. You now need to turn that on its head. Plenty of fat, even saturated fat.
Are you testing your blood? Testing urine is considered less reliable.
Are you eating late at night? If so, that may raise your morning fasting bg.
Stress can raise bg.
You might find inspiration in the numerous videos by Dennis Pollock, titled "Beat Diabetes" on Youtube.
Enough for now. You are being tremendously pro-active, great! You'll get there! Good luck!
When you get a bg that is unexpectedly low 2 hours after a meal, it is always worth re-testing. I have had a big drop 2 hours after a meal and then a big rise up to 4 hours later. This can be due to several factors - lots of fat and / or protein in the meal, a very big meal, or delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis) in the person.Mine was 7.1 and 2 hrs after a fry up was 6.8
In a way that is good news! Losing weight seems to be much easier on a low carb diet, and lowering bg seems to happen easily as people lose weight.I do need to lose a very significant amount of weight
I had sausages bacon eggs mushrooms and beans a half a slice of wholemeal seeded bread. I also drank apple cider vinegar with water after. I've not eaten since 6 hrs ago.Is it worth re testing now or not? When you get a bg that is unexpectedly low 2 hours after a meal, it is always worth re-testing. It might be interesting to see where your bg is now, and then test as I suggested hourly the next time you get a suspect low reading at 2 hours.I had sausages bacon eggs mushrooms and beans a half a slice of wholemeal seeded bread. So just tested and now am 5.9.It might be interesting to see where your bg is now, and then test as I suggested hourly the next time you get a suspect low reading at 2 hours.
Everyone is different. For me, your meal was quite high carb. Do you have a diet plan? Do you watch how many carbs you eat in a day / at a meal? For me, beans and bread are off the menu, and I am careful to check the amount of carbs in my sausages and bacon. (Yes, bacon can contain carbs.)
You can believe the nurse, or you can look at the label.I was told by the diabetic nurse during a pregnancy that sausage and bacon had no carbs
What do you think of the last result of 5.9?You can believe the nurse, or you can look at the label.
Certainly better than 7.1! If I hadn't eaten for hours, I would hope to see a bg of under 5.5 You will have to decide on your own targets. Are you testing your fasting bg every morning? What do you think of the last result of 5.9?
Yes my fasting morning reading was 7.1. Usually in the 7s.Certainly better than 7.1! If I hadn't eaten for hours, I would hope to see a bg of under 5.5 You will have to decide on your own targets. Are you testing your fasting bg every morning?
You need to be careful with sausages if you are trying to limit carb. Almost all have added filler, usually around 30% by weight, which is usually oatmeal or similar, so carbohydrate. I buy the Polish and German sausage in Lidl, which is usually around 98/99% meat, or the Heck sausages which I think are around 95% meat. Bacon is usually not a problem. So just tested and now am 5.9.
I was told by the diabetic nurse during a pregnancy that sausage and bacon had no carbs my partner put 4 halves of toast on my plate. I ate 1 half. Seeing as it's Easter. Today is a day where I will eat a little treat. I've been watching what I eat for a week now and have lost 5lb.
I don't count carbs, I've seen so much conflicting information but I am not eating white carbs or having added sugar. No crisps no cakes no biscuits. The amount I've changed in 1 week is a lot. Until I get some support from a health care professional, I'm winging it!
Well I am pleased to say this was my lowest reading upon waking in 8 days since I completely changed my diet. This morning I am at 5.6mmol/L.
Neeny, I am very new here also but my understanding is that the continuous glucose monitors are not as accurate as the finger prick tests and if you go out of range on a CGM for example, next step should be a finger prick test to confirm.
Otherwise I guess we'd no longer need to do the finger prick tests at all!
