Hello,

not sure if I am diabetic yet I went to hospital Wednesday they did a hba1c I rang my doctors they not got the results yet so I rang the diabetic team at the hospital and they said the level was 69 so I said am I diabetic then and she said she was not allowed to say either way, the problem is I can’t stop drinking or having a wee all the time and I keep getting headaches all the time but can someone help me here iam scared if I am though because that means I can’t eat no more sugar. I love sugar

******update*********

So I went to doctors today and you all was correct I have diabetes type 2 and they have told me to go on a diet and take metformine.

They told me go to go for an eye test which I have booked for 2 weeks time.

They would not give me a prickly thing because I am type 2

They told me I got to exercise a whole 2 hours a week and stop eating saturated fats, so I said if it’s nice I can’t eat it he said basically yes.

So no fast foods :(

I had to book in to see a diabetic nurse to discus diabetes management but they fully booked got to ring back mid next week for an appointment.

Also they have to take more blood from me (I not have none left soon) to retest my hb1ac even though gp and the diabetes nurse say I have it.

Thanks for all the support

**********new update************

For 2 months been having problems with diarrhoea, I mean I am trained but I still did it in my pants.
Anyway the nurse at the GP was fantastic she sent me for loads of blood tests which all came back fine apart from the ferritin levels and A1c which is 92.
The nurse also sent me for CT scan which waiting for results for.
The tablets the nurse put me on mertformin and glicazide made me poo really bad too.
So the nurse sent me to the diabetes specialist nurse, I am now under these and they are fantastic.
Put me on insulin right away, sending me for tests to see what type of diabetes I have.
They also installed a libre 2 on me which I have been putting what I been eating on.
Still an along way to go but fingers crossed will be sorted soon.

BTW I completely cut out my sugar drinks, diet probably isn’t great though but working on that slowly.

Thank you all for the great advice given here and how nice everyone is.

Also had to let DVLA know I am on insulin, they have put me on a 3 year medical review licence.

Also when I am with the DSN they have put me forward for GGT cholesterol and triglycerides blood test as well.

Well that HbA1c is certainly in the diabetic range - the threshold for diagnosis in the UK is 48. It will be important for you to learn what type of diabetes you have as the treatment options vary considerably.

In the meantime you could reduce your carbohydrate intake (including sugar) as that may help with the thirst/needing to pee a little.

And welcome to the forum!

I’m not diagnosing you - none of us here can, but was saying that the HbA1c number you reported is in the diabetic range. I’d suggest that you follow up again with your GP or the hospital. If the hospital have the result the GP should be able to see it electronically.

My advice would be to try and relax until you have your appointment and get a firm diagnosis.

Things are unlikely to be as bad as you fear - for me personally, diagnosis was a blessing in disguise as I’m now so much healthier.

As for not being able to ‘eat anything nice’, that all depends on your definition of nice!

Possibly. Something you’d get used to though, and with the right technique you’ll barely feel it.

Your statement made me smile. You must have been a very healthy person until now if pricking your finger is that bad. Once you get your diagnosis, be it type 2 or type 1, all you need to do is to decide if you are going to follow the advice that the nurses and doctors give. There are worse things in life than giving up eating cakes or sweets. You can stay healthy with diabetes, providing that you behave sensibly and avoid too many carbohydrates. Take a couple of deep breaths to calm yourself, and then follow advice.
Good luck.

For a diabetic the problems are carbohydrates, which are starches and sugars - they are treated the same by our bodies, so you could give up bread and potatoes and continue to eat cream cakes - assuming you are an ordinary type 2 like me.
The Hba1c you report is not super high - I started off at 91 thanks to the high carb diet I was being encouraged to eat, so with any luck you can sort it out and get back to normal quite soon.
Even better is that the thirst and constant toilet trips are indicative of high blood glucose, so with a lower intake of carbohydrate the symptoms fade quite quickly for many people.

I was very healthy before, never even broken a bone ever! Then I go into the hospital the other day and I come out with my own polyp and diabetes, I always thought you can’t eat with diabetes but am learning you can thanks for the advice.

Do you have to prick yourself?

And can you diet well?

Hello mr,

I am really learning so much but I still don’t know what carbs are or anything I learnt today you can have proteins as well it’s all confusing.
I am so used to just eating what I like when I like I feel this is going to be very difficult for me.
I need to stop going to the toilet it’s annoying at best I used to be able to go ages without going and now I go all the time.

I fear I will be having to have maggots attached to me because you get ulcers on your legs!

You had 91 wow you are worse than me assuming the higher it is the worse it is?

So do you have to prick yourself?

And how do you manage your diet if you don’t mind me asking?

The lancets they use in hospital can be quite painful, but there are much kinder lancets that many of us use, and the finger pricking device can be set to different levels, so usually I don't find it at all painful at home.

Yes, I do prick my fingers to get blood glucose readings. I used to have to do that before every meal, but now that I use glucose monitors I do it less frequently. The finger-pricks hurt every time, but only for a few seconds, so I can bear it. It is not as bad as having a needle put in my arm for blood tests. I have always been accident prone, starting with one of my fingers being crushed at age four, so I have often had worse, longer lasting, pain.

Having to be careful what I eat is a nuisance, and counting carbohydrates all the time (I am type 1). However, I have learned to be moderate with everything. It is not easy to do, but there is no choice if I want to avoid complications.

You mentioned that you were worried about leg ulcers and toes being amputated, but you can avoid those by keeping you blood glucose readings in a healthy range. This will not mean much to you at the moment, but the diabetes nurses will teach you after you get your diagnosis. None of this is going to be easy, but you can do it.

I was told, at diagnosis that I was a really bad diabetic.
I got a meter and strips etc and used the tests to find out what to eat and how much so my blood glucose was normal. Once I sorted out what I could eat I only did a few more checks to see how a new food affected me or what progress I was making.
I eat twice a day and have 40 gm of carbs maximum. These hot days I drink mostly water, but have coffee with cream when it is colder, or fruit teas. I have Covid again and now the teas, cold, taste funny. Sigh.
My Hba1c was normal in 6 months eating low carb, but Covid disrupted things, though only for a short while.

Thanks for getting back to me :)

So you can get rid of diabetes if you eat correctly? And I might not lose my toes or have to have maggots?

I have lots to learn about this.

Apparently I was pre diabetic 2 years ago but no one told me until I was in hospital the other day!

Am sorry to hear you have covid I hope you get better soon also I am really happy your hba1c is better does that mean you not diabetic now? I have not had this yet :) usually I don’t get things happen to me with my health now I getting these things happen and it’s scary!

I don’t drink tea or coffee just full fat coke all the time so I don’t know how am going to drink.

I have loads of meals a day usually more than 5.

Hi and welcome. Yes, keep the carbs down but you can have some so they aren't banned. Try to stay below something like 150gm/day for starters. That's Total carbs as listed on the back of food packets. Get hold of a glucose meter so you can check your BS from time to time. When using the lancet on a finger, use the side of the finger and not the central pad as many nurses wrongly do. If you keep your blood sugar reasonably under control you shouldn't suffer any major health problems if any during life. Diabetes is serious but the good news is that it can be well controlled fairly easily.

Of course you feel all over the place now, but this is all totally do-able, and MUCH easier to actually do than to worry about. It's a bump on the road of life, but there are lots of those. We here offer loads of support and information from actual experience. Best of all is the chance to take control!

Now - there are lots of diabetic-friendly foods, so don't mourn what you can't eat - embrace all the luscious things you CAN eat. And drink. Learn what carbohydrates are, and which foods contain them, which contain sugars (or both). This is a fabulous opportunity to work with your body not against or in spite of it. Overall you will become much healthier, have more energy, great skin. All the information is here, so carve out time in your day to sit and read what we can tell you. It's a lot, so take it in easy stages. I have been on the forum for nearly a year, and I learn something new every day.
