Should Lucozade be exempted from the sugar tax?

I'd make diabetics exempt from this sugar tax.
Give each diabetic some form of ID card that is scanned in shops that takes the sugar tax away from certain drinks such as lucozade when bought by us.
Sugar tax shouldn't be used to punish us when it's occasionally nessesaray but should be used for the reason it has been brought in

Well that escalated quickly! People getting their hair off over a few pence price increase. Gee whizz!

Indeed. &'I happen to know there are two insulin dependants in your household. Respect for not "shrimping".

@mahola if any of my mates asked me to by them lucozade to save themselves 27pence or whatever then I'd rip them a new --------- in front of all the lads in the pub next time we were all out
It's not like we drink lucozade socially so I wouldn't feel up nor down about not paying the sugar tax as I'd still be buying it anyway at the already quite pricey price

I'm going to say it should be exempt. Besides Lucozade energy is recommended to treat hype by the specialists

I do a 2 hour karate class twice a week. I use the Lucozade sport to keep my blood sugar right depending on the intensity of the class. If I get worse I use the Lucozade energy as it has more sugar. For me personally I find the dextrose tablets take to long to consume in a class and they stick to the roof of my mouth.

By law you have to keep a treatment for a hypo in the car and not in the boot. Lucozade can be left in the glove box with out melting or going off.

But the main reason is families with multiple diabetics in the family. How many mums have given up work so they can check the kids bloods during the night? With the economic state of the country with bills and rent increasing but wages not. If people are counting every penny and the price rise means you don't buy that additional bottle then they can't treat the hypo at home.

Jamie Oliver was all about education with his school meals and food revolution. So why did he not campaign for education on the drinks instead of a sugar tax?

One thing puzzles me about this thread..

There is a "poll" missing at the top..?

I also feel this topic of Lucozade should be made sticky..? :p

@GordonMcLean

Then people will just be getting their diabetic mates to buy them their sugar fix.

We already get free prescriptions. I'd feel greedy asking to be exempt from anything else!
If you feel that strongly about being 'greedy' then just don't apply for the exemption card (if one should exist at the time). Quite simple really.

I'm actually starting see your way of thinking.. Why not go the "whole hog"?!
All those allocated parking spaces for dementia carers & cancer patients in hospitals (not to mention the disabled.) should be handed over to the insulin dependant too...
Let's go one further.. Close down a baby unit & put in a petrol station, so we can gas up for "gratis" when we get there. (Pick up a few bottles while we're at it?)

To quote Braveheart; They can take away our pancreas. But they can't remove our ethical sensibilities...
Everybody has a right to an opinion. If you don't like my opinion then don't waste my time replying with sarcastic, narcissistic remarks. The forum is here to express ones opinion and I would appreciate you stop trying to bully and intimidate

Don't you fear, I will definitely not be applying. Life hasn't got that bad yet that I can't afford a few extra pence on top of the normal cost of a bottle of Lucozade.

We have a shop called "Jack Fultons" here. 2 for £1 in there. Bargain!!!
Well, unfortunately there are thousands of families not as well off as you are, my friend. These families struggle, day in day out to put food on their table for their families, so enough with the it's only an extra fee pence, show some compassion. We are not all able to afford the basics. Think yourself lucky and its disgusting that you perceive to take the micky out of people in this unfortunate position. Where are your morals. Absolutely shocking statement.

There are far too many personal remarks on here, so lets get back to the thread in question and leave the jollies to the joke section, after all, it is about Lucozade, and the thread may get locked if this type of thing carries on.
It's been an intersting thread, lets keep it that way
Right, I have had my little moan....................on wards :)

I replied to a thread about statins made me think about this a bit more and I'm still in the no camp. - the way I see it is this

I chose to stop taking statins free on prescription because of personal choice and chose to spend my own money on supplements to help me lower my cholesterol

Glucose gel is available free on prescription also I believe are glucose tabs - whether both of these are nasty or not is a personal choice - those who prefer to drink lucozade and pay for it are making a choice - which they are free to make just like me - but I wouldn't expect any concession to help me fund my choice and wouldn't expect sugary drinks to have that concession either.

Someone posted a link to a blog on here - sorry can't find who it was - the writer of the blog had worked out if you treated 100 hypos a year that's 2 a week with lucozade IF the tax is passed onto the consumer it would cost an extra £2.48 a year!:greedy:

And yet here you are, using the internet. Did you get that for free then?

I am not taking the micky (SP) out of anyone. I think myself very fortunate. And my morals don't even come into the equation. Don't question who I am or my integrity via a few comments made on this forum. The forum is here to express one's opinion and I would appreciate you stop trying to bully and intimidate with your comments.

You seem to think I am one of those unfortunate people. Fortunately I am not in that position, I am simply speaking up for the less fortunate, so there you go again casting assumptions.

Edited to remove personal attacks.

you only take he gel when you are having a assisted severe hypo, not when you are having a mild hypo which you can treat yourself.

As has been requested a number of times, please keep this thread on track. The topic is whether or not a tax should be applied on Lucozade.

I know this - if it's a mild hypo why not treat it with glucotabs and 15g of carbs? It's still a choice thing

I think Glucotabs are free on prescription for the over 60's or it may be the over 65's now, if on Insulin. So, I would have either 2 or 7 years to go, but I do prefer Dolly mixtures and GF biscuit, when I assist myself with a hypo.

Thanks @Robinredbreast :) my mistake - I get them for my dad on script and he's 79 I do buy them for myself - though they usually end up in the bin as dust before I use them - I don't go low often but like to keep some in my handbag just in case - is there tax on them - never thought to find out - omg that's a whole new argument!

Now don't start on taxing glucotabs, arrggghhhhhh:p. I have found that when opened and not used much, they go hard, so no good in a hypo situation, I have tried it and it's like trying to chew on a brick :yuck:
