Hello all , this is my first time trying this for advice as I feel as if I'm going crazy.
I only was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 2 weeks ago and was given glucose machine . I was put on metformin 500mg morning and night and readings are only dow to 16.5 mm1/L, I'm drinking 6 pints of water (mainly after 9pm ) I am trying to keep to diet sheet but my gp and my diabetic nurse are telling me different things I'm aloud . Also nurse increased my dosage two 1000 mg twice daily and my gp then told me I should not be incerased so soon . I am not in anyway putting down the medical profession but I'm scared to eat the wrong thing or take to much or ltitle medication.
I suffer from severe anxiety and depression and feel scared to approach my nurse until next appointment in 2 weeks .
Should I listen to my doctors instructions or diabetic nurse, know it's not an easy question but any Advie at all would be appreciated

I too suffer severe anxiety and depression. If you're unhappy with your diagnosis I would try to get another opinion. I'm type one and didn't know until I was admitted to hospital with DKA. I know how hard it can be to go against the doctor and nurse when they are medical professionals but if you feel unhappy with what you are being told go seek a second opinion. A good doctor will not feel like you've gone behind their back and will in fact encourage it, in case another doctor might pick up something they have missed.

Welcome to the forum. I'll tag @daisy1 who will give you information for newcomers that hopefully will help you.

Personally, I'd be following the advice to eat to your meter - you can read an outline of how to do that here:
http://www.phlaunt.com/diabetes/14045524.php

The following link is an introduction to low carbing:
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/a-new-low-carb-guide-for-beginners.68695/

There is also a free low carb program you can sign up for and use for guidance elsewhere on this site:
https://www.diabetes.co.uk/lowcarb/

A good thing to remember: refined carbohydrates will raise your blood glucose more than anything else you eat.

I also meant to ask why you are drinking most of your water so late at night rather than spaced throughout the day? Doesn't it make it more difficult to sleep, having to get up to use the loo?

What are you eating?

How much do you weigh? I've been on both 500mg 2x daily and 1000mg 2x daily of metformin. They start you out at a lower dose and bring you up if needed to reduce your blood sugar levels. I was able to reduce mine down again by eating more non-starchy vegetables and lean meats, whole grains rather than white bread and sugary treats. What are you drinking? Water is good but what else are you drinking? and also DO NOT PANIC-it raises your blood sugar. Many people go through a panic stage when they are first diagnosed-this is somewhat normal. You can do this-it just takes a little time and knowledge.

Sounds like you are making some good changes already. It takes a little while to get your blood sugar numbers down even with the best diet. Again, DO NOT PANIC just keep making the good changes you have already started.

Also adding a little exercise to your routine can help with both lowering blood sugar and reducing anxiety. Walking for 20 minutes can help a lot but start with 10 minutes if that's what you can do.

First of all, you will be OK. Second of all, follow the links on indy51's post above and read the information. Wholemeal bread has just as much starch as white and this is something you will probably want to cut out alltogether until you get your sugar under control. The same goes for fruit, potatoes, rice of any color and pasta. You do not have to remove the skin from your chicken unless you don't like it. The eggs, meat, fish, chicken, veg, (no root veggies) salad veggies, cheese, cream, olives, and avocados are all good for lowering blood sugar. I think the easiest way to do things is to start out strict and then once your sugar is under control you can add to your diet using your meter to find whats right for you. Make sure you are not restricting fat or protein as you really don't want to start losing a ton of weight. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Forgot nuts, nuts are fantastic especially if you dont want to lose weight. Not peanuts so much though, those aren't actually nuts they are peas.

@Severe_Needle_phobia

Hello and welcome to the forum :) Here is the information, mentioned above, which we give to new members and I hope you will find it useful. It contains a lot of data about carbs which will help you to reduce them in your diet to lower your levels. Ask as many questions as you need to and someone will be able to help.

BASIC INFORMATION FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED DIABETICS

Diabetes is the general term to describe people who have blood that is sweeter than normal. A number of different types of diabetes exist.

A diagnosis of diabetes tends to be a big shock for most of us. It’s far from the end of the world though and on this forum you'll find well over 210,000 people who are demonstrating this.

On the forum we have found that with the number of new people being diagnosed with diabetes each day, sometimes the NHS is not being able to give all the advice it would perhaps like to deliver - particularly with regards to people with type 2 diabetes.

The role of carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are a factor in diabetes because they ultimately break down into sugar (glucose) within our blood. We then need enough insulin to either convert the blood sugar into energy for our body, or to store the blood sugar as body fat.

If the amount of carbohydrate we take in is more than our body’s own (or injected) insulin can cope with, then our blood sugar will rise.

The bad news

Research indicates that raised blood sugar levels over a period of years can lead to organ damage, commonly referred to as diabetic complications.

The good news

People on the forum here have shown that there is plenty of opportunity to keep blood sugar levels from going too high. It’s a daily task but it’s within our reach and it’s well worth the effort.

Controlling your carbs

The info below is primarily aimed at people with type 2 diabetes, however, it may also be of benefit for other types of diabetes as well.

There are two approaches to controlling your carbs:

  • Reduce your carbohydrate intake
  • Choose ‘better’ carbohydrates
Reduce your carbohydrates

A large number of people on this forum have chosen to reduce the amount of carbohydrates they eat as they have found this to be an effective way of improving (lowering) their blood sugar levels.

The carbohydrates which tend to have the most pronounced effect on blood sugar levels tend to be starchy carbohydrates such as rice, pasta, bread, potatoes and similar root vegetables, flour based products (pastry, cakes, biscuits, battered food etc) and certain fruits.

Choosing better carbohydrates

The low glycaemic index diet is often favoured by healthcare professionals but some people with diabetes find that low GI does not help their blood sugar enough and may wish to cut out these foods altogether.

Read more on carbohydrates and diabetes.

Over 145,000 people have taken part in the Low Carb Program - a free 10 week structured education course that is helping people lose weight and reduce medication dependency by explaining the science behind carbs, insulin and GI.

Eating what works for you

Different people respond differently to different types of food. What works for one person may not work so well for another. The best way to see which foods are working for you is to test your blood sugar with a glucose meter.

To be able to see what effect a particular type of food or meal has on your blood sugar is to do a test before the meal and then test after the meal. A test 2 hours after the meal gives a good idea of how your body has reacted to the meal.

The blood sugar ranges recommended by NICE are as follows:

Blood glucose ranges for type 2 diabetes
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 8.5 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (adults)
  • Before meals: 4 to 7 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 9 mmol/l
Blood glucose ranges for type 1 diabetes (children)
  • Before meals: 4 to 8 mmol/l
  • 2 hours after meals: under 10 mmol/l
However, those that are able to, may wish to keep blood sugar levels below the NICE after meal targets.

Access to blood glucose test strips

The NICE guidelines suggest that people newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes should be offered:

  • structured education to every person and/or their carer at and around the time of diagnosis, with annual reinforcement and review
  • self-monitoring of plasma glucose to a person newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes only as an integral part of his or her self-management education

Therefore both structured education and self-monitoring of blood glucose should be offered to people with type 2 diabetes. Read more on getting access to blood glucose testing supplies.

Is that a typo or do you really weigh 100lbs? Can I ask how old you are?

The thirst you're talking about won't go until your blood sugar comes down, but then it should improve a lot.

Hi and welcome @Severe_Needle_phobia
I am concerned like @azure with your weight. That's only just over 7 stone. Have you lost weight recently? Please continue to monitor your blood sugar levels and if they continue to go high I would suggest you need to speak to either your GP or nurse.
