Something MUST be done!!!!

I don't know if you've missed it elsewhere, but our very own IanD is going head-to-head against DUK on the Low-Carb diet in Hounslow, next Tuesday evening.

I'm going to lend my support, but if any of you are near to West London then it would be an excellent way of starting to do the "Something that must be done":

I just wish I lived near enough to lend my support. I really hope that Ian can make DUK listen to what he says and agree to at least consider adding an LC alternative to their dietary advise. It would certainly help his case if more of us could turn up to give him our support.

But to present other petitions from which ever way you look at it would come from a very tiny minority of diabetics. For HCP's to change it's stance/mantra to a VLC diet, which again Atkins, Southbeach diet and other various names VLC has been titled over the years in the aid of weight loss diets, plays right into the hands of the media and their stereo typical stance of T2 diabetes being self inflected!

finally - if any of you watch the 'one show' on BBC you may remember Dr Michael Moseley did a peice on High Intensity Training. His father had diabetes and he showed up as having potential for type 2. there is a part on their website where you can suggest a subject for the show. A good while ago now I suggested he followed his peice up with the misinformation T2's are getting from the NHS. I have no idea whether it was picked up - I suggested he look on this forum where many examples and studies are cited.

If a number more of us suggested it would be a worthwhile follow-up who knows? 7pm on BBC not a bad platform.

As I understand it, no-one is advocating any particular diet. Or blanket blood meters and strips being forced on all.

What I think is being proposed is a full range of dietary suggestion, plus the option of access to meters and strips for those who wish to monitor their own condition. To sum up:

1) A leaflet or booklet explaining how different food groups affect Diabetes

2) Access to a blood meter and strips for those who wish to have tight control of their levels through testing and trialling meals made up of different combinations of food groups and different amounts

3) access to HCP's who can expand and answer further questions on dietary factors and monitor the results of blood tests and/or meter readings.

This way everyone who wishes to, can be as involved in their own treatment as they feel comfortable with and take as much or as little responsibility for the hour-by-hour management of their condition as they wish in an informed way.

This is empowering the patient and helping the HCP's by reducing the amount of complications they need to address.

On another note, we may only be 20 people now, but we have to start somewhere. Women wouldnt have got the vote, for example, without a handful of people prepared to make a start on the issue. It is not arrogance. It is an exploration of a beginning because most of the people I have encountered on here have a great deal of empathy for their fellow sufferers and want to reach out and help instead of selfishly saying 'I'm OK, sod the lot of you out there'

That is a very interesting article phoenix. I have quoted from it below in order to address a couple of points:

I’ve observed over the years that most people check their blood glucose levels without thinking. They monitor at the same time or times every day, usually in the morning or before meals. Sometimes they record the numbers, or their meter does. Maybe they show the numbers to the doctor at appointments. He looks at them for a few seconds and then hands them back. If they’re too high, he might increase a dose or add a new medicine.

The inability or unwillingness of the Doctor does not negate the benefit that could be obtained by a different response from the HCP's.

That is why we also need involvement from HCP's and education, alongside access to (not mandatory) testing, as this next paragraph shows it can be beneficial if used properly as a tool

With structured blood glucose monitoring, people were taught to write down events that could impact their blood glucose control, such as exercise and changes in diet, along with blood glucose results from seven significant points — two hours after eating and at bedtime, for example — during the day. They were then taught, along with their health-care providers, how to interpret and identify patterns in these results to best address any issues with their diabetes control.

Polonsky’s studies have shown that people using structured monitoring gained much more confidence in their diabetes care, used fewer test strips, and had lower A1C levels as well. Confidence is good for you.

To sum up after reading your link - I think that blaming meters for a lack of change in diabetes control is like blaming ovens for burnt food.Its not the tool, its how you use it and how good the instructions are.

I'm sorry but when did I say that "I'm OK, sod the lot of you out there". As usual any voice that doesnt agree with the low carber views here is attacked and words put in their mouths, I thought I was entitled to an opinion but clearly as I dont agree with some of what is said here I am called selfish :lol: :lol:

I wish you well in your cause, but do I think you will make one iota of difference? No, I dont. Selfish? No, just a realist.

Yes Blondage that is a brilliant offer one I did notice at the time but like everyone else was then distracted by pumps...

Thanks for reminding us Mary. It's probably because of offers like that the gunk appeared. I'm sure like most members I have no problem with people disagreeing just wish rather than just trolling and trashing those that do would offer some reasoned debate rather than negativity, bullying, innuendo and aggression. I really don't understand what their motives are. Even when people bend over backwards to try and be inclusive they don't seem to care.

And I am not a low-carber. I eat between 80-100g of carbs a day as part of my weight loss plan.

Sid... I thought the message here was 'eat to your meter'... that could be via low carb, low GI, portion control, etc... I don't see anyone pushing VLC other than those who are objecting to a message that's not here?


A message to Everyone
A number of posts in this thread have been reported; along with a number of PM's to admin so I will wait for Benedict to make a decision on what's what... BUT I will say this... there are ways and means of expressing opinion... 99% of people in this thread have managed that without causing offence or upsetting others... if you are going to post in this thread please make sure that you think before you post and ensure that your posts are presented in a friendly and tactful manor. I am sure that I am not in a minority when I say that I personally am getting increasingly irritated with those who purposeful de-rail threads with posts that are at best un-tactful and at worst purposefully offensive.

Testing means nothing without the education and support about the benefits of moderating your carb intake.

If you give everyone a meter and tell them to eat a 50% carbohydrate diet, what do you think that the result will be?

If testing is ineffective, why do you do it?

That's the real issue with you isn't it. The rest of the stuff about VLC, which no one else mentioned, is a smokescreen. We're a burden to the proper diabetics like you. Very offensive

Ouch I missed that - this thread was getting a bit intense and I was starting to doze.. but that is pretty bad. I'm a type 2 diabetic - heck it must be my fault and I only have myself to blame.
