Hi all,

Has anyone had a hypo while being on this diet?

I'm just asking because my BG seems to be pretty good staying between 4.3-5.3 without meds, but it got me wondering why they don't go lower than this?

hi all thanks for all the support, doesnt it make u wonder though that if we as a group can support each other throygh this that our hsp could not arrange a support group to meet once every couple of weeks to offer tips and advice to others who r just starting the diet and exercise plan? imagine the money the nhs would save in meds alone if those who could manage to stick to diet with a bit of support from likeminded people!
immis ive never had a hypo and the lowest ive had is a 3.9 i think. not sure why no hypos but possibly cos body working properly again?

Went to see my diabetic specialist today. Wanted nothing to do with this diet. While she didn't dispute the findings of the Newcastle study, she down played the effectiveness of it. I feel very jealous of those of you whose gp has been supportive.

On the diet front, had a very depressing couple of days. Put on a pound each of the last two days. I've been following the diet very strictly and not cut corners anywhere. I'm only 2 pounds lighter than when I started last Wednesday. Surely the first week is when the big weight loss occurs. I have to say, I nearly jacked it in this morning. I have put myself through this and for what? To lose two pounds? That end doesn't justify the means.
Still sticking with it though, dragging myself to the gym tomorrow and I hope I see positive results. On a positive note, BG this morning was 5.4 and managed to pick up some tins of slimfast at Boots in Cheapside 50% off

I've found Slimfast tastes much better than the Asda equivalent, even made with water as opposed to milk. I'm contemplating making one with hot water and having a "hot chocolate"!

Geordie:

I hope that it's our bodies getting better. 3.9 is the lowest I've gone to. Weird that the light-headedness that comes just before/during a hypo has gone too.

Crouchingpeeky:
When you are at the gym do you do weights? Remember that muscle weighs more than fat. Secondly are you adding milk or water to your shakes?

Immis,

Not been to the gym since I started the diet (haven't been since December truth be told!). Starting again tomorrow. Going to start with a session on the cross trainer or bike and see how I feel after that.

Been making the shakes with water not milk. Diet has consisted of shake for breakfast, one for lunch and a home made soup (French onion or vegetable) as per the provided recipes. The results I've had the last two days are beyond depressing. If I'd have had a McDonalds meal it would have equated to the same.

I've gone for the Optislim shakes. They're readily available over here, related to the ones used in the diet and pretty cheap. Oh and tons of flavours.

I too only have one at breakfast and one at lunch with a homemade soup for dinner.

I try and do a 1.5 mile fast paced walk at night before dinner, although I have now started going to the gym. (no weights, just cardio)

It worked for me last week, don't know what will happen this week...here's hoping.

Dont give up I dont know why you weigh yourself every day I do it once a week , your weight will fluctuate according to fluid retention, Fluid loss what you have eaten etc etc, Set yourself a day and stick with it, I fell foul of this last week, got weighed on the sat had lost nothing yet got weighe don the monday morning and had lost 3 pounds.
Dont panic or worry if youve only lost a little bit its still a loss, dont forget your body will be going thropugh massive changes from eating a relatively large amount to eating little.
You def need to goto gym or add exercise into your plan, it makes a massive difference, all i can say im five weeks in, and have had bad days but feel and look so much better(other people telling me how fit i look )and more importantly my BGs are normally between the 4.5 and 5.5 range.
This iisnt a short term fix its a long term lifestyle change.
Add weights into your gym session, you dont have to be lifting like arnie to build muscle and muscle aids with insulin sensitivity.
Keep it up, a week isnt long enough.

Evening all, just completed week 5. Weigh in this morning, 26lbs lost so far, down from 15stones to 13'2", BMI finally in the "healthy" range. Feeling good, lots of energy though managed to pick up a cold last week, and bloods raised a little over the last few days - does anyone else get that when they are fighting a cold? ( also had a flu jab last week, though sure not connected).

I have just started week six and so far have lost one stone three pounds so not a great deal of weight, but I am hoping I have gained muscle as I had been spending a lot of time in the gym until I got this flippin cold!!

day 10 - and I'm still going!! I've now lost 7 pounds since I started, also lost four inches from round my stomach. This lunchtime I felt like I had plenty of energyso I got myself down the gym. I didn't go crazy, I did an hour on the cross trainer at a low level. Managed to burn 495 calories though.

I'm really starting to enjoy the shakes. I'm a big fan of the chocolate flavour (slimfast) but have the caramel and cafe latte flaovours at home which I'll try over the weekend. I actually intend incorporating these into my diet after this is finished. Perhaps replace breakfast or lunch.

Reading up about this diet and the comments of those they have endertaken it really has educated me on the effects of carbs. Before I started this diet, I would have sandwiches for lunch everyday (white "toastie" bread) and for dinner I'd be having white rice and white pasta thinking I was eating quite healthily. I know once I return to eating, I''ll be drastically reducing my portion sizes and switching to the brown varients of rice and pasta.

I know what you mean.
I'm really enjoying hte floavours of my shakes too (Optislim)

When I go back to eating it will be decent portions with very low/no carbs, high in proteins and veg.
I swapped to wholegrain pasta and rice when I was diagnosed with type 2 in oct last year.
I love the taste of them, prefer it to the white stuff. In fact, it makes me feel fuller quicker and tastes better.

hi all i know what u all mean , try low carb bread, just google low carb bread recipes, its not like classic bread and you dont bake it in a loaf style, its baked flat on a tray then cut into slices, ive tried it and it doesnt spike my bg at all and if you add sesame seeds etc its actually quite edible, particularly if u enjoy a slice of bread, you can also slice it to whatever size you want so make them smaller than 'normal' slice of bread.
It actually also does help with your digestion lol due to seeds no doubt, i know once this is over this is what ill be using to substitute bread, means i can have a bacon sandwich without worrying about massive spikes.
its amazing how quickly you see a difference in your body though and those are excellent figures crouching.
keep at it, have to say i feel great at minute except for slight cold
