starting newcastle diet on 2nd jan

Beancounter if you are only eating between 600 and 800 cals a day I am at a loss as to where the glucose is coming from I would have thought that all the carbs in your diet would be going straight out as energy, but then I am no expert especially on this type of diet.

I know, Sid - that is what I thought :(

My doctor is giving me a ring on monday to see how the diet is going so I will ask him about it .

Thanks :)

my game was cancelled today thank god lol so i'll have to stay in and have my salad watching england

I have just got some free podcasts from the NHS website to use on my ipod for three half hour running sessions each week that are supposed to take me from couch to 5K in nine weeks!! I got the link from this forum somewhere...can't remember exactly where

Has anyone tried these? Hopefully I will give them a shot next week if the snow is gone....

right on a dwoner today i tried a couple of slices of white bread and spiked, had that instead of shake to see what would happen. A 9.0! so that tells me my love affair with white bread is over, it is the hags from the scottish play, never again will it darken my mouth ........boooooo.
On the upside i made some low carb bread which actually doesnt taste like the inner sole from my walking boots, its like a flat bread added some garlic powder and some sesame seeds to flaxseed so shud by high in fibre and edible for when im back eating again and need a bread fix.
Need some help and motivation guys i'm hitting the wall, not sure how much weight i will have lost the mora but not expecting miracles, been off all week so havent cycled since last monday, been to gym five times but mostly anaerobic exercise.

Hope the weigh in goes well, Geordie.

I have had a few higher numbers this weekend, but I have been full of cold and taking cough medicine that contains glucose!

Hi All,

Well my first week on the diet is over and here are the results:

Starting weight = 111.7kg
Weight now = 106.7kg

Also haven't taken my meds since I started.

Feeling good !!!

Hi Geordie,

I also hit a wall this week. I found this the hardest week so far. Only lost 1kg this week which was disappointing. 9.3kgs in total. Only 3 weeks left though so I am going to try and motivate myself again and give it all I have. I am going to start Atkins induction as soon as this diet is over. Atkins will be like a feast after this diet!

Come on Geordie. Go for it. Not long now. :D

hi antmos I agree lol got to keep going.
Lost a pound today but more importantly my fbg this morning was 4.6
Three weeks to go so big push going on now but cant cycle to work as its too icy and wont cycle on roads as too dangerous ;-(
everyone keep going and dont class this as eight weeks its for life, once diet is over its about finding the foods that spike us and cutting them out, thats my plan anyway.

Hi. Geordie.
Just a monday update.
Lost another 4lbs this week 22lbs in total now weighing in at 188lbs so my BMI is now in the normal range i.e below 25 .
Visceral fat dropped another %age point to 13% but still too high.

FBG 5.4 so not as good as yours but still in the normal range so overall very happy with the results. Just need to get rid of the visceral fat - thinking that if its not down to where I want to be at the end of the 8 weeks I may continue for another week or two cos that is the really damaging stuff.

If you are having problems with the diet then try eating the veg between the shakes. I eat grilled toms&mushroom for breakfast , salad at lunch , various cooked veg in evening so if you have the shakes in between it seems like you are always eating!! Also the diet soups are a change from the shakes.

I started my diet last Wednesday. I have to say I thought it was going to be hard, but I didn't realise how hard it would be. These first few days everything seems to remind me of food. Also, it's like I suddenly have the nose of a bloodhound. Walking down the street the smells eminating from cafes, bakers etc seem to have magnified ten fold.
Bloods have dropped from 15-20 pre diet to 5-8. Delighted with this and that is without meds. Only lost 3 pounds so far, will increase over time. 14st 7 to start with a BMI of 32.

I'm amazed to read some people have been going the gym whilst on this diet, I'd love to go to give the weight loss a nudge, but my energy levels are very low. Does this improve?

Hi crouchingpeeky

If you read the Newcastle blurb it states that after a few days your body learns to access your fat for energy.I ran, swam and walked my way through my eight weeks, three pieces of exercise per day.

I found that I could start exercise feeling hungry but after a few minutes this faded as the energy was released.I think the amount of exercise I did hastened the de-fatting process and was the reason I bottomed out at 12 stone after 7 weeks of the diet.Four months on my weight has finally changed:this last week I have been consistently weighing 11stone 12!

My bloods are now normal and I eat what I like up to 1800 calories or so per day (maintenance level).Instead of checking the type of food I just count calories throughout the day.Today I had to do my 3 mile run early so I started with a muesli bar (140 calories),after had shreddies and a banana (calculated to be 350-400 calories) went swimming and did my 30 lengths and are typing this while digesting my lunch of scotch egg and salad (your guess as to calories). What makes it difficult is I also have to work out how many extra calories are being consumed by the exercise.

Last week I changed the emphasis on testing from fasting blood sugars (total range has been 4.7-5.5 over the last two months) to testing 2 hours after each meal.I have always been in the non-diabetic range of <7.8,normally between 5.0 and 6.5 on average.Excuse me I am off for the afternoon one hour dog walk!

Good luck,I think exercise is part of the key to reversing this awful condition.

I found going to gym was no problem as well as cycling to work and playing rugby.

It definetly assists speeding up the weight loss process

I do a lot of anaerobic stuff at gym as muscle seems to assist in the insulin sensitivity of the body.

Bgs back down to normal after ydays glitch

Glad your blood sugars are looking okay, Geordie.

I have found that as soon as start exercising I feel energised, even if I feel a bit tired before hand. I have been trying to do some exercise most days - the gym about four or five days a week, and walking on the other. I am going to try jogging this week if I am feeling better - eek!

Having said all that, I haven't exercised for the last few days, other than a walk through the snow as I am full of cold and just feel like staying at home under a blanket!!
