starting newcastle diet on 2nd jan

i felt so guilty i had to go and beast myself at gym lol back to cycling to work the mora so all good

Hi Geordie,

I wouldnt worry about your two biscuits. They were giving out small packets of those chocolate coins in gold foil at the station on Monday. I took a packet before I even realised what they were. I thought I would get rid of them at home. Well I ripped open the packet and ate all 5 coins in the car before I even got home! Felt really guilty afterwards but they tasted sooooo good! So far this week I am still on track with weight loss so the odd cheat doesnt seem to do too much to the overall result. Your weight loss is great. I am down almost 8 kgs but so far not one person has told me I am looking good or anything. How much do you have to lose before people notice?

Not sure antmos but if you start looking like an anatomically correct skeleton then i think you have gone to far lol.

Im at hippo stage lol, a slim hippo though, possibly a racing hippo.

Hey Antmos, You are looking good - have you lost weight? Hope that makes you feel chirpier!!

A couple of people have noticed my weight loss - it is nice to know it can be noticed, it is just a shame I am still not a skinny minnie lol :) I think I am still at beached whale stage, myself!

I have lost 12 pounds since xmas, but I had lost a stone before that, so getting on for two stone. I am much happier about the fact that I have halved my meds, though :D

exactly beancounter this is about the meds really weight loss is nice but its getting under control thats most important.
im def looking slimmer can see my ribs !!!!
I havent seen them in twenty years

Today I was finally asked if I have lost weight. Felt good! My clothes are getting a lot looser too. I am also still a hippo though like you Geordie but a slightly sexier version than when I started! I know it is all about the meds and I am doing really well there but the weight loss is great! I havent seen my ribs in about 30 years! Still cant though :?

Just a quick update from me.

10 days into the diet now and I'm finding it easy to stick to; largely down to the fantastic soups my wife makes for me every day (I'm so lucky).

I've lost 10 lbs in 10 days, which seems to be the norm and I stopped taking my meds (2 x 500mg of Metformin per day) after day 6 as my BG had dropped to below 5. For the last few days it has stayed between 5 and 6; which I am delighted with.

My weight is now 17 stone and I've decided that once I get down to 16 stone I shall rejoin the local gym. Had to create two new holes on my belt yesterday as my trousers were loose and I was on the very last hole in the belt already. This to me is more important than my actual weight loss - getting my waist line down.

Already thinking about what happens when the 8 weeks is up and I'm planning what things I will be adding back into my diet. That, in my opinion, will be the hardest part of this exercise; what healthy eating habits to adopt and adhere to thereafter.

The other thing about this diet is that it's saving me a small fortune. When I think how much I spent every day on food and drink whilst now it's just a £4 tub of Asda own brand shakes every 3 days. :D

hi ardbeg i concur its saving me a fortune, married with cycling to work every day i must be about 150 a month better off!!!!
FBG was 4.7 this morning so it seems to be staying around 4.5-5.5 every morning which i am really pleased with and even some of the staff are now saying the can see a big difference lol im taking it as a compliment cos they wudnt normally say anything lol
Someone said the other day they wont be able to call me no neck anymore lol as i now have a visible neck lol

Only lost two pounds this week, but BG still good so I am happy xx I have decided I am gaining a lot of muscle at the gym :D

Plus, I am finally in my "slim into" jeans and have got a new belt!!

Ardberg - I keep thinking (dreaming) about the food I will eat when the eight weeks are up. I will probably follow Viv's modified Atkin's diet or something similar as I think lower carbing is the way for me. I am planning on replacing a shake with a meal gradually over a week or so.

I would be saving money on the diet, but the hubby is cooking for himself and our daughter for the eight weeks and he is spending a fortune on ready meals etc... I am looking forward to getting back into the kitchen and so are they!!

I actually enjoy the shakes and they are dead handy to make in my office or when I'm out on the road. I keep a shaker, mineral water bottle and tub of Asda shake mix in the boot of my car; so whilst I'm dashing about all day measuring up peoples roofs and collecting solar orders I can quickly make myself a meal in between appointments.

Must be a man thing.

How can I get a copy of Viv's modified Atkin's diet ?

I did the Atkins Diet several years ago and managed to lose about 3 stone. My problem was my weight plateued at around 16 stone and I lost my willpower then. Found it difficult to stick to that eating regime all the time and knowing what I know now; all that fat couldn't have been doing me any good either.

I had bacon and egg every day and ate copius amounts of pepperamis all day, washed down with cans of Pepsi Max.

Hi Ardberg

Atkins wrote his diet for weight loss, but it's wonderful for BG levels too!.

If you decide to give it a try, decide what amount of carbs you want to eat in a day, and just add on good quality low GI carbs to the basic induction diet as per the sticky thread. As you up the carbs, so you lower the fat, but don't try to cut it out. My cholesterol levels/lipid profile are never better than when I'm eating low carb. Just go for natural fats and avoid manufactured foods.

As for the pepperami - useful as a snack, but high in preservatives. Don't eat too many! Pepsi Max - but just my personal opinion

Everyone plateaus - our bodies get used to being a certain weight and resist dropping too low. If you do stall, drop the carbs a bit (often they creep back in ), maybe up the exercise a touch if you can, and try to be patient. I stalled last summer because of strawberries and cream . I find low-carbing for my BG levels rather than weight loss helps, because that's what I focus on. Weight loss is a welcome side effect.

I'm hoping my Slimfast trial will shake my metabolism out of its complacency. Have to confess to a take-away curry on Friday evening! I just had a main course with cauliflower, so maybe not too much harm, and it wasn't an enormous portion. I only had 1 shake that day.

I'm afraid to say that I hate missing a shake because I'm counting the days until I finish the blessed things. I don't mind them, but this way of eating doesn't suit me, and I'm craving for something to get my teeth into - hence the curry. I think I'm trying to make my version of the diet low-carb as well as low-calorie  . They are very useful as portable meals, though - I bought 6 ready-made for lunches, washed out the bottles as I finished them, and now make one up in a morning, pour into the bottle, and take that for lunch. Also a cheap way of eating, as others have said.

Weigh-in day tomorrow!

Hi Viv,

I think Atkins is a great "blokes" diet; as most of us love bacon and eggs and of course STEAKS. :D

One thing that did concern me was NO FRUIT. I love fruit and intend to start eating an apple a day plus loads of berries; mainly rasberries and blueberries when I come off the Newcastle Diet.

You add in fruit as you progress through the different stages of the diet; while perfectly safe for longer, the Induction Phase is only meant to be for two weeks.

Berries, apricots and plums are among the lowest-carb fruits. 1 apricot = approx 4g carb; blueberries approx. 8g per 75g serving; 1 medium plum = approx 9g carb; 1 medium apple - 21g carb. Those are according to the Collins Gem carb counter.

You have to be very careful with fruits as some of them contain a lot of sugar - I can't eat bananas or grapes, but others can. I prefer to up my veg intake and have small portions of fruit, except in the strawberry season  but each to his own :D

A friend of mine was told by her diabetic specialist GP to eat hard northern fruits not soft tropical ones, because of the sugar content. There may be a rule of thumb in there somewhere!

Work out how many carbs you want to eat in a day, and eat what you want to that level. Keep testing to see what's happening to your blood glucose.

I'm too lazy to bother with all the working out, which is why I stick to Induction  .
