starting newcastle diet on 2nd jan

Geordie, I would like to ask your opinion on something. Even though I am not quite done with week 1, already I am starting to look at post diet introduction of solid foods and the way to keep the tight BG control I am beginning to get now. I am thinking of doing the ND one week a month, just to keep any visceral fat at bay, and also to keep my body in a very rigid diet mode. Pre diet my carbs were always low, always under 20g a day, more often than not under 10g a day. What do you think? If I can manage eight straight weeks of shakes only, then one week a month will be a breeze. Do you think it will help for long term management?

Hi to all the contributors to this thread.

Well - I've been back to NZ and picked up 2 months supply of shakes, dusted off my walking shoes and bought new gel inner soles, made a list of veges for my trip to the market tomorrow and told the hubby he's on his own for meals for the next couple of months. Only thing to left to do is to set the alarm for 6am so I can go for a walk and, of course, actually start and stick to the ND.

Geordie, I hear what you are saying about this not being a permanent fix, but it has to be better than just barreling on in a downward direction and hoping I'll wake up one morning and my Type II will have gone away. I'm as much interested in the positive effects on my pancreas and lowering my bgs as the weight loss and have no illusions that this could be hard going at times. But unless I get off my watusi and actually DO something, nothing is going to change is it!

So wish me luck. The weather here is cooling down nicely and the humidity starting to dissipate; all positives for exercising in the tropics.

Can't promise that I will post daily, but I'll be keeping a diary to record progress and pop in and out when I've something to share.

Thanks, Geordie, for starting this thread; it's encouraged so many people to give it a go, myself included.

Hi palmygal
For sure it puts the onus and ownership of our disease on our own shoulders, and it is a great start, only thing id say is make sure you contact your Health provider before coming off meds.

Defren strangely just had an email from Prof Talyors research assistants asking how im doing etc and one of the things ive mentioned is a post ND eating plan to try to maintain the drops in BGs etc, if i recieve anything back I'll let you all know.

I would suggest whichever diet we decide upon it should be based on low carbs and portion control as Sid Bonkers alluded to very early on this blog.

Good luck

Thanks for your reply, Geordie.

One thing I picked up on in your post was about coming off medication. To be honest I hadn't given that much thought as I had intended to stay on it (Metformin 500mg x 2/day) until my bs started coming down.

I'd be interested to know from yourself and other contributors how quickly it starts to fall and if there is a danger it plummets as opposed to decreasing gradually.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Today is day five for me. If you look at my thread "a geordie doing the Newcastle diet" I have logged my BG's each day, so you can see how they are going. I am on Metformin 500mg twice a day.

Just read your posts, it's really helpful that you are posting all your BG figures. You have done very well.

I don't test every day but keep a daily record of my weight.I started kind of proper ND on 16 March I weighed 11st 11 then and today after being on caravan holiday for 10 days I weigh 10st 13. (lost 3lb on holiday). I was 13 st 1 on 15th January.

It was hard on holiday, I like to walk but my husband has a bad leg and he likes to eat out, so I took a blender and lots of veg and had veg soup for breakfast to set me up and had shakes during the day. I cheated a bit, Morrisons in Oban hadnt got any salad dishes, so they asked me to buy a tomato soup and warmed it up for me. On the way back home we stopped in Inverary and I had half a fish (with batter) and my blood sugar went up to 7.3 after 2 hours.

I am eating celery and lettuce cucumber etc. I also eat tinned tomatoes if I can't get fresh, Today - on holiday - I started with veg soup, had salad for dinner on way home It's very hard to eat out, I ask for salad and they put extra meat on because i say I don't want chips. I find it easy not to drink alcohol though.

I am using ASDA shakes, the strawberry is good, very filling, I mix it with a little cold water and mix well and top up with hot water. Does anyone else take the shakes hot or is it just me?

Keep up the good work, it is so inspiring.

Thank you, I am finding really easy to be honest.

I don't have hot shakes, all mine are mixed with cold water and drunk that way.

You did exceptionally well to stay on track on holiday - well done!

May I ask a silly but possibly important question...

Has anyone who has tried this diet or similar found constipation to be an issue?

Not constipation exactly, (oh heck how do I say this)? As there is a lot less waste to get rid of, there is not as much, and it's a tad more solid. I hope you see what I mean, it's a weird old subject to discuss in detail.

How I agree, the water output is unreal. I am never of the darn loo. Are you eating fiber of any kind? Being bunged up is not good.

I am only eating the tomato soup recipe at the moment but it says that should be the fibre intake we need...not sure what I am doing wrong? Maybe I need to try some roasted sprouts or something green :D

The Atkins shakes are 5g of fiber per serving, I think that is what is stopping the problem with me. If you are having shakes, could you change them to ones with a higher fiber content?

could you change them to ones with a higher fiber content?

I am using Asda's own brand which has 1.8g of fibre per serving there in may lie the issue lol. I will definatley have too start on the green veg I think :D

Hi all
Just been reading your posts regarding lack of toilet time lol

I found exactly the same particulalry after being so regular with the metfartin, its gone from the sublime to the ridiculous lol

I think your body takes a bit of time to adjust but if you are eating the required amount of veg that should enable you to maintain an reg attendance protocol lol.

As far as coming off meds palymgal dont do anything unless youve consulted with ur health care professional, although i just stopped mine but i was only on four metfartin a day, and tbh it didnt seem to be making any difference to me any way other than very reg trips to aforementioned toilet lol.

keep up the good work

Things all rosy here

It does for me - but I don't need to visit quite so often.

Week 6 of my Newcastle diet.

After the last couple of weeks weigh in at my GP's, I thought I had plateaued, losing a kilo per week but this week I had lost 2.5kg which I couldn't believe, so I have now beaten my target of 12.5 stone with 2 weeks to go on the diet, I started at about 14st9lbs and am now at 12st5lbs, all my glucose levels have been within the normal ranges for weeks now, I have the bayer contour tester so at the end of the diet I will try and put my blood tests on the forum.

I have managed to get another prescription of optifast for when I finish in a couple of weeks time so that will help with my plan of gradually reintroducing food back into my diet, which will hopefully still let me lose a bit more weight as the BMI for my height says I should be 10st2lbs, I think I would be far too thin if I was that weight but am hoping to get to about 11st.

I bought some 34" jeans only 2 weeks ago and they are now dropping off me so I might be getting a cheap pair of 32" which I was last in about 25 years ago, it really gave me a boost the other night when I went to my friend and his wife's house and when she saw me she started crying in amazement.

If you are only just starting this diet then honestly, you cant believe the difference it makes to how you feel and look, not just to yourself but other people as well, but you must stick to it to get the best results you can as the main reason is obviously to reverse this disease before it takes it toll in years to come.

Keep at it everyone.

Brilliant results ive no idea, its amazing the response that you get when someone you havent seen for ages looks at you in amazement lol.

32" jeans phah lol ive just got into 34's lol, excellent though well done and as you rightly say its about the sugars but the weight loss is a welcome bonus.

I think the BMI thing is flawed as it doesnt take into account muscle mass etc some of the england rugby players are actually classed as morbidly obese lol if you use the BMI scale.

Keep it up, two more weeks to go but beware when you start back on food expect an increase in weight but dont get disheartened its just your body readjusting.

Thanks Geordie,

I think your right about the BMI thing, I have noticed that the fat I have left is quite flabby now and I will need to work on toning and building some muscle back (not as much as the rugby players though), went on a bike ride tonight and tomorrow going to the gym so hopefully I will be able to build up my stamina.

I must admit that apart from the first week I have had loads of energy and have even slept so much more soundly as the weight has come off, it was a nightmare for my wife as I was a terrible snorer and she says that has stopped as well, so it has lots of other positive side effects apart from the weight loss and lower sugars.

Excellent results Ivenoidea, it all points in the right direction doesnt it, got to keep on it though, ive had a few fall offs since i stopped the diet but then got straight back on it and started again.

Its hard as there is no definitive plan for after the eight weeks, hopefully in the future Prof Taylors team can give us something to follow, no doubt based on a low carb regime as that seems the most effective.

I feel good lol, could write a song about that lol
