Does anyone supplement their zinc?

If you do, could you suggest which you take and why? I'm at the beginning of my research.

Thanks!

I take a simple vitamin C and zinc combo (Tesco own brand orange effervescent ones), said to help the immune system rather than vitamin C alone. I started taking it years ago when I was getting so many really bad colds every winter. I (touch wood) very rarely get colds now and when I do they are very mild.

I started taking vitamin C and zinc in the middle of Winter when a wound on one of my shins refused to heal. The injury was sustained some seven months earlier.

It's common for wounds to heal more slowly on the lower leg than other sites, especially where there's infection or swelling and of course diabetes doesn't help. That said, this was a superficial wound, the initial swelling had long subsided and there had never been any sign of infection, yet I seemed to be making no progress.

Fearing that diarrhoea, a side effect of metformin, might be interfering with vitamin and mineral absorption, I decided to try a course of vitamin C and zinc tablets. Within a month, the wound had healed completely.

Cheap supplements can be a waste of money. The more reputable brands, Solgar , and the like use more bio available products so your body can absorb them more easily and you get the dose you are aiming for. Patrick Halfords Immune C is very good in my experience. Don’t forget that Vitamin C causes diarrhoea if you take to much for your body. It will get rid of it in water. (Which can be handy for occasional constipation.

I used a zinc and magnesium combo. It contained chelated versions of these metals so they get absorbed easily. It helped reduce my sugars by about 1 mmol.

Hi I take a high absorption zinc complex which has chelated and fully reacted zinc - the zinc is picolinate and bisglyginate plus Copper I also take magnesium glycinate seems to suit me.

Zinc Citrate is usually considered the best absorbable form. Gluconate, Glycinate, Picolinate are also pretty good. Do not get zinc sulfate, by far the worse absorbing form. Citrate is just one of the best absorbable forms of a lot of minerals.

A lot of our supplements used to come in 30mg, 50mg or 60mg that we used to recommend. Generally we used to recommend keeping under a 100mg from all the different supplements a person was taking. Most of your multiples don't have high doses, but they could so you have to look at them. Plus say you are taking something for the prostrate and a multiple and you want to add something for the immune system that also has zinc. You would want to watch what total you might be taking.(Sometimes doctors recommend high doses, but usually not for an extended period of time.) Too much zinc can cause the opposite effect by lowering the immune system. Zinc is important, it has lots of great research, it's good for all sorts of various things, it's just some people think more is better and there is a cut off best amount.

I have actually been on Zinc sulfate as a prescribed medication for the last 30 years. This was due to many blood blisters in my mouth and a few elsewhere. The diagnosis came from Guy's in London. It had nothing to do with diabetes then, when I was about 35 and have only been officially diabetic for a couple of years. I also take colecalciferol (Vit D), and Ferrous sulfate. I would suggest before taking any supplements that you need to have a reason why, and seek medical advice. Also, if you are diabetic and you need such supplements on prescription they will be free

Thanks @janer2234 . The main driver is my OH who resents that as he gets a few miles on the clock (he's a fighting fit 76yr old), he bruises more and places like his shins graze apparently more readily than before. I have been experiencing hair drop, despite my best thyroid results in, well, ..... ever, and all the usual NHS test biochemistry being "fine". So nothing major, so no really heavy weight supplementation.

We have begun a zinc supplement, to go along with the Vit D3+K2, VitC (seemed like a good idea during Covid times) and Magnesium. He also takes Turmeric with Ginger.
I do agree with you that supplements shouldn't be fashion statements, but it is the devil's own job to get some of these things tested. I intend to ask my Endo about it when I next see him, as he seems more holistic than anyone else on my radar, at the moment.

Thanks again.

Veruccas and Skin Tags Cure

Verrucas and Skin Tags are a common problem, but one that did not go away easily for me. I had tried both Salicylic Acid and Cryotherapy, with little effect. What I did not know was that whether you get verrucas or not depends upon your immune system a lot of the time.

Soon afterwards I was trying a treatment that is supposed to prevent you catching the common cold, namely 1000 milligrams of Vitamin C with Zinc twice a day. I found that the Vitamin C with Zinc gave my immune system enough of a boost to eliminate my verrucas and skin tags without further treatment. And that saved a lot of time and money for me.

Other people I have met online say that it is the Zinc in the tablets that have the effect, they were brave enough to take the discovery further.

Hi Guys - I just recently brought some Magnesium Citrate tablets, been 2 days on these. Apparently aid digestion and help regulate Sugar Levels. Anyone else have a good experience by taking Magnesium being a T2?

Thanks. Neither of us have verrucas or skin tags, but I know many folks find when their blood glucose control and insulin resistance improves their skin tags disappear.

The thread title is about supplementing zinc and though there are some mentions of zinc and magnesium you might get a better response on a thread with magnesium in the title. Would you like me or another mod to move your post to its own thread?

@0110 I supplement with magnesium glycinate rather than citrate which causes me to have loose bowels. Mag Glycinate is claimed assists with sleep (I have not noticed a difference).
Chose mag glycinate partly because I saw on twitter that both @DocRunner and @JenUnwin (@LowCarbGP 's wife) use that form.

I started a zinc supplement along with Vit D3 at start of covid. No idea if it helped, didn't get covid, but we don't socialise (or work) in crowded places
