The question to ask is..

Would you use colourful & unprofessional expletives in the presence your students, potential clients or just plain throwing them out there regarding connecting in the company of people you do not know..

This is an open forum with a varied comunity.

As a member of 2 rock bands I mindfully gauge my audience.. New venues? We as a band wish to be invited back.
As a "front man." What is pushed vocally through a potential 1k rigg hinges on that. ;)

The English language is rich enough, without having to contravene "Ofcom" protocols..
@Jaylee you have changed my original question and posed another which is not the correct thing to do. Although you do not say explicitly what you consider to be profanity, would I be right in thinking that you feel it to be the use of an incorrect register?

@SueJB . Profanity would appear to be something different to individuals.
Perhaps the forum should publish a list of words that are considered to be profanity.

I totally agree @therower. As a language specialist, it's important for me to see words being used correctly. It would indeed be useful to see such a list or at least to have a definition of what is considered to be profane. I fear that my understanding seems to be different than most. The word which derives from the uncountable noun "blood" is not, using the following definition "shows disrespect for a religion or religious things" Perhaps my question should be moved to the Diabetes Discussion thread so everyone can join in.

Off topic, my original question was about everyone's idea on what profanity is and not how it should be dealt with @urbanracer

There is no particular "topic" on this thread. you've wished for "ideas" ( thoughts even.) on your enquiry regarding "profanity.?" I gave mine...

... or maybe try it once & see how many stars you get.?. ;)

Profanity as seen by the forum is very tight.
There is a very good reason for that, in my opinion. We like the forum to be a safe place for everyone. With a bit of work everyone can word their feelings without using possible offensive language. But offensive language that is once read can't be un-read, so we simply don't allow it. You wouldn't want parents preventing their diabetic children from visiting the forum because of the language used, would you?
Sometimes this policy leads to pretty strange situations (for instance, I can't refer to my male chicken without getting asterisked by the forum software, I can refer to both of them though).
I believe it's better to err on the side of caution, so I simply laugh at the male chicken business or the occasional asterisked word where I misjudged.
If profanity desperately wants out on the forum I simply write asterisks in the first place. Very satisfying.

Profanity as seen by me personally is along the lines of the forum when I speak to the world and don't know who will hear or read me.
In private, with friends or even on my facebook page I use lots of words and phrases the forum would never allow. I'm fine with about anything except 'cancer' used as a profanity, which is very common in the Netherlands.

@SueJB & @therower , the forum software would change that list to asterisks, so it would be impossible to show you even if we wanted to.

Totally agree, especially regarding the word blood. If I do a finger prick then I should be allowed to talk about having a blood with a y finger. :)

I agree @therower. I am also very surprised at how often this word has NOT been deleted when I did a search of the whole site. My question is though, what is considered to be profanity. I need a definition as used here

Hello friends,
It’s been a while but I’m alive and diabetes has been partially behaving. While work is long hours, I did get to speak to guests and I have had a few nice conversations with them. Bf is starting his new job on monday so I’ve whipped him into sleeping better. I’m excited as he is, it’ll mean we can pool money together for a nicer anniversary next month. Since starting work, I’ve been talking to mum more. I do miss mummy, I hope to be able to see her soon. I also checked that my dad is going to be the big 60 this December. So tiny party

Hi, not sure what is going on with 'profanity' or how it came about, but, when I posted , on here about my favourite Carry on films, Carry on D ( Turpin) a shortened name of Richard, was edited out :wideyed: it spoilt the post.

And you are. Which is why it's not in the profanity filter. The word bloody is one of those words that are regularly used in a non profane context on a forum dealing with diabetes. You're welcome to report the not-literal use of that word any time you see it* and we'll edit it.
As we mods are very much alike to human beings you can't expect us to spot every use of that word as a profanity, even if we have read the post.

* Don't go reporting every old mention of this word. It doesn't do us or the forum any good if we have to edit out words that were written years ago.

Oh my. It looks like I'm going to be an aunt tomorrow or possibly tonight!
Let's hope the baby will wait for a couple more hours so I can drive to my best friend's house myself for the birth, instead of having to wait for a taxi and paying 80 euros or so for the ride.
I should try to get some sleep now, but how? I'm way too excited!

@Antje77 Thank you for this. I raised the issue of the "b" word in a non-literal sense in recent postings not historical.

Thanks @Goonergal I did a search for the incorrect use of the "b" word and was surprised there were so many that have never been challenged. I certainly am not going to waste my time trawling through these. I am concerned about the lack of consistency.

Thanks Sue. We really do rely on reports - unless mods spot rule breaches within their own perusal of the forum, we are dependent on others letting us know of any concerns and hitting the report button is the fastest way to do that. And it’s certainly possible to miss something even if you have read a post, so reports are always appreciated.

Good morning everyone, did you remember to put your clocks back one hour, but I think many things are adjusted automatically ?
Work today, not sure how Iced tea is going to do down, but the weather looks better than yesterday.
Awoke on 4.6, so time for some breakfast :hungry:
Happy Sunday :)
