Just signed up to join this chat, just curious to find out what ages people are, when they got type 1 and how they’re managing?

I’ll start off, i’m currently 18 and had type 1 diabetes since age of 5. I’m on the pump but pushing to get the freestyle libre as it’ll benefit me massively!
Hi andy i was 49 when diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago i have just gone on the omnipod pump after being on injections welcome to the thread ,hope you get your freestyle libre it certainly does help although not always accurate it does give you trends like when bloods are rising or falling

@andyginn hi! 54 6 years ago. On Fiasp and Toujeo and after 2 years self funding, now have the Libre on prescription.
Hi @Fairygodmother good to have you back.
@MeiChanski all sounds complicated, fraught and miserable working conditions. Well done for sticking at it. Start looking for something better over Christmas.

Had type 1 for 37 years now diagnosed at 20 years old. Been on a pump for just under a year and have had a Libre for 18 months. Still get highs and lows, that will never change.

Those diagnosed recently are sooooo lucky (obviously not being diagnosed) but you guys have so much technology to help you out now. In my day when diagnosed, there were no blood testing, just pee on a stick, no pumps no Libre. How we survived in the 80's and early 90's I will never know

morning fairygodmother i have just done my first pod change on my own me nerves were gone still shaking now but will get used to it back to clinic on wednesday then that will be it till after new year :nailbiting:

Hi @karen8967 how are you enjoying the pump. It will take a wee while for you to get your dosages right just persevere with it. I remember changing my Medtronic pod the first time, it took ages. Now I can change this in under 3 minutes.

Hi and welcome! I was 23, diagnosed 21 years ago. Currently using Omnipod pump and Dexcom G6 CGM, which I’ve unofficially linked together to create a pretty good artificial pancreas system.

I couldn't believe it either in your days. I mean the pumps were backpacks and i'm grateful for technology this day.

I was speaking to a couple of family members the other day and funny enough i was the first in the family to get the condition, shortly afterwards my grandma had got type 2 diabetes and she would be better than me at testing her bloods lol. But then my dad was diagnosed with type 2 afterwards as well.

I do panic from time to time about Diabetic Retinopathy as when people have highs their eyes can have an affect and i feel those affects and it makes me so paranoid. I hope me ranging around 7.4% for my hba1c will be okay and will be my highest i ever have in the future.

Nice! And are you getting the sensors via prescription?

There is a Dexcom app for the watch which iuse for the alarms, and I control my pump through Loop, the artificial pancreas app, which you have to build yourself using open source code to suit your hardware. Check out Loopdocs.org for info on the system! You can use it with Libre if you get a little add-on transmitter.

It’s great. And yes, very lucky here in Wales. Libre wasn’t working accurately for me so I got an upgrade a couple of months ago. Where are you based?

I'm North London in Hertfordshire. I used to live with my Mum in Woking, Surrey but moved in with dad as had a football academy asking for me. The diabetes specialists in Woking were excellent with a whole building designated for Diabetics.

I'm now in Lister hospital as Stevenage, well i moved in with my dad 2 and 1/2 years ago. I wasn't seen in 2 years, i had to manually ask for my eye screening as i had concerns, those were cleared up and recently I was just seen for the first time by this specialist last month. They cancelled my appointments 4 times in a row, but i'm on track again to have a blood test this month.

The last 2 years i had no doctor visits, no chase ups and have only suffered from my first diabetic seizure. As i woke up with a low blood sugar and luckily my girlfriend was next to me. Other than that I've had 1 DKA about 6 years ago!

Hello @andyginn32 Welcome to the forums and especially to this thread.

Me? Started off as misdiagnosed T2 4 years ago which was changed to LADA, (slow onset T1 for us older ones!) 2 years ago. Now in my mid-50s.

I did have to giggle at Young Vampire today - for some reason neither of us were quite with it this morning, but it wasn't me who stopped themselves just before injecting into the finger! I did remark I didn't think that wouldn't quite work, somehow, but revenge was exacted as the bloods diary got thrown at me (well, onto the table in front of me as I was giggling) to record the numbers.

For the new to the thread souls
- Young Vampire is a student with T1 whom I support on a daily basis as learning disabilities prevent YV being independent about all the diabetes stuff. Utterly fabulous at the routine, brilliant at making sure I have my "Japes' Meds Bag" with me, often won't move on until I've done my checks/injections, but will never be able to interpret own numbers and act accordingly. Strangely, when I show my number at breaktime to ask if I need a snack, the response is never wrong. There is always much glee and delight at refusing to let me have my snack. Young Vampire? Oh, always licks fingers after a blood test even when I dutifully offer the tissue.

Morning all, so last night was the end of my 2 weeks with the first of my new libres - no itching, no red marks, no nothing - long may it continue! Next one applied and reported this morning as being on 4.4 and blood test confirmed a 4.2, last nights blood test was a 4.something so I'm happy and sitting at 5.3 now.

My mission on Sunday when we have my family xmas get together is to convince my nieces (who I get the libre via on 'friends&family' as she works for Abbott) boyfriend to use one - in her words his control is 'rubbish', I'm sure it's not that bad but I'll be able to show him the benefits of it eating out as they do so quite often - according to Facebook.

The amount of blood i’ve licked from my own finger over the years is probably enough to fill up a bathtub haha. That being said i did have a rough night last night.
