hi all I am a 74 year old type 2 - I inject around 20 units of novarapid and 48Toujeo - I have a breakfast mug of rolled oats with the same mug filled with milk then 4min and 30 secs in the 900w microwave - this does just send my figures crazy but I need a good breakfast but the readings are 25ish - by dinner time the reading would still be around 20 even if I break sweat exercising by bedtime they would have dropped to 11 or 12 and that's before I eat

My OH has not been able to give up his morning porridge but has been able to stabilise his BG numbers by eating mushrooms and an egg fried in olive oil before his oat bran porridge(25g). It seems the order he eats his food makes a big difference. Mushrooms 1st, egg 2nd and porridge 3rd. If he has the same food but eats his porridge 1st, then there is always a big jump in his numbers.

My OH is 71 and has multiple health conditions. It's been a slow progress but he has gradually been able to get his BG lowered.

We managed to reduce the spike caused by porridge by doing a couple of things.

1. Switching to oat bran porridge (oat bran has 46g carbs per 100g, rolled oats 66g per 100g. Almost 1/3 less carbs. Oat bran takes only 2 to 3 mins cooking in a pan. I've never tried making it in the microwave.

2. Cooking the porridge and then chilling it overnight in the fridge. I usually cook enough for a few days and pop it in the fridge and reheat in the microwave. I understand that the cooling overnight creates some resistant starch, which doesn't affect blood glucose numbers the same way.

I hope that might help you bring you numbers down a bit. Let us know how you get on.

Morning everyone

Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day.
At 7.45, I enjoyed two poached eggs, some tiger prawns and slices of avocado garnished with a knob of butter and one or two grindings of black pepper. Water to drink.

At 9.00, I followed up with an espresso plus cream.

B: Two eggs scrambled in butter with a generous dollop of cream, sauteed chestnut mushrooms and a tomato, garnished with flat-leaved parsley and seasoned with one or two grindings of black pepper. Water to swallow tablets, followed by an espresso.

L: Baked sea bass with garlic, thyme, olive oil and a selection of baked, non-starchy vegetables, followed by raspberries and Greek-style full fat yoghurt.

D: Prawn salad made with lettuce, fennel, Romano peppers, celery, cherry tomatoes and salad onions, dressed with an olive oil and balsamic vinegar based vinaigrette and scattered with macadamia nuts roasted in butter.
