I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm not sure where to find the answer? I might have to go back to the drawing board with lo carb eating after having a blow out last night but I am wondering what do you enjoy eating with this lifestyle.

It's still hard getting my head around all the things I can't eat as a diabetic and I will miss them if I give them up but I know I have to for the sake of my health.

I think I mentioned elsewhere that I find it isolating when heading out to dinner and see people eating all sorts that would spike my sugar if I eat it.

Off to have some pistachios which are among the things I like!

I gave up (amongst other things) the four Ps - Pastry, Potatoes, Pizza and Pasta, which used to feature constantly in what I ate.

These days I eat what I used to eat alongside the 4P food - meat, fish, cheese, green veg, which in fairness are what I really enjoy. Yes, in some ways I do miss the foods I don't eat anymore, but I'd rather do that than have the diabetic symptoms back.

You can wake me up for a good steak, bunless burger, piece of salmon or strawberries with cream. Extra dark chocolate, bacon & eggs, various salads (Ceasar, Nicoise, Surf & Turf etc)... If i know I'm going for a brisk walk immediately after, I can have a latte macchiato with coconut milk, if not, I'll settle for a cappuccino. Nuts are lovely, especially pecans.

I'm usually pretty good with foods and restaurants, but that's because I have input in where we go, I guess. It hasn't happened often where I was left out of the deciding process and ended up just having cups of tea to tide me over. I also, more often than not, am with people I am comfortable with and with whom I have an arrangement: all my cookies are theirs to "steal", making me a very welcome lunch partner. (In one establishment, the coffee is served with no biscuit for me, and two on the saucer for my companion: they know me well!). I'll be honest with you though, I'm not to be trusted around a high/afternoon tea. Those can make me rather emotional. Had one at our wedding reception, in the didn't-know-I-was-diabetic-years, and it hurts that I'll never get to do that again. So it isn't all swings and roundabouts, sometimes even after 9 years of this nonsense, it can ache, not being able to partake in some things. But the wretched truth is, if it wasn't for all this, I wouldn't've made it these nine years, either. Would have been pushing up daisies long before this time, because various issues were pretty bad when I was diagnosed. It does put things into perspective some.

Three weeks ago I stayed at a B&B, whose owners also ran a bakery on the ground floor. I had a whole, ginormous freshly baked croissant that morning. I walked 14 kilometers that day, so I did walk it off, and I had left my blood glucose meter in the Netherlands, in our flat 260 kilometers north of where we were. I didn't want to know, for once. I gave myself a free pass, and my goodness, that thing was amazing. Sometimes, you just have to cut yourself a break. Not often, but it still has to be doable. An afternoon tea isn't in the cards for me anymore, i would feel unwell, but that one amazing croissant... Yeah. It can't rain all the time. ;)

Hang in there. It gets easier, for the most part. ;)

The hardest things for me to give up were breakfast cereals and my 'go to comfort food' which was a cheesy baked potato.
But I now LOVE my breakfast (which I don't have before at least 11am) and I have Greek yoghurt with two tablespoons of mixed Chia and Pumpkin seeds added, plus a small amount of either fresh Raspberries, Blueberries or sometimes Strawberries stirred in.
I have replaced the cheesy baked potato with steamed mashed cauliflower with added cheese and it tastes just like mashed potato thankfully.
It's really a case of discovering what you like as replacement dish.

I have two squares of 85% or 90% Lindt dark chocolate, or a small handful of nuts instead of sweets and find this more than satisfying x

love cheese - lipid results for me say should likely avoid
still occassionally grab a wee slice of 50% less fat cheese (than cheddar when read the small print).
found myself snacking on nuts a fair bit recently rather than my old goto packet of crisps / marsbar/ferror rocher) still miss nutella :(

might try some toast with a teaspoon of nutella for breakfast for my birthday next week :)

love mac n cheese sadly it doesnt like me. replaced the mac with cauliflower once a fortnight or so.

diet has changed drastically since the end of jan (when diagnosed) starting to enjoy the likes of greenbeans and having some extra lettuce + cucumber little bit of peppers with burgers rather than with bun+ cheese. mc donalds prob laughed when ordered the philly cheesesteak .... with out the bun lol 67g carbs otherwise sod that :D

Love all cuts of meats, especially lamb & pork, above ground veggies, celeriac, smoked salmon & cream cheese, avocado, love making warm salads with stir fried peppers, mushrooms & onions, eggs in all forms. Full fat Greek yogurt, good quality sausages. M&S do one that’s less than 1g carb per sausage, and I discovered a nice Toulouse sausage from Sainsbury’s last weekend also less than 1g carb per 2 sausages. Some good strong cheeses, the type that make your tongue itch. I love cold cooked veggies too
85% chocolate now & then, I buy low carb bread, rolls, bagels and sometimes pizza bases on line

I cook from scratch low carb & keto curries, casseroles, stir frys, chilli, lasagne,

Off topic, but you might find it's not the cheese. My out of whack lipids on diagnosis pretty much came back in range as soon as I moved to a LCHF type of diet, got on insulin, and mostly normalised my BG.
I can't promise it will be the same for you, but increasing fats (including saturated) has had my lipids in the official ideal range for years. More here to not further derail this thread: https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/th...tion-book-recommendations.201616/post-2674018

I love my very low carb foods! All fresh meats, occasionally bacon, most fish, seafood, eggs, most cheese, full fat Greek yoghurt, nuts, olive oil, butter, leafy green veggies, avocado, a wide variety of leafy salad veggies, cucumber, leeks or spring onions as a substitute for onion, peppers, mushrooms.....lots more I am sure. My one glass of red wine ten days a month (a bottle lasts me five days) or else a tot of brandy or Scotch, 1 oz of 100% cocoa chocolate most days..... I'm sure I've missed some other items. I could go a month without eating the same meal twice if I wanted. I never think about eating stuff that would make me ill. It really slackens its hold on us once we commit to eating for our best health. Honestly it's far more daunting to think about than to actually do.

For me, I now find a lot of the "old foods " make me feel ill after eating them so they are now much easier to avoid than when I first started low-carbing

Example, I'm away at a social weekend in a hotel. There was no low carb options on the menu and didn't think to ask, (thinking I'd be "normal" and ate what the others ate). But today and last evening dreadful stomach pains, wind and digestion so finding it necessary to skip lunch.
Later I'm going to pop out and buy nice cheese and olives to have in case tonight's menu is as bad (2 main dishes in breadcrumbs and fried, 3rd was pasta ) I'd much prefer simple tasty food that doesn't hurt me!

I love meat and fish, (raw when I can afford steak or sashimi), could eat eggs every day, and enjoy most vegetables especially salad.

Luckily I've never been particularly fond of chips/ cakes/ pastry/ biscuits but I do miss crisps. I love pork rind snacks but they don't come in enough flavours to satisfy me.

How did I forget to mention cheese? It's my go to snack when there's no time to cook/ prepare anything else.

I found my wanting crisps disappeared when I added more olive oil or butter to my food, along with salt. The health police got it all wrong when they started beating the drum for low-salt, no-salt and low fat.

Going to try making cheese "crisps" sometime. I've read they can be stored for a few days at room temp, then I can keep them for evenings when I fancy a salty, crunchy treat that I can eat one handed while reading.

I like salt and pepper roasted cashews but have been choking a lot with certain textures of food this year so avoiding whole nuts.
