Could a slow cooker on "warm" double as a sous vide?
( I, too, am banned from more gadgets, but think Santa is bringing me a waffle maker and a single egg sized frying pan, because I asked nicely and have been good)

The A2 starts in Central London and runs south east through Kent, becoming the M2 for a while but then becomes A2 again for Canterbury down to Dover. Was much travelled in in my youth on way to camping holidays in Europe.
But its nothing to do with my username. I started as MrsA but lost the password and had to sign up again, so nothing as exotic as a highway to adventure, sorry

It was the A2 all the way when we lived in Canterbury and it made its way through all the villages on the way. I think I was still a teenager when they built the M2 sections. It didn't seem to help much with the traffic flow through Canterbury though. It was always pretty busy through the town. I gather it's much worse now around the town but think it may be pedestrianised actually in the town these days.

Thanks. Oddly, I must have travelled along that road hundreds of times going to/returning from cricket and rugby. I never really notice road numbers just where I need to get for meeting time. Thanks for quite a nice reminder. @DJC3 ya can't block mods

That depends what temperature the slow cooker achieves. Some of the SV cooks are ate really quite low temperatures, others higher.

You'd have to fill your slow cooker with an appropriate amount of liquid, start it off, then test the temperature over several hours.

My SV wand (and I think the others too) has an accurate thermometer/thermostat (gradients of 0.1c), which kicks in as required, but also cuts out if the temperature needs to be lowered.

I usually start the bath with hot tap water, or hot tap, plus a little from the kettle, just to shorten the time it takes to reach temperature.

I've spent the afternoon making a Christmas Pie - based, quite loosely on a Yorkshire Christmas Pye - a very old recipe which uses various kinds of game in a pie with herbs and spices. I just liked the idea of doing it. In all these years of cooking and baking, I've never made hot water crust pastry. Thought about it, but thought it would be a difficult pastry to make. So, today was the day. The pastry looks absolutely fine and fairly appetising. The filling is skinned duck breast, skinned chicken breast, turkey breast steaks, fatty bacon and pork sausage meat. I also added some cranberries and sour cherries. The original is only meat, no veg and no sausage meat. I will top it up with chicken stock (jellied) tomorrow, as if it were a pork pie (also not in the original). I just reached the stage when I had to do it. Shan't eat it, of course, although once it is cut, I might have some of the filling. Something else for No 2 son's larder. He can put it in his freezer and use it for supper on Christmas day, or Boxing day. The pastry, in fact, was very easy to make, but difficult to handle once it cooled down. It had to be worked quickly to keep it pliable. Smells good!

It wasn't good. Wrong spices for me. No 2 son came in with the mail and decided to try it then and there. I had a little of the filling and a small bit of pastry. I liked the pastry. It was very good. The spices I used in the filling - nutmeg, mace and cloves, were just not right for me. I would have been better to have used ginger and more cranberries; perhaps more fatty meat like pork and some shallots. I will try again, but next time I will make it as a terrine and leave out the pastry - too much of a temptation. My son had to be obliged to take it away to save me! He'll cut it into individual portions and freeze it for use for lunches as and when required. I knew he wouldn't let me down.

Getting rid of a lovely old table out of the loft. It's solid oak, made in the 1930's and a very clever design which allows the whole top to remain stable when the leaves are pulled out - they rise, magically, from the centre line. DIL has decided that their round dining table takes up too much space and is too unstable (their dining room is now combined with the sitting room since the laundry took over the dining room). So my old rectangular one fits the bill - and it relieves our loft of some of the weight and volume it holds. Being oak, the table is very heavy. Trouble is, now it is sitting in the hall waiting for some attention with wood soap and polish. Now I'm just left with one spare table in the loft - an oak refectory table that Neil brought home with him when he moved back in. This house is cluttered with chairs, tables, sideboards, sofas and arm chairs. Too, too much. But some of them are antiques and I am lothe to get rid of them. One of the sideboards, Neil and I bought in a charity shop - just because it was so strikingly awful that we couldn't resist! Neil says he'll renovate it one day - the wood is very good quality, but the design!!!

@shelley262 Thanks for the steer to The Low Carb Company, Delivery arrived on time, in date and very well packaged. 5 ready meal bundle - all in the freezer. Possibly for travelling next year to see new granddaughter in S'oton; 1 each of seeded bloomer and sliced bread (for freezing in portions) plus some of their flour for "experiments" I will try one or both breads today now I have some benchmarks from both Skinnybread and the mouldy guys.

Just saw an item on TV about black garlic. I've never seen or used it, but I do love garlic. So I've ordered some from Amazon. It should arrive next Tuesday. Sounds really good. Not cheap, of course but, as long as I don't use it as sweets, it should be worth it.

Garlic is super easy to grow, Ann, so might be worth planting a couple of cloves? They like to grow in the cold weather. I planted some "ordinary" a few weeks ago and it's going great guns

I gave up on growing garlic after a few attempts - but that was some years ago now. I was thinking of trying again. Might have another go and see how we do this time. (Didn't have much success with onions either.)

Just received in the post, some plants for potting up and out - a Chinese mulberry, a Mini kiwi (doubtful about that, but we can try), a Service tree/sorbus (sorbus does well here) and a free gift, white Christmas box (looks pretty on the flyer).

Hey @Chook great to hear from you. I am doing fine thanks - I got made redundant from my office job because of all this covid carry on but after doing only office work for over 35 years I have landed myself a job in retail - a change for me (as there is absolutely nothing on the office front at the moment) I am just going with the flow ... nothing else for it. And preparing now for Christmas. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas ... it has been very cold and snowy here today - I am even looking forward to the forecast for rain tomorrow - anything but snow - especially when I have to go out in it - it has been great working local today as I didn't have to drive in it.

@zauberflote very kindly started this general chat thread for us all - thanks again Mrs - not a low carb chat just an anything chat really - have a look around and please join us and fill us in, in what you have been up to - I for one would be very interested in what you are eating these days to achieve your amazing FBGs you have achieved on the other thread. Looking forward to you catching up with us all - only if you want to - please do x

Hello, thank you for tagging me... so this is where you are all chatting - I've missed posting. :)

@Mrs T 123 - I'm sorry to hear about your redundancy but congratulations on your new job - are you enjoying it?

I'm still on the 800 calorie a day diet (inspired by the Newcastle diet and Michael Mosley 's Fast 800 diet). It's boring but is working - weight down 2 stones and FBGs mainly in the 5s. Apart from sticking to 800 calories I've also moved my main meal back to 4-4.30pm and don't eat after that. Oh, and I've given up alcohol (don't know how long that will last!!)

I'm also.preparing for Christmas - at the moment it will be just me and Mr C for dinner but one of our neighbours has bought a fire pit thingy and a canopy and has invited us round for some outdoor booze.

I finally did get my hospital appointment (third time lucky) and the (very strange) consultant diagnosed me with fibromyalgia, polyarticular osteoarthritis and degenerative spine disease - weirdly since that appointment I have been feeling quite a bit better!!

Chook the 800 Cals diet seems to be working wonders for you - fantastic weight loss and great FBGs too. I think you are definitely onto something with eating earlier. @ziggy_w I know does the same. I try to, but feel guilty if I’m eating before Paul gets in from work.
I love the idea of fire pit and booze with neighbours at Christmas - worth waiting to have a drink for.
Hugs for all those conditions you’ve just been diagnosed with - crikey! Glad you’re feeling better now though.

Its easier for me, the only time we have meals together is on his days off (Friday and Saturday). I am having three days off it over Christmas and two days off over New Year's - mainly due to 'traditional' meals we have each year.

My main worry is what happens at the end. I don't for one minute think that I will be free of diabetes but I don't want my FBGs back up in the 10s, 11s and 12s - I hated that feeling.

About the things i was diagnosed with - TBH its a relief to know what it all is.

Hi Chook, lovely to see you. You have been missed.

Related to your new diagnosis, are they going to treat you in any way?

Edited to add, I too have had an arthritis diagnosis, although mine seems to be considered osteo over multiple joint. Typically for me, I'm not presenting typically.

No **** Sherlock!

Did they talk about Capsicaine cream with you?

Hi @Chook lovely to see you back. Have missed your posts. Sounds like the 800 cal thing is really working.

I also eat early - ideally between 4 and 5.30 depending on work. Failed big time tonight though. Got distracted and food is still in the air fryer.

The bread was unexceptional in taste. It didn't "get in the way" of the butter if that makes sense. We like President butter and I find LC bread is a often a poor carrier and bulking agent. This is soft, more substantial than skinnybread and, for me, less problematic than SLC - no eggs or palm oil:
Ingredients "Water, Low-Carb Flour (Golden Linseed, Oat Fibre, Psyllium Husk, Vital Wheat Gluten, Salt), Olive Oil, Yeast, Salt. We bought some of their flour so we had the correct proportions. The Food Fairy is not sure about attempting to bake bread - she makes her own and is a good baker. I need to run the comparative costs through a spreadsheet.
