What The Deference Between Metformin & Diamicron ?

Good morning, gentlemen
As same friends here know I use Diamicron and metformin as I know Diamicron for force The pancreas to produce more insulin
my question is

If i right it does mean that I suffer from insulin deficiency( Knowing that there is no difference even if I did not use it)
I know that the problem is insulin resistance, not the lack of insulin

2 What is the function of metformin

Metformin decreases insulin resistance, reduces glucose production by the liver, reduces appetite.

Low insulin production and normal insulin production with high insulin resistance have the same effect - not enough insulin in the blood to force glucose out of the blood.

Another thing to keep in mind is the "progression" used by doctors when treating Type 2 diabetes. The first drug is often Metformin. If they want to add a second, stronger drug they often go to Diamicron (or Gliclazide, which I think is the same drug).

So it works the same in the other direction. When reducing drugs, they would probably remove the Diamicron first. The last drug to be removed would be Metformin.

(This is my understanding from reading information on this website. I have never taken these drugs so it would need to be confirmed by someone who has direct experience of the process.)

I don't know much about this because I am not taking diabetes drugs, but I hope other posters can relate their experience of removing Diamicron (Gliclazide class). Personally, if I were taking that drug, removing it is something I would only do with the advice of my doctor.

I agree with @Grateful, I do want to reduce my medications for Diabetes and BP but wouldn’t do it without consulting my Dr first.

Have you discussed it with your doctor? I wouldn't play around with my medication without discussing it first.

I do change the amount of Gliclazide I take, because when I have very tight control of my carbs and my BS gets into the 5s, then the Gliclazide can push me too low and I have had a hypo. It's very rare for me though, as I can be under 50g of carbs for a while and then I go and blow it in self-destruct mode!

@hichamgsm: I would listen to @RosieLKH who has personal experience with the complexities of "managing" Diamicron/Gliclazide.

Also, but this is just my feeling rather than a researched fact, I suspect that a one-day "experiment" may not provide useful information anyway.

I too hope you can lower the drugs or eliminate them. But to me that is not the whole story.

I am going to sound a bit repetitious, but here goes. My doctor put me on a no-drug treatment, but he made it clear that if my HbA1c had been high (and your September 29 test result, given in another thread, was high) he would want to put me on drugs, at least until the HbA1c was down to much lower levels.

At a later meeting, I asked him whether it would be necessary to put me on drugs later in my life, if the disease were indeed "progressive" as diabetes is often described.

"Drugs are good, when you need them." That was his answer.

So I do not think there is a simple equation such as no-drug=good, or drugs=bad.

Just my own "2 cents" as they say here in America.

Removing diamicron / gliclizide for a day will not give you a good idea of what impact the drug is having on your blood sugars as the drug stays in your system for longer than a day
I understand the desire to be drug free but the most important thing is to be free of high blood sugars
