What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

I never have had any time for fireworks or bonifres. Nothing "bon" about them as far as I was concerned. Even less so when I learned what Guy Fawkes night was all about when I was about 8 or 9. I suppose my initial dislike was taken from my father who hated the whole thing. I'm afraid that some of my ancestors, John, were ones who had people burned at the stake, and the one who caused the downfall of the Catesbys, Percy and Tresham. I can only apologise for that. However, some of my family tree also include the Tudors - before they became the royal Tudors - who had some of my other ancestors burned at the stake as Lollards, just a bit before the Reformation when the Tudors (some of them) started to hold the same kind of beliefs. It was all a very confused time and dangerous for anyone who held novel views on religion - or even traditional ones for some of the time. With my, more 20th century, view of the world, I can't comprehend how people back then thought and felt or why they thought they could, or should, control other people's beliefs.

Sadly, it was not only a 15th century attitude and still persists, even in this land, never mind in the Middle East and elsewhere. At least in Britain nobody can take violent action against "infidels" of what ever faith, without coming to grief at the hands of the law. They can still, and do, shun what they consider to be unbelievers though - certainly on this Island and probably in other places as well. DIL has been barred from working in certain places as a supply teacher/classroom assistant because she once joined a strict evangelist church but left when she realised that they were - to her mind - unChristian with no thought of Christian charity or forgiveness in their minds. Now those who have some influence will not allow her to be employed if they can prevent it. As far as they are concerned she is unforgivable and a "fallen woman" and unfit to teach children. Pretty sure that if it was still legal to burn heretics, she would be on the list. But then, I daresay I would as well.

Hug for your DIL @Annb. After what has been said by at least one candidate in both the US GE and the Tory leadership election the idea that nobody can take violent action against infidels in contemporary society is quite quaint and does you justice. We here needed to release prisoners to accommodate those willing to burn men women and children to death just earlier this year. There is something quite unpleasant about both the GOP and Tories allowing non stereotypical members to take the lead in uttering their most deeply unacceptable opinions so that when it all goes badly they can celebrate their inclusivity whilst having a ready made plausible deniability. Good job this lady can puncture that for the Tories. Over the pond one can already see people positioning themselves in the event of a Trump defeat. The attached shows how complicit many in the GOP have been just as so many in the Tory party here have.

I've never thought that what was on the outside of a person (age, skin, clothing, gender etc) were very important. It's the real person inside that outer casing that is important. I don't care that Ms Badenoch is of a different ethnic origin to me, or that she is female, and think it is probably somewhat offensive and disparaging to celebrate that. But what and who is she really? That is important. Who is the real Kemi Badenoch? Come to that, who is the real Donald Trump? What is inside that outer casing?

Once again your views do you great credit but as is so often the case the Mr, Mrs, Ms, however they self-define in the background have used him and her to promote distasteful (downright evil?) views knowing their gender/skin colour/ issues offer a layer of protection which allows those views to be given an airing in public. The outer casing is a kind of Trojan horse. The journalist who called out Badenoch could do so whereas a white male couldn't.

7.0 this manic Monday.

I'm feeling frustrated at the moment, and I'm probably in a depressive state.
It has been a hard couple of days of demands on my brain.

I have asked family to help a bit more.
I'm just not getting enough sleep or rest.

I apologise for not being here more lately and not reading the thread.
I will catch up.

IMHO,
The tories seem to favour someone who has battled the 'norm' for a top pisition.
And ms Badenough had done extremely well, for a party known to be racist and misogynistic.
But as I have said before, the leader is just 'the face' of the party.
You have to look behind 'the face', for example, who she is married to. Who funds her rise, her backers and the big businesses that will be knocking on her door?

Hopefully they will never be back in power in my life again!
Haven't they done enough damage?

Royal family taking taxpayers money indirectly as rent!
Totally not surprised.
And not paying the tax that everyone else has to.
Why?

Art bit is really good @dunelm
It feels to me that you have your own style with these paintings. I love them very much.

Hugs for JKP @ianpspurs

Thank you on her behalf @gennepher and thank you for sharing the video and creative. I feel guilty for only giving a like as I know your artistic skills are exemplary and deep down I'm certain the creative has depths and nuances I ought to appreciate more - almost feels as though a part of me was left behind with the placenta. I'm so sorry you cast your pearls among this swine - oink is all I can say. Do forgive me, I will strive to be a better, more deserving audience. @dunelm is obviously going to draw my attention to all kinds of ways I should have appreciated the work more just to add to my feelings of inadequacy and shame. I'mma having more pig nuts as I type, comfort eating. That's me to a tee

Sad for your DIL and even sadder that such a group of people responsible can get away with it. Perhaps they could be rounded up and send to new lands. Soay looks promising.

I sincerely hope that family step up to the mark and give you what I think is some badly needed support.

What a smashing gift to send to your pen friend. Lovely. @ianpspurs - there are three types of people in the world; those who know what they like, those who don’t and art critics.

Yes, but some of us lower orders need to be told what we like by people such as the late Brian Sewell in much the same way our palates need educating by tv chefs/judges (basically supersize the seasoning and sugar so you haven't a clue what you are eating) and especially wine critics. How else would we simple folk ever know what we must like? You appear to be far too Bohemian, running around developing your own tastes. I fear for you should Kemi outlast Osborne's prediction and even be there in two years never mind win an election.

Brian Sewell - sadly missed. I loved his Grand Tour
