63.5 year old boy with toy for trimming hedges and banks. Inordinately happy doing that type of job especially compared to the dire homus domesticus nonsense. What's it doing in this thread? By far my favourite and probably most effective way of controlling bg - do useful things outdoors (don't include walking personally) . Gym mimics them but never quite the same for me. (wow, I look so much like my dad in that picture)

Me neither. Yard work is best exercise there is -- next to barn work. ;)

Good morning all. Had a wonderful night out, involved some great food, albeit small portions, and some red wine. (Blood sugars stayed below 5.3 at all times.) It did get a bit chilly later on, but overall a grand evening.

Fbg was 4.8 this morning.

@Dawnmc71, @Shas3 and @Veronica Wright -- Welcome to thread. Great that you have decided to join.
@Dawnmc71 -- 4.3 isn't really too low, but might feel uncomfortable if you are not yet used to lots of readings in the fours. In a few weeks, you probably won't even notice a reading in this range any more. Agree with others that on metformin alone, you are unlikely to experience any real hypos. When you have your appointment, you might also want to bring along your meter, so that your GP can see the impact your recent dietary changes have had on your blood sugar levels.
@PenguinMum -- Hugs that such a wonderful evening was followed by an uncomfortable night with a tummy ache. Hope you feel better now.
@Goacher55 -- Hope your cold gets better soon.
@jjraak -- Sounds as if you are having a ball in Goa. Glad you are enjoying your vacation. Keep the reports coming. I'm enjoying them.
@JohnEGreen -- Hugs for the high blood sugars following the meal, but also impressed by how well your body did in bringing them down quickly.
@dogslife -- Sorry to read about your back pain, stress and disappointment with the last blood test. Constant pain and stress can definitely impact your readings. Maybe you can ask for another three months to try to bring your levels down? I am not sure if I remember, but did you ever have a C-peptide test? If insulin levels are in the normal range, it should be possible to bring readings down once your back is less painful and stress subsides.

Have a great weekend, folks.

Thanks

Thanks, Bubbsie. The pain from my slipped disc is not as debilitating as it was but I have a lot of pain elsewhere, some of which I think is caused by my body's reaction to being constantly stressed/ exhausted. Every day has new challenges mostly related to caring for my almost 90 year old mum with Altzhiemer's and being advocate to my mum's 87 year old sister. I'm usually pretty good at dealing with challenges/ thinking on my feet etc but when there is emotion involved/ no chance of improving things no matter what I do/ lots of frustrating phone calls trying to get things organised it can sometimes seem too much. My aqua aerobics was a good stress reliever but had to give that up for now. Thanks again for replying.:)

To a degree, I have been there, done that, bad back and all. Without the help of home health-care aides I don't know how I would have managed, plus being like a prisoner in the house never able to get out and go anywhere for a break. I am sorry you are in that situation. Hug.

Looks like I will be spending another day here as well ... same state of mind.

Morning All. Yes its little old me at silly o clock! Bad night on the sofa with nausea and digestive issues which lasted 5 hrs. It was yesterdays theme. Went out to Thai restaurant with friends last night. Chose a stir fry main but the starter platter wasnt great for me. Think might need to increase my enzymes. Anyway at 0500 I am 5.6. Will test again at 0800 as usual.
Happy Saturday everyone. Stay well, stay safe.
@jjraak how are you getting on with the food in Goa?
Hope you are feeling better now @PenguinMum

REUTERS:
HEALTH DESK : Reports coming from India that the Mediterranean diet may have competition

Diabetic maverick "JJ Raak" has flown halfway across the globe to test the "Tourist India" diet

First reports coming in suggest it may of large benefits.

Typical meals have been tandoori chicken, veg..half nan bread .one large Heineken
Half a dozen bloody Mary's, prawns in garlic, with chicken satay sauce, two vodka diet cokes..pre 5.5...post 6.1....

JJ reports only I'll effect seems to a propensity to laugh, dance and generally misbehave in a way totally unbecoming of his age .

Asked when experiment will end,

with a wink and a cheeky grin, JJ responded that more time will certainly be needed to fully appreciate benefits...chin,chin. ;) "
We are also feeling the effects of those bloody marys back here at the hub. Keep on drinking, we are loving it.

6.4 today. Tomorrow I’m running 31miles (50km) in a trail race from Manchester to Sowerby Bridge. The training has been brutal but I’m ready - it’s my first ever marathon.
I’ll report back tomorrow afternoon.
Hope you are all well.
Very best of luck to you.

Very nice toy, you could give someone a haircut from an upstairs window with that.

Having just 2 weeks of metformin left and 4 weeks to school holidays I've been amazed how fast my bg has dropped. By tues I had readings 5.5 /5.3 all day, but these are still dropping. Last night both before and 2 hrs after food I got 4.3(!!!) and so I didnt take any metformin. Now my concern is is that too low? I didn't feel great, but I know in the first couple of weeks keto I might not.

Any advice? Am I at risk of hypo on low carb?

4.3 is normal blood glucose. 4.0 and above is normal blood glucose. Unlike Type 1s, most of us with Type 2 don't get hypos because we still produce some insulin. The exception is the Type 2s who take insulin or insulin producing drugs (NOT metformin) which need reduction because of low carb eating. Most Type 2s don't have to worry about a reading of 4.3. I would not correct 4.3 but I if I was fasting. I would stop an extended fast with that reading. (I keep my blood glucose 4.0 and above, within the normal range.)

Being on metformin and low carb/keto doesn't put you at risk for hypos (unlike insulin or some meds that produce insulin). Metformin doesn't cause you beta cells to produce more insulin, instead prevents the liver from making excess glucose and makes your muscle and fat cells more sensitive to your own insulin.

You may get some false hypos where you have the symptoms of a hypo but blood glucose in the normal range (4.0 mmol/L and above) - always check if you think you have a hypo. Some Type 2s get false hypos when their numbers first start to come down because their body has become used to higher numbers. Unlike real hypos, these are not dangerous and should NOT be corrected and they usually go away in a couple of weeks as your body adjusts to newer, normal numbers..
