ALL I got an email in my inbox saying "this is a request to change your password to diabetes.co.uk. If you did not request this, please ignore" or words to that effect. As I'd been out of the house 3 days in a row in Milton Keynes and I'd got no internet access as I'd lost my blackberry. That is all.

Such a weird and petty thing to do!

Arr, thats much clearer now, all this means is that someone tried and failed to log in as you, many people use things like pets names and then along comes the usual "Pets" Threads asking what pets people have and all and sundry post the names of their pets thus giving away their passwords

Marty, if I was you, just to be on the safe side I would change my password, just in case a successful attempt was made and they got it right, however unlikely that might be. All they could do if someone hacks your account is make posts in your name which although is annoying can do no real damage except perhaps upset a few people.

I doubt that the mods can do anything as they will not be able to see who has tried to access your account, possibly who ever is in charge of the data base might be able to but it will probably be too much trouble and effort, just change your password to be on the safe side

Never use pets names.
Never use birthdays.
Never use anything that can be connected to you.
Always try to mix letters and numbers.
Best to mix UPPER and lower case letters if allowable, ie Gl4sSB0tTLe Notice the a sustituted for a 4 and the o substituted to a 0 (zero) all you have to remember is glass bottle but you have mixed up upper and lower case and used letters and numbers.

Obviously dont use "Gl4sSB0tTLe"

ps. not trying to teach granny to such eggs here, but its worth posting for anyone who is not that security concious :)

As you say Hale, but there are some proper idiots about mate. Almost certainly a kiddy who thinks its funny to post abuse using someone elses name

Happens quite a lot on Facebook and the like, especially as people have it installed on phones as an App and don't log out which leaves you open if you're at the pub with your mates and go to the toilet and leave your phone on the table! not a good idea!

No one could ever crack my passwords. That phrase you concocted, I've heard that before somewhere. ;) along with many hands make light work and too many cooks spoil the broth. Save yourself time thinking by purchasing a book of parables, lol. ;)

Hi I know nothing about forums(fora) how do you know someone is trying to hack into your account and is it dangerous could it cause a virus on your computer?
CAROL
Thankfully even if your forum account is compromised, this won't grant hackers access to your entire PC unless the root cause of the compromise was malware on your system. I recommend that everyone keep a firewall running and run regular virus scans with Microsoft Security Essentials.

I think as long as your password is still the same and no one else has access to your e-mail address, it's safe to ignore the request. I'm not sure what e-mail address provider you use, but if you use GMail it might be worth enabling two-step verification as it's one of the most effective security settings available.

Why would anyone want to hack into an account on a Diabetes forum? What's the worst they could do???

I guess upset a few members with some childish smutty comments but that's about it really...it's not as if we keep our money here luckily!

Ok, I guess nothing is impossible.

I too like Spike Milligan.

"A remarkable bird is the pelican,

Whose bill can hold more than his belly can.

He can hold in his beak, enough fish for a week,

But I'm hanged if I know how the hell he can"

;)

I'm pleased to hear it.

The whole notion of creeping about like that is completely warped.

One late note on passwords
http://xkcd.com/936/

Lesson - four common words in a phrase such as "redlightbigfight" are harder to crack and easier to remember than a fancy substitution.

Through 20 years of effort we've successfully trained everyone to use passwords that are hard for humans to remember but easy for computers to guess.

Cheers

I know who it is. They keep contacting me as a friend, so I won't think it it's them! They work in IT and are as thick as 5hit! Anyone wanting their name PM me. They are blocked from me on this site ;)

You need to contact admin about this, report the perpetrator, this member needs dealing with, its not fair that you are caused such distress. I hope this gets sorted soon.

I agree with Whitby, this person should be reported and dealt with. Sorry this happened to you Mart. It's difficult to understand the mind set behind this type of petty but malicious behaviour. A pathetic individual thinking they are very clever.

They will be banned won't they? as I feel rather spooked about some hacker still being amongst us especially if it's someone I interact with.
