Hi there, my name is liv and I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in March 2014 so I've had it just over 2 years! I was put on novo rapid and levermir insulin, but around August 2015 I took my self off my insulin as I started to feel really ill and depressed. I didn't take any form of medication at all for about 6 months and the doctors didn't understand why I was going through DKA! But I've just been put on gliclazide, which I understand is adrift used for type 2! But the doctors won't tell me anything they are keeping it all secret so I don't know what type I have or whether this medication is going to work! Does anyone know anything?

Hi Liv and welcome to the forum - how have your blood glucose readings been ? Type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent, as stated by my nurse without it we die, as you have managed so long without it suggests that you were misdiagnosed and could be type 2, however as i'm not medical specialist I cannot advise you on the nature of your condition, except please push your team to discover what has been going on, they will be checking your bloods so should be able to offer you an explanation, good luck, it sounds like you have been through a difficult time,so having an answer from your doctors is vital.

They've been fluctuating from the lowest of 4.3 and 16.4 but most days is around 10/12 without medication, which is better than what my blood was when I was first diagnosed (33.2mmol)! I have been to 2 different hospitals trying to get answers and they just say well if we had to bet on it you would be type 1 but then I don't understand it becaus everything they say is condradictive! Thankyou so much for the support!

Have you had a GAD test? Have you had a c-peptide test? Are the people guessing at your type endocrinologists? What's your weight like? What kind of thing do you eat? What sort/how much physical activity do you do?

If you don't understand what your doctors are saying you need to tell them that so they can explain it again. If you can answer some of the above I'm sure some on the forum will be able to help with further questions for you to put to your doctors so you can understand what's going on.

Hi. Yes, ask for the GAD and c-peptide. It sounds like you may be a LADA with a failing pancreas. If so Gliclazide will help for a while but insulin would be needed long-term. It's not usual for insulin to cause depression but obviously having to use it may cause you to feel depressed and you may need counselling for that.

Yup yup yup. All important questions. T1 gets over looked far too often. I almost died because of that. Request GAD and c peptide and you will have your answers. Actually insist. We need to taken our health in our own hands these days
