What have you eaten today? (Low carb forum)

I hope you didn’t pull the batter off! I’ve been thinking about that for when we go over to see Dad. Mmmm lovely fish and chips, my favourite.
You can have fish and chips. It's another of my oddities. I hated fish n chips but started longing for it when I went low carb.
I use cod loin and a LC crumb which is a mix of Almond flour, parmesan, sesame seeds, seasoning and it can sometimes have lemon zest/parsley in it. I'm not keen on batter but here's a link to a LC tempura batter recipe from my CMT

https://www.copymethat.com/r/hzAMkUp/low-carb-tempura-batter/

Chips? Celeriac, aubergine, zucchini or my current favourite mixed veggie chips. Halloumi chips as well. I also knock together the DD curry tartare sauce. Very easy, Hellmans mayo, chopped pickled cucumber and medium curry powder or paste.

Bed 7.1 FBG 6.8. still got a surge although not as bad and signs of returning to normality. Good day at school as well - both boys got Certificates for achieving their values. Went OMAD again.
B. TAG with ADOC
L. Just water
D. Had to satisfy this craving for mint so had another lamb kebab with lettuce, tomato and 1/2 avocado. Mint sauce of course! 2 squares G&B mint chocolate.
Yet another LC creme brulee and 3 strawberries.
Pre dinner I was down to 4.9 - haven't seen that in a while.

May be the wrong thread but folk on here are knowledgeable. Can Metformin suddenly cause digestive system issues after a few years - 4 in my case? I have reduced from 2 to 1 for about a year but the recent problems seem to coincide with trying to eat a higher fat ratio. Only time I have previously had issues was when I ate much fattier food e.g wagyu burgers.
Edit: Dr Google suggests it is rare but can happen - anyone else heard of or suffered from this?

Yes it can. I had some terrible repercussions when taking Met while fasting and, to a lesser extent, when I attempted carnivore. I don't know if they've changed it but there used to be a warning on the Patient Information Leaflet against taking Met when on a low calorie diet and, of course, that would apply if you are struggling to eat for any reason.

Thanks @Chook. That makes sense to me. Sudden case of upset tummy caused me to not eat then be very careful about what I ate for a few days but I still took my 1 metformin. Stats suggest I have averaged about 1400 cals per day over 2 weeks and my BMR is about 1850 cals - all makes sense.

I might sneakily revert back to restricting veg again because my FBGs are very slowly rising daily. Just going up 0.1 - 0.2 each day but it is a steady daily rise over the last couple of weeks. (And this is on top of my normal Dawn Phenomenon.) :shifty: :shifty:

Today...

Breakfast: Egg mayonnaise on crispbread
Lunch: Brie with a few Brazil nuts
Dinner: Lamb chops with broccoli and mangetout
Drinks: BDC, SAW

Dawn phenomenon - just a couple of things that work for me:
1. A bit of cheese first thing in the morning to help drag it back after testing. I did this for about a year and then, after a chat with a friend, tried this-

2. A small bit of carbs at about 9pm to give all internal players something to play with - I use one or two low carb home made crackers, each about 2 inches square, with a bit of cream cheese (or just on their own).

Good luck with whatever works for you.

Patient info leaflet on Metformin always says something like ‘not to be taken while fasting’, so I would strongly advise people to consider it while intake is disrupted, either intentionally (IF) or unintentionally (gut rot).

Sorry you’ve been off colour @ianpspurs

Do you cook the cod loin in the air fryer? So far I’ve only used it for chicken but I’m looking forward to trying other stuff in it.

@Brunneria and @ anyone else who brews kefir - is there anything else you can do with the kefir or grains? Especially the grains. They are multiplying at an alarming rate and its costing me a small fortune in organic whole milk. (At this rate they'll take over the World by Christmas.)

No, I fry it. It may work in the air fryer without the paddle but the paddle would destroy the fish. Just in a frying pan - not deep fat. I really like that DD curry tartare sauce too (almost as much as my sudden desire for mint sauce).

Thanks for mensh and good wishes. I haven't had the trots since starting all this so it has been a learning process. I have had no problems while fasting but lesson learned. I am stopping taking metformin and carefully upping calories for a while.

Evening all. Meaty May continues.

Lunch - on the run - M&S Serrano ham and manchego cheese rollitos and a bag of their pork crackling.

Dinner - slow cooked brisket. Found a nice fatty piece. The juices were to die for - cooked in the leftovers from last night, which in turn involved the leftover juices from a previous meal.

@Chook sorry about the DP issues - come join us for Meaty May?

It makes great crispy kale.

Ooh I love kale crisps. How long do you put them in for?

I don’t have a paddle in mine ( it’s just a cheapo Lidl one). I wonder if that ‘crumb’ would crip up in the airfryer, or would just go hard.

I’ll look up the tartare sauce for next time we have cod. It does sound good. Tonight it’s sea bass though and I think lemon butter goes well with that.

You could give them away - a tablespoon of them in a bit of milk and double wrapped in little sealed plastic bags (the ones that pinch together) and they will last a couple of days in the post. The recipient then needs to stick them in fresh milk and wait till they overcome their jet lag (so to speak). I would take some and happily pay for them and delivery.
Have a look here: http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~dna/sharing-kefir-grains.htm

Alternative would be to dry them out and freeze them, see here: https://happykombucha.co.uk/blogs/happykombucha-1/6895548-drying-and-freezing-kefir
