When I had my last meal of the day, about 3 pm, it included ready to eat salmon. And this usually has the effect of reducing my blood sugars.
But immediately after I ate it I heated up (my body heated up, and sweat began pouring off my face) as though my blood sugars had risen. And I didn’t feel too good. So had a nap and got up at 6pm. I still didn’t feel good. I felt as though I had eaten a lot of sugar. But I hadn’t had any. I checked my blood sugars. They were 10. They are normally about 6.1 at 6pm. And this is what had been projected from the One Drop app from me entering the food I had eaten.
I am upset because I don’t know what has happened here. Then I realised the ready to eat salmon was from a different shop I normally buy it from. So I compared data between this new salmon to my usual salmon. The new salmon was 3 carbs for the same quantity as opposed to my regular salmon which was 1 carb for the same quantity.
Why the difference? No extra ingredients in the new salmon. But it still didn’t break my carb allowance for the day which was about 20 carbs.
The new salmon was apple smoked, but my regular salmon wasn’t.
So, I thought, oh well it will go back down if it’s own accord. I went to bed at 7pm (I usually go to bed between 7 and 9 pm because I am generally an early riser). I still didn’t feel too good.
Woke up just now at 11 pm. I thought I would check blood sugars. It was 10.5. I am thinking this is not possible. I do have a back up blood sugar monitor of a different brand (but it uses quite expensive strips), and this one came up as 9.7.
I do not understand why my blood sugar is not going down. So I went in the kitchen and cut a few small slices of hard cheese and got a few cashew nuts.
I will test again next time I wake up.
My blood sugar readings have been in range for more than 10 days now, always under 7.5 and usually in the 6’s.
Was it this new apple smoked salmon from a different shop that was the cause of this blood sugar rise? Was there some unknown sugars in it that weren’t on the label. Or did my body have a blip?
Not happy with this.
Okay this is my earlier post about 11pm last night because I’d had a fright when my blood sugars had stayed up high for about 8 hours after having some ready to eat apple smoked salmon.
This next bit is more or less my reply to
@SaskiaKC at 2:30am (I am trying to keep a continuity here so someone else can follow the whole episode in one post, if they are interested)
“But the apple smoking didn’t add anything special to the salmon in my opinion.
I have just woken up at 2:30 am
Taken a reading. It is now a 7 at 2:30 am. The cheese and nuts I had a few hours earlier has obviously lowered the blood sugar numbers. But it wasn’t going down by itself.
This is still a little high for 2:30 am because it is usually a 5.6 to a 6.1 for 2:30 am time of day.
But I am glad it has come down. I admit I was beginning to panic. I had gone into panic stations because I was worried my body’d had a blip.”
Okay. It’s now this morning, Monday morning, at 6am when I took my next reading. So my fbg at 6am is 7.5. It seems pretty much normal now. But I still think it is a little high. Checking back on my One Drop app my fbg seems to have been mostly in the late 6’s.
So, for some reason, it appears, this brand of apple smoked ready to eat salmon raised my blood sugars alarmingly, but what frightened me was my blood sugars did not go back down of their own accord. This particular brand of apple smoked ready to eat salmon had 3 carbs as opposed to 1 carb of my regular ready to eat salmon, for the same weight. So, the carbs in themselves are not such a big deal, but something in that brand of salmon really upset my blood sugars, and raised them.
I had planned on going out for a treat for me today and having a roast dinner (minus the roast spuds and Yorkshire pud), but I am not doing that now. I am just going to eat my food at home, so I know I should be safe. I have some raw meat I can slow cook, although that was from a different shop too. I will check for any added ingredients, although I don’t recall seeing any.
I want to get my blood sugars back totally to my normal, and I have been very good at being able to control them with this One Drop app.
There has been a clear night last night, with beautiful twinkling stars, Dawn was lovely to watch, and now (at least for first thing) there are clear blue skies as the sun is getting out of bed. I shall be out there pretty soon. I have already had black coffee and some nuts. But I might have my cooked protein breakfast early today, like now when I have posted this (I think I might just have eggs), because up to now a cooked breakfast has always reduced my blood sugars.
Have a good day
