One single piece of advice? What type of diabetes?

T2: cut the carbs
T1 : match the carbs to the insulin
Other types: ? Depends on the type.

Most types could do with more blood glucose testing, whether by glucometer or cgm.

But really, advice depends massively on an individual's particular circumstances....

I agree with others- we need to know a lot more information before any useful advice can be given

Things like-what type of diabetes does the person have, are they on any medication, what sort of readings are they getting with what type of food.

People here really want to help but the details matter.

Welcome.

I would say, for any type of diabetic, take responsibility for yourself and accept that managing your condition is entirely down to you. The medical profession is at best uninterested, and at worst, positively dangerous with its antiquated advice.

I’m sorry you feel this way. You must have had some really bad care in the past. I totally agree that we all need to take responsibility for ourselves and be informed but I have found a lot of support from my surgery and celebrations in my success. But it’s a general practitioner, they cover too much which unless you have specialists will always be an issue. I have had worse surgeries though so do know what that can be like

what I take from this though is again the whole lottery and luck aspects of getting better care depending where you live. I have in the past been concerned about moving house and losing the surgery I have. Luckily I have found new surgeries than are good

so to reflect advice, it’s about being informed, not to blindly follow advice, to not get disheartened if approaches don’t work but to engage and discuss and find your own way through. It can be easy for all of us to say our way is the best but setting expectations even well intended can make it hard for others when it doesn’t work for them

Hi Teddy, I do agree to a large extent but the problem is that you DO have to get the help to manage your diabetes or suffer the consequences, I'm specifically talking about type 1 here but it applies to all, my medical team are very helpful but once they give you a libre, or listen to you when you feel a change of insulin brand might help or want a pump and so on, they expect you to 'cooperate' and if they feel you are going it alone and not interested they sometimes refuse any help apart from the basics. There is a balance here of course, a little give & take. x

I'm with teddy on this one

It's more indifference & outdated dogma, imho

Pretty sure it's different for type 1's
The phrase ask your team, just isn't applicable to T2D, in my opinion

It's docs, 10 mins, tick the box, go.
DN more of the same.
Best part of my care package came from here.

Care, where good is pretty decent
Eye checks & foot checks, .

I've said it before, as have others, but perhaps worth repeating

Despite reading about the growing wave of T2D and the apparent lack of success the eatwell plan has had over many year,

My surgery and others so it seems, aren't interested in how on earth we got back to normal.numbers

No "that's wonderful news, how did you do that so we can tell others asap."

(Though to be fair, I did get a text congratulating me on getting a HBA1c of 40, but pretty sure all surgeries T2D got one..cynical..moi ;))

It's as if every T2D at my surgery has done this, so it's no surprise.

A fact I find very hard to believe.:wideyed::hilarious:

I can't help the feeling that apart from a few exceptions the majority of doctors are just brow beaten by how contained or controlled & limited they are in our treatment,

So give up and just follow that eatwell line, regardless of how they personally feel.

Sure others will say how enlightened their surgery is, can only go by personal experience and that of others whose posts I have read.

what is the best advice for man/woman with diabetes

If type 2

Go find this forum & read up on what actually works for many others.

Think the forum should given as a choice on day one, personally.

Too many waste time floundering unnecessarily.

One most important advice, exercise daily for atleast 60 minutes as this keeps you fit

I exercise a lot personally but I'm not sure I agree with you in that it is 'most important' to do it for an hour a day relative to diabetes. I definitely think it's a great thing to do for everyone (if they want to and are able) but many people manage their diabetes very well without a daily one hour work out.

Some of us cannot exercise, but still manage to get into remission or lower meds by diet.
Yes in such case one has to be very careful to take right kind of diet which has to be more protein and healthy fat and minimal carbs but complex

they might be I am sure, but with exercising one hour per day there is enough evidence and studies available which say that you can delay diabetes related complications.

As far as I know having healthy blood glucose is the way to reduce the risk of diabetic complications. Not exercise.
