What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

Hooray for the bounty from the garden - pity it’s cold and raining

I have an intense longing for flapjack, and you writing about it makes that longing even greater...
I am a person who throws a handful of this in, a dollop of that etc and it would be thrown in the microwave (the oven broke 15 years ago). I do not measure, and it is always edible...
Will you give me an idea of your recipe please? I have 100% chocolate also if it does not hold...
I fancy a teeny tiny square with a cuppa tea...
Thanks in advance...
I used:
250 grams of oatflakes
200 grams dates, ground as much as possible to a paste in a food processor, but being a bit damp, they don't grind down very well, so they were lumpy
165 grams butter
Pinch of salt
Pinch of ginger (I like ginger)

Melted the butter, stirred in the dates over a low heat to make them a bit mushy.
Added the oats, salt and ginger and stirred well to distribute the dates throughout.
Pressed the mixture into an 8" square tin, lined with baking paper.
Baked at about 180C (my temperature gauge has lost its markings, so it's an estimate) for 25 minutes.
It looks done, if a bit dry on the surface.
Left it in the tin to cool but after about 5 or so minutes, I cut it into bars and left it in the tin to cool completely.
It's still warm, so I can't get it out to see if it worked yet.

You wouldn't be able to use a tin in your microwave, of course, unless it is a combi but you might be able to adapt it for microwaving.

It's not really diabetic friendly but it does fit in with the foods that this particular lady will eat. She believes she can't eat wheat or, in fact, any grain other than oats and she can't have sugar, although fruits are fine. Hence oats and dates. If it doesn't work, I do have some oatcakes which I know she loves - she thinks my oatcakes are as good as a sweet cake any day. I don't but each to his own. I just feel that, when others are enjoying my cupcakes, I need to have some alternative to offer her.

When I make cauliflower rice in our Vita Mix I put in the cut cauliflower and top up with water. Then pulse three times. I then drain the now riced cauliflower - might work with dates to get them chopped finely.

Google gave me this...
"Yesterday the weather was nice and I had a lot of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, sweet and chilli, so I cooked gazpacho for lunch. But today it's raining, I smell cold. I would like to eat the hot soup"
Soup sounds good @SlimLizzy
I seem to remember that the verb sentir can mean smell, taste or feel. I thought SlimLizzy was saying she felt cold. Might be wrong of course. I often am.

Might give that a try another time.

That is absolutely amazing. I'll give it a go @Annb
I have all those ingredients. I bought them last week. Not used them yet. I was looking for ideas for a recipe.

I used to microwave flapjack using a glass dish (about 8 years ago) before I was diagnosed as diabetic, and was successful. So I have an idea of the consistency needed.

Mine will be cut into one inch squares and stored in the freezer....

Thank you very much for sharing x

I have never done languages at school with being totally deaf, and although I tried in adult life to learn read different languages, the interest/reason to learn was not there. Although I was taught a bit of written Mandarin 30 + years ago by my Chinese painting tutor Cathy Wu. And I knew my numbers in Chinese then. But I have forgotten it all now....

Good Morening Ladies and Gentlemen and all who are hobbling around due to over doing things in the garden.

Blood sugars this morning were 5.6, they might not be that low after lunch, I’m meeting up with an old friend for an old man’s moan about everything.

It appears the privilege of ageing is you get to experience the limits of what you can and can’t do, one of which is chasing crumpet and if you are lucky enough to catch said crumpet you can’t remember why you were chasing said crumpet.

Now me, me’s and myself must depart and annoy others of a less tolerant nature, Mrs J is a prime example.

Stay safe.

Soup would have been good, but gazpacho is served chilled....so we had fried eggs instead. Gazpacho now in the freezer waiting for a sunny and warm day, which according to the weather forecast is unlikely to be any time this month.

Can see mistake in my French now. Should have said made gazpacho as it isn't actually cooked...

It did work, although not as crunchy as I used to make it. A little bit dry but holding together. I'll cut the bars in half to make squares - a whole 2"+ by 1"+ bar would be too much to eat in one go. Wish I could eat oats and dates though - quite enjoyed the taste and, as luck would have it, my BG was dropping too low, so the little chunk I tried would have stopped the drop, I hope.

Maybe equal quantities of dates to oats would work better.

Morning all from a dull LA which seems to be the weather outlook for August. Only 2 grandchildren now this week as #1 son has covid - testing times ahead. :bigtears: A 5th birthday in Winchester yesterday and a second one in Cambs Thursday but we'll have cake with The Little Guy ™ and sister here tomorrow. @gennepher and @dunelm thanks for sharing your wonderful art. @SlimLizzy enjoy the gazpacho when it is warm enough. @Annb I hope your visitors arrive or at least contact you. @gennepher best wishes for flapjack making. Bazball survived the Ashes if a few of the personnel bowed out so now I'm on to the women's football world cup then rugby world cup. Enjoy your day. I'm increasingly sceptical that is fully possible with LC food if I'm honest but needs must.

Helen coming up today from Merseyside to make sure we are behaving! :)

Been looking at the American congressional committee inquiry into U.A.Ps.
it's interesting stuff but little green men would have to land in my garden one night for me to be sure!
Whatever they are their capabilities are not producible by humans as described.

So remember it's not UFOs anymore it's now Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, trust the Yanks to simplify it!;)

Seen plenty of UFOs but they have wings that flap.

Have a great day all of you.
D.
I remember seeing a light in the sky, I had a sense of wow! Or what the .....!
then someone who had already experienced this phenomenon. Informed is that it was ball lightening!

I don't dispute, that some things cannot be explained.
And I would definitely reveal that even some of the the residents here are on earth are alien .

But, the bottom line is, if there are, we are not benefiting from their visitations!

6.9, up again but below 7 (just).
Another cold start to the day. No rain as yet! Had some overnight! And yes @lindisfel the reservoirs are full and overflowing up here in the North West and North Wales. So why are they struggling with water down sarf?
Isn't there a connection pipe, stand, to help them?
We get ours from Snowdonia, why can't the southern softies?
They take everything else!

Gas man coming today for annual check!
For the supply, not me!

My better half today has decided to clear her iPad of her stuff on there. So I have spent a couple of hours reintroducing her stuff. And then the Wi-Fi decided to play around a little bit. So I decided to reboot the lot. I turned the electricity off! It all seems o.k. now!

Gonna put my warm jacket on and spend an hour in the garden. Trimming grass, and leaf picking clearencing.
I am declaring a state of seasonal change!
It is now officially Autumn in the state of Lamontia!

Have a wonderful Tuesday.
As always best wishes

Big moan. Sorry.
Today is the first of August. Practically immobilized with stress, anxiety, guilt and depression.
These are supposed to be happy events. Things I should be joyfully anticipating.
On the 10th my brother and his wife are bringing my two granddaughters and staying with us for two nights.
So far so good.
But:
On the 17th I am taking the girls home. 5am start. 2 hour drive to ferry. Ferry to UK, 2- 3 hour drive to girls home.
18th my daughter is expecting to have her fourth child, while I look after her three children.
20th drive to visit mother 2 hour drive. Two nights?
Meanwhile in France :
20th our 3 sons arrive for a weeks visit. While I am obliged to remain in UK.
22nd return to daughters. one night
23rd drive to ferry and overnight return to France.
24th 2 hour drive from ferry to home where I will finally get to see my sons who will depart on the 27th.

Not at all happy with this schedule, but it is impossible to change any part of it..because fixed points are 10th, 18th and 20th and 27th for other people.

Driving for any distance has always been a problem for me. Anything much over an hour becomes difficult. Stress about the driving esp in LH drive car on what now is the wrong side of the road for me has me almost entirely immobilised. Unable to think straight or decide what needs doing next. House is a mess, garden worse - so much rain causing many mould problems and huge amount of weeds.

Am praying daughter has baby early. Tomorrow would be good.

Hug for all the stress you are under at the moment. It really is a tight schedule you are on this month.

Indications already there that you are under too much of a strain - "Unable to think straight or decide what needs doing next." Doesn't matter if the house and garden are in a mess. They are coming to see you. If they notice the house, your brother and his wife will understand, the girls won't even notice. Forget the house and concentrate on staying calm and relaxed. And, of course, enjoying their visit.

Driving, while both stressed and tired is not easy and perhaps you should build in some time to stop and rest during all this travelling around. Even getting out of the car for some fresh air would help, as would a 10 minute "power nap" if it can be managed. Not easy with children in the car, I know, but there may be opportunities. Is there somewhere on the way to the girls' home you could take them for an ice cream break away from the wheel? When the girls are not with you, there should be opportunities for breaks now and again, even though it may make your journey a bit longer.

Sad that you will miss some of the time with your sons but you will see them and spend some time with them. With any luck, by the time you get back, they will have dealt with issues about the house for you. If they haven't, it obviously won't have mattered to them one jot, so you can relax about that too.

I'll find out whether I'll be able to eat a small quantity of oats and dates....

Hugs @SlimLizzy for this horrendous schedule.

@Annb has given you some good advice. I can't really add to it. Just to say, come up with some strategies like she says. Write those strategies in a list on a piece of paper or on your phone. Phone is probably best. Write them down, because once you become immobilised with fear, stress, anxiety, guilt and depression, you won't even be able to think of those strategies. Think of some strategies now to help you now and for later.

I have such a list on my door. It starts...
1. Bach Flower Rescue Remedy
2. Bach Flower Rescue Remedy Pastilles
3. Ashwagandha
4. Sit on my swing...
And so on...

Come up with a list for you...and make sure you have the stuff to hand, or the means to get at that stuff - money, whatever...

Sometimes you cannot do it all. The demands on us can be impossible. We think because we are the mother (and also daughter in your case), we should be able to do all this.

Do not wreck your health over this.

Hugs x
