What was your fasting blood glucose? (full on chat)

It is not just women! Or heterosexual!!
Beyond my sheltered experience. Sad that anybody is put in a position where they have to allow their body to be exploited and a stain on our society (or any society) that it does happen. I daresay there are some who would say it is their choice and their right to make that choice and, fair enough, it is if it is truly a matter of personal preference but I can't see that it would be a choice for most to live such a dangerous way of life.

My roots lie in Welsh Wales and from eastern yorkie land.
I can never tire of the Welsh accent (you know what I mean boyo? and the true yorkies talk is poetry on steroids.
A stuttering of t tongue and some letters are never mentioned!
My grandsons talk it and my daughter has adopted both, so a really powerful diatribe is heard on our phone calls. In this North of ours, so many different accents from Scouse, to manc/lancs, to South and East Yorkie, north the yorkie, then the likes of cumbrian and the distinct Geordie, macam and Tees areas. Truly diverse. Add to that the influx of our Asian, African, and European tongues to give our modern language a run for its money!
So many of our words and sayings are from our slang and adopted. Same with foreign words, or plagarised from tech.
It is unbelievable that English is the second language in most non English speaking countries in the world.
And spoken by more people than any other language. Even Mandarin.
And we can't be *****, learning another, have trouble learning English.
Is it on curriculum? Have to ask the grandkids?

I agree with that!

One of the reasons, that the majority of people, know that the people responsible for most prostitution or people slavery or workhouse are the criminal gangs that have a huge bearing on our immigration and how it is done. Never mind the right wing rhetoric, it is not stopping these criminal organisations.
And regardless of what the politicians say, it is well known that there is too many eyes not seeing what is going on, on their watch.
And completely knackering the justice system is a big clue to it all.

A cousin of mine left school with several language A levels and worked as an interpreter in Brussels for several years kind you he and his sister grew up speaking three languages their mother who was Italian could speak and write in 13 languages and was a Professor of English sometimes when visiting their home when they had a number of visitors it was like being in a meeting of the UN I was at a loss often seeing as I was not multilingual like everyone one else there it could be quite interesting though as often not all those there spoke the same set of languages.

Congratulations on your 39th wedding anniversary. Your feast sounded wonderful.

Mr K is on the mend as his temperature has already dropped back to normal. He still feels under the weather though. Hopefully he will be sensible and rest today.

The nurse has warned me that I will still probably need the cyst taken out and wrote some very lengthy notes for my doctor on my online record.
If they are really ripe you can get them out but they tend to build up again and the 'cheese' that comes out is really smelly. Best done after a hot shower.

I spent a bit of time in Antwerp, and of course we used English. But those who lived in that part of Belgium and of course the Benelux countries, Netherlands, Germany. Even the eastern Europeans, are multi lingual. I worked with some on the production side, who could be fluent in up to eight different languages. And one engineer who was educated over here from twelve on, had as many as twelve, I think! He was a natural! It came easy for him.

I like Neil's way of thinking but recognise context is all. Language usage doesn't bug me that much. Halloween as it has become is a whole other matter. Some big differences in family P. The boys know my thoughts - I think they felt hard done by as children although they remember a sleep over in the church as a good alternative.
Oh I didn't know not being pliable was being a prejudiced person.:) it just means to a Christian, Jesus Christ is my Saviour and not Polpot, or Buddha or Krishna or some tree spirit in a tribal religion.

I have a very simple faith, but I like people what ever they believe but we should nail our colours to the mast and not shelter behing the term Agnostic when we are really an Atheist!:);)

True shalom to you all

You're quite right. I didn't get the reference to working girls - didn't enter my mind. I get it now that you have explained it though. I did say I didn't have the wit for word games. Actually, now that I understand it, it's pretty funny.

It's a matter of supply and demand, I suppose. Or rather, demand and supply. I don't imagine that many of the girls involved particularly feel a commitment to a career in the sex industry. (There is a word I'm looking for, but due to my memory slippage, I can't think of it just now.)
It just came to me - VOCATION was the word I was searching my memory for.

I found it difficult getting by in French when we drove down to the Pyrenees when the kids were at school, I could ask questions but I did not understand the answers. It compounded it when a large open wheeled lorry broke our windscreen with a big stone and we had to go from the Pyrenees back up to Toulouse to get it changed. Helen had got the school prize for French so we got by ok.
But not many in that area spoke English or wouldn't let on.:)

Ah well - that's the French for you. Proud of their language and determined to see it respected. Can't say that my French is fluent any more since I haven't used it in years. Last time was when I applied for what turned out to be a non-existant job on the European Desk at the Western Isles Council in 1999. (They were only trying to put pressure on the existing staff member to apply for his own job at a lower rate of pay.) The interview was partly in French and partly in English, with which I was quite comfortable. I would probably take a while to get it all back now. Not that I am likely to be in France ever again, nor working for the Council.

That's come up once or twice on our travels.

I suspect it's a twofold legacy effect of the timing of Britains Empire.

Having, as Lauren often reminds me, painted over half the world pink ... ;)

Speaking English, would always be a bonus if hoping for work or promotions, in many of those foreign lands.

And when English is the lingua Franca and so widely spoken, the difficulty becomes what language should the English actually pick to learn ?

Not that folks shouldn't , but that the choice in much of Europe ( & beyond, I would say) is learning English is a much simpler choice, bringing many immediate benefits.

For the English, I'd say it's doubtful any other language (currently) would offer such a comprehensive package of benefits, imho.

Aka, being able to understand the nuances from any Hollywood blockbuster ot smash hit TV series...(even if it is normally the US mangled English ) & not forgetting, that speaking it 'loudly' undoubtedly helps when abroad....lol.

And as I mentioned, being the first other non native language most can use around globe, to get by if stranded in a foreign land.

Thats what Helen had.. She gave four years of her life to being a doctor to asylum seekers.

Many of the women had seen members of their family murdered and they had been gang raped. It was recommended she should not do the job for more than two years but four years was too much and she got vicarious trauma.

People suffer a lot in this world of ours where we are but pawns to be used and compassion is lacking. Thank God there those who will help.

Helen deserves a medal for her efforts. It must have a severe emotional effect dealing with all the horrors those people bring with them when seeking asylum in a land so far away and so different to their own. Four years is a long, long time to keep going in that situation.

3 am 7.9. Up to 8.9 now after 3 cups of tea and 2 lots of pills. Hoping for an improvement after the 2nd lot, otherwise it's a day for not doing much.

Chilly, dull and windy today so not a day for going outside. Just as well Neil finished the final mowing of the year yesterday. Not that he would have done the mowing on a Sunday - he wouldn't mind, but there are those here who would be distressed and others who would object just for the sake of it. He prefers not to upset people if he can avoid it.

At least it can be said he didn't have a Twerpish education.;)

Morning all on a sunny start here to clock change season 2 '23. Interesting reading about people's language skills. Possibly very English not to accept as @jjraak does that the motivation is to be able to live/work/sell or absorb the culture of the USA. I've posted plenty lately so all I need to say is have a great day to the extent it lies within your control.

Good morning everyone from a wet and rainy time warp start in the dark and dangerous north. the pumpkin hunters scooped out the ‘brains’ from their pumpkins this morning and after drawing on their designs, I cut them out with a sharp serrated tomato knife - just the ticket. The pumpkin seeds have been cleaned and are now in a low oven, drying out. Languages. I get by in English and also German, French (but not Parisian French) and Swahili. French, like English changes depending upon where you are with Tours allegedly being the purest ‘school’ type. I have one brother who speaks very good French, Spanish and Swahili. Another speaks two Dutch dialects, North Holland and the Dutch/Belgian Limburgish where he lives. My sister taught business English to French business people but the greatest linguist in or family are my parents who, having lived in France for going on 30 years, have the most marvelous way of speaking whole sentences in a melange of strangeness. Art bit, quick sketch of a tree and some birds. Hope your day is moving along swimmingly - our street is a chuckling brook! Best not drink any more koffy.

Wildlife nighttime videos
Cat Jade's night ~ she had jumped to the back of the swing when the badger had begun rocking it.
42secs

Midnight has been spending most of his time this last week being attached to me like glue while I have been ill, and has hardly been outside at at all.

Creative...two owls, inspired by Lin Fengmian...
I am enjoying doing these owls.

I need a quick Power Nap. Then try and do something...

Have your best day.
