What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

Creep, creep, creeping up!
An awful BG 11.7 mmol for me this morning.
Was out at tea time and returning home lateish, and hungry, a bacon & egg sandwich around 11.30pm is the likely culprit for high reading this morning, though having said that, my readings have jumped right up since getting home from hospital, with just a couple of days, where readings have been good.

I took a second reading from a different finger just a minute or so later and it confirmed high BG of 11.6 mmol this time.

More effort is needed on my part for sure.
It just shows, if i let things fall back away from strict diet & routine, my readings and more importantly, my health, will suffer as a result............

Morning @Ashybang. Well, it's always best to avoid eating that late at night when you're weary, but if similar circumstances should arise, I'd try eggs and bacon (plus the butter you would have spread on the bread if you like butter), but leave out the bread.

We're all different, but I know if I ate two whole slices in one go at any time of day. woe would definitely betide!

6.1 this morning

better than the 12+ I've been getting for weeks since starting metformin.

oddly haven't taken any for a few days as I felt quite out of sorts for a few days and my fbg is far lower?!

not conclusive of course, thinking of ditching it personally, feels like a constant low grade poisoning

6.3 this morning…yipee. 6.1 two hours after eating (ground beef and butter, coffee with heavy cream)
winter is coming….10 cm snow yesterday (great shovelling exercise) and now the temperature is going to plummet…minus 20 in a few days. Sure is pretty outside but the roads are icy ….I’m staying home.

Evening @ravensmitten and welcome back to this FBG thread. We're pleased you could join us once again.

I'm a metformin user. Please bear in mind that metformin doesn't work on a day-to-day basis. It's therapeutic effects are cumulative. Whilst some users have reported lower BG levels during the first week of treatment, it takes 2 to 3 months to reach maximum effectiveness. For the same reason, if you've taken metformin for three weeks or more, skipping doses is unlikely to affect your BG levels much over the short-term. The medication you've already swallowed will continue circulating for at least 4 days.

I'd consult your GP before ditching metformin. S/he may suggest an alternative therapy.
That said, a LCHF way of eating (with or without medication) is the way to go, IMO.

Thank you, and thank you for your thought out reply :)

Yeah see this is the thing I've read so many conflicting things about the effects and how it works and the time it takes and if it is culminative at all. Maybe I should stop reading stuff for a while. Then again even my gp said they should work from the off.

Re: doctor: Yes, to be sure, I put in an email to them today asking their advice, I stopped for a day because I was very dehydrated feeling, and felt very out of sorts the day before, had upset stomache, which I hadn’t had before, which resolved by not taking the evening dose yesterday. Really having to force myself to eat to take them as well as I have no appetite. only took my evening one today as well so have only missed a day in reality. I’m waiting on the gp to ask their advice.

Although my docs previous advice before was to eat carbs, avoid these forums and you don’t need to test your blood sugar being a type 2, oh take these pills they will sort you out. so you have to wonder.

Think I’ll ditch the carbs again first, not sure I’m entirely ready but with the readings I’ve been getting, I’m finding them harder to ignore.

It’s an addiction, I know. Carbs are like crack for me recently, and probably do me more harm, not that I’m advocating drug use lol.

It’s funny as I never used to be like that with food

Hi @ravensmitten.

There are some persistent virus infections doing the rounds, which may perhaps explain some of these symptoms.

I blame food manufacturers for much of our sugar addiction. Why put sugar in savoury foods like baked beans, peanut butter or mayonnaise? Unfortunately, it sells.

We're all different, but following diagnosis, I went cold turkey on sweet foods and although I'd thought my tastes might change, I was unprepared for just how quickly that happened. Worth a try. Nothing lost if it doesn't work for you.

You know maybe so, my daughter had a rotten cold before Christmas and a bit of a cough a week ago, that went as soon as it came. I didn't seem affected by it at all, maybe it manifested in different ways, or my body was busy fighting it off in the background. I know it doesn't mean nesc that the medicine was making me feel low level ill and have high bgs, like I say, it's not conclusive, or even scientific lol, just how I was feeling.

Thank you for the conversation here

Yeah I know what you mean, it's all highly processed. Soon as I stop eating highly refined carbs I don't want any, or crave them. Its the first step I need to pass again.

Yeah, done the cold turkey before which was best for me. Funnily if I eat meat & veg and nothing else I'm good, lost a massive amount of weight before and put myself into remission. Although I was only ever borderline, but I'm sure I had problems with carbs since I was a kid and skinny, often felt like dieing after anything to carb heavy (bowl of rubbish cereal, cake, sweets), and often in my 20's eating a big bowl of cereal would put me to sleep for an hour after I ate it. Doctor didn't seem to think that was a worry and probably a natural response to the sugar at the time as random bg tests in doctors office were textbook.

Put myself through the grinder a few times, as put all the weight I lost back on and more.

I did cold turkey on many things, including sugar in the last 14 years. My recent cold turkey was for coffee. IMHO, it takes about a month or so to get use to your new alternative, or just go without it! Thanks for the conversation!
