Ketones DR seems very concerned

I was asked for a Urine sample this morning and Dr tested to Glucose levels, she was on the phone as I walked in the door and said she is extremely concerned as very high glucose and Ketones evident. We agreed I would take Metformin and drink loads of water. Just tested and glucose is over 55.5 and blood sugar 18.2. Just waiting for her to return my call, I do feel a bit weird, wondering what will happen next and does anyone know if there is anything else I can do, scared to eat.

Hi, I'm not sure what you are saying here? What do you mean about your glucose being over 55.5? Blood sugar of 18.2 is high but I'm confused by the first bit; which is A&E high if that's your blood sugar levels?

Have you asked your doctor to test to confirm that you are Type 2 and not Type 1? I think it may be worth it.

Certainly drink water and let us know what you mean about the 55.5!

Sorry did not make myself clear yesterday. 18.2 whilst self testing and the glucose strips were off the scale. So ended up in hospital yesterday (GP made me) they were worried about ketoacidosis, I was put on a drip, went down to 17.5 but weirdly when on the drip my reading went up, they asked if I had eaten anything, This cannot be right?I am trying to make an urgent appointment with Nurse this morning. Seems things have gone a little out of control

Well the nurse isnt really a lot of use for whats going on if you were screwy at the hospital where were the idiot specialists to sort things out or at least a dr.

I have a GP calling me soon, I no faith in them though, sure this has been said before but apparently it is not necessary to self test, carbs are good !!!. I am a bit shocked that my levels could go up whilst on a drip and nothing but water to drink all day, I am beginning to think late onset type 1, have though this for sometime but my ideas are poo pooed by my wonderful health team Also have lost a lot of weight this year without even trying.

In your shoes, I would be thinking along the same lines.

Why not write out your reasoning, in bullet points, so that you can make a structured argument to your GP when he calls?

Hopefully you won't have to fight too hard for the outcome you want and deserve.

Well it doesn't sound as though you are type 2 to me. I would ask to speak/see a specialist. Blood sugar that high will affect you. Don't stand for daft explanations. Good grief you wouldn't think the NHS works for us, or that we pay their wages!

Thanks you, I have no idea really what to say to GP, am a bit sick of it all. I went through the same thing when my Thyroid stopped working so well, Took me several visits to GP before finally agreeing to a blood test amongst much sighing. I am now on 200g of thyroxine a day..

Just eaten some scambled eggs to scared to touch a carb.

I'll do a brain dump, which might help,........ or not!

Tell him how you feel - presumably tired, maybe a bit disorientated, and maybe weeing a lot?
Tell him where your bloods have been
Tell him what happened at the hospital - your bloods going up without eating (That last bit is critical, in my view)
Tell him about the weightloss without trying
Explain how rapidly the changes in bloods have been (over days/weeks/months?)

Listen to his proposals. He may just be on your case, and equally concerned.

I would want some plan for moving forward. I would not accept running at those levels, without a means of lowering them
I would want to ensure additional bloods are to be done - today, ideally, but I don't know how that works where you are, or if there is a local hospital where they do bloods
I would probably want a (urgent, if not immediate) referal to a specialist or clinic
Depending upon where you get to, I would ask if there is a community diabetic team I could call. My understanding is these are specialist peoplpe, working in the community and they may be able to take an urgent call

I don't know if any of that helps, but you need next steps, which aren't all about doing nothing new.

Thank you that was very helpful.

I just need to speak with someone who has knows their onions. You are right about the rights about the bloods going up with out eating, that did concern the doctor on duty and urged me to get things sorted as a matter of urgency, he said I should be on insulin. I do feel weird today and terribly hungry, desperate for something sweet for some reason.

Well GP was great, has referred me to specialist ordered blood test to ascertain whether type 1 or 2, now suspects late onset type 1. Picking up new meds this pm to get me through the weekend.

Yes, I agree with Phoenix. One of the great misunderstood areas of diabetes. Mine appeared at 60 and I gather the oldest found so far was age 90! As it's mis-understood many are recorded as T2 by GPs hence the level of LADAs doesn't show up in the stats. Sudden and unexplained weight loss is one of the key symptoms

@lukkymik

It certainly is possible to be diagnosed Type One as an adult. I am approaching my fifth anniversary since T1 diagnosis when I was 63 years old.

Thank you for your posts, well I have been given Gliclazide to "tide me " this weekend, as I understand it if I am Type 1 this medication will not work. I am still trying to arrange and appointment to see a GP for referral to specialist, not making it very easy.Fasting level this morning was 13.3 so a slight improvement, Still feeling a little sick and shaky, also finding very hard to concentrate.

So an update, this seems to have spurred my GP into action, He called me @ 8 the other night. I have been referred to specialist we were on the phone for an hour, last night she wanted to see me this morning and put me on insulin immediately, is appalled by the hospital treatment I received. I am in dread of the thought of going on insulin tbh, I need a little time to absorb this so have defered appointment to next week. Have been given strips to test for Ketones and ordered to go to hospital if raised. Specialist is pretty much convinced I am late onset type 1, blood test next week to know for sure.

you need to get on that appointment and let it sink in while your on insulin. This isnt something you can defer you need the meds now! I'm sorry I dont understand the problem with going on insulin I've been on it since I was a baby - I just know you'll feel much better on it than off.

, Up until a few days ago, I thought I could manage this with diet and exercise and meds, Sadly I have seen people really screw up with insulin and have hypos, I suppose that is the bit worry, just need to get more knowledge
