People that can't say sorry.
Wish internet had been around 30 years ago. It was quite lonely being diabetic then.

I've certainly not been an angel, and the uni episodes where I'd drink 18 pints of Guinness in a night still amaze me that I didn't do myself more harm, but I guess I used to correct, even when off my head. It was a characteristic that people were always shocked at. I'd be suitably, very drunk, then I'd have this sober moment will I gave myself an extra shot to cover what I was drinking. Used to really spook people.

The other issue with carb counting was that when I wanted to eat **** (think bags of wine gums, fruit pastilles, box of ice cream) I was pretty clued up on how much bolus insulin I'd need so overindulging was easy and relatively safe.... And not recommended...

Indeed it was. I know what you mean. Finding a community of people as a thirteen year old, like this one, would have been very different. Diabetic clinics were just full of old people.

My worst time with diabetes since diagnosis has to be the weekend on an outward bound course....
Omg.. Got introduced to drambuiee!! 14 glasses later and a GP called out for a 26 mile journey each way and having a badly drunk diabetic who refused to let him anywhere near her!!
My male colleagues helped me to bed that night.. Got woke up at 5am to trek to find our breakfast!! Still wearing my clothes from the night before! Poor guys (also very drunk) didn't know if I was drunk or hypo so thought GP would tell them!!

Still love drambuiee though.. Only for my birthday now though.

See.. No angel!!

Now you know what they now say... Don't go doing this at home!! Not recommended!!

9 months now, unfortunately soon after diagnosis developed cataracts (probably had highish bg for years due to LADA). No other complications though, but took me a month or two of reading (also around the forum) to get to grips with what is going on :)

In my early days from 14 to 18 I had reasonable control, bearing in mind clini-test to gauge your B/S,which at best was a bit hit and miss, then I discovered girls and beer( I still like a occasional pint. In thoughs days I played semi-professional football and many other sports which probably allowed me to get away with my cheating,in those days information about diabetes was very poor and instructions very rigid I.e every bit of food had to be weighed and there were so many things you could not eat.One injection a day of insulin zinc suspension 80strength this lasted for about 25 years. The hospital I attended the employed a young Endo consultant who specialised in diabetes and a DSN was appointed and I given a machine to test my blood/sugars, it was about the size of a house brick and also porcine insulin.I Then got hold of a novo-pen which was being demonstrated to the DSN but I had to buy my own needles,I think they where about £15 per hundred, which was quite a lot of money in those days. Then analog insulins and MDI and life became much easier,I have always been a carb counter so not to many problems. I am now awaiting a pump which I get next March and a new chapter begins. The only problems I have is I no longer recognise hypos and I have a little background retinopathy. That is a brief history of my 50 years of being Diabetic.

how is the retinopathy and maculopathy now.............

I too am suffering from this at the moment......primarily due to a quick change from poor control to good [better] and elevated blood pressure......

been diagnosed for 16 years now........

I think that is the case with me! I don't like notice any problems with my eyes if that makes sense...last check up was about a month ago so I guess mine still has time to fix itself...never had a problem with blood pressure really...

1 year on the 24th of November, no complications so far.

Didn't have a very nice diagnosis, after falling ill at work and ending up in a&e with very high bg and ketones. I lay in the emergency receiving unit very sick on a saline drip overnight not knowing what was happening. Only to be told the next day by a "consultant" that because of my age and weight (22 & just over 7 stone) that I was type 2, and should cut back on bad food and eat more fruit and veg. I was discharged with a bg of 20+ with not a drop of insulin or medication, and very frightened!.

Thankfully that was all sorted the next day at the diabetic clinic, where they confirmed type 1!.

Been diagnosed since March 2008. No complications but several different insulins and regimes. All good for now, and hopefully stays that way :D pretty much eat the same food types daily apart from weekends, where I'd up my dose for bigger meals :)

Definitely need to quit the fags Novo, smoking is bad for anyone at the best of times but especially so for people with diabetes as it heightens the risk of complications, anyway, less of the lectures and I wish you success :)

My daughter was diagnosed 9 months ago, it's up and down, she's 5. It's good to see how it affects long term, it's constantly on my mind especially when we trying to stable her and she's high. Reading all comments does give me some hope she will be fine in future.
