How much alcohol do people drink per week

Not a big drinker, me, as a rule, but a big socialiser, so a big social session can render a good drinking session too. With friends over four or five hours I can drink a bottle of sparkling, half a bottle over two to three hours, no probs, and very enjoyable it is too. Making sure to eat is advised, and I do that for sure. And a couple of times during the week I would share a bottle over a dinner with my adult daughter.

So two bottles of dry white sparkling wine a week.

When I am not socialising, I have about three small glasses of red wine a week, with dinner.

I have drunk and metered, it doesn't seem to affect my BG levels. Not at all! I was very pleasantly surprised. But it makes sense if you think about what alcohol is. I have had to explain more than once to drinking pals, and even bartenders, who know I am a T2Diabetic, that the fermentation process uses up the huge percentage of sugar in an alcoholic or fermented drink. They seemed disappointed! o_O

Since being diagnosed I have changed what I drink - hugely. But I have not changed alcohol being a part of my life. I did used to have a couple of half pints during an evening at the bar with my friends and partner. But now am low-carb, and beer, sadly, is 'liquid bread' - so they say anyway. Drinking now is more expensive! And higher in alcohol levels, too, bizarrely. But way lower in sugar and carbs.

And I was a cocktail fan, before diagnosis. (Hmmm. Yes. I get it - don't worry!) I tried drinking what the paleo folk call 'a NorCal margarita', as a post-diagnosis substitute - which is a shot of tequila, fresh lime juice, and unsweetened soda. This drink truly depresses me though. (Don't tell Robb Wolf!) Because I was a HUGE margarita fan before diagnosis - the sweet Texan kind. Oh - yum. A NorCal margarita is but a dim, bitter, distant memory of the lovely sweet one of yesteryear - so better, in my book, to avoid such a sad rendition of a truly marvellous drink. And I drink a good dry (and reasonably priced) sparkling wine instead. One thanks heaven for large mercies.

Dont get me wrong, I like a drink but don't often have one. The last one I had was a jaegerbomb at Christmas. I do like a drink on holidays but since starting insulin ive no idea what I can and cant so probably just wont bother.

One night at Cheers, Cliff Calvin explained the" Buffalo Theory" to his buddy Norm:
"Well, ya see, Norm, it's like this. A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members! ; In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine! That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

I don't drink at all - seem to manage fine without alcohol.

Would like to have a bigger choice of "suitable" drinks available in social venues though.

I drink about 2.5 bottles of red wine a week.
Nothing else.
Male aged 68 and I think I deserve it.
Beer was the killer
I drink half a litre of tomato juice daily.

I still drink lager now and again. But I feel the affects now and think why bother. For everyone saying their BG levels are fine you are all forgetting that while you have alcohol in your system your liver is busy processing this before dealing with your BG levels, After it has sorted out the alcohol it then has to deal with the sugar. So your levels may be low 2 or 3 hours after drinking, but it will hit you in the end.

The tomato juice is probably worse for a diabetic than the wine. It's an instant sugar hit.

I rarely drink as I'm always driving. Not a big fan of wine, but I do like a few vodkas if I get the chance. And my summer naughty is the odd fruit cider.

I don't drink at all. Not had a drop of alcohol since my wedding 5 years ago. I just don't enjoy it, the taste, or how it makes me feel.

Oh happy day - just reading this post I did not know red wine can lower blood sugar (though know it allegedly has other health benefits) - really?? thanks Desidiabulum. :joyful:

I love a glass of wine, preferably white, but always riddled with guilt when I do. Tend to stick to spirits with sugar free mixers, but like others on here, there is only so much diet coke or slimline tonic you can drink. The latter has that yuck sweetener aspartame taste

Greedy Humans.....greedy animals I don't mind. I do like meat and fish but choose not to eat it!
With all this going into the office lark it’s difficult to keep up one’s spirits.

I do not have diabetes
I am not diabetic yet. My background:
age: 45
ethnicity: Indian/ born and grew up in India; now living in USA for over 15 years.
Current Status: Negative [checked regularly once in a month]
Last readings: fasting BS: 82; HbA1C: 4.7; Blood Pressure: 105/65
Body weight: 140; BMI: 23.5 Body Fat %: 18.2%

Family History: Father and Mother both diabetic, very obese and Hyper-tense. Mom died of diabetic reasons. All of my younger siblings are tested positive for T2 diab two years ago; I am the eldest.

re drinks: am a lover of red wine, started at the age of 25, used to down 3 glasses per day [and everyday] and be happy. however I changed my lifestyle 2 yrs back specifically diet [lclf ; yes, low fat] and workouts, wine: half glass with lunch only, but not on everyday. That resulted 45lbs of weight over last 2 years. Now a days I am not able to metabolize even that half glass, especially if i take in the night. May be low body fat and low body weight comes with alcohol resistance? last X-mas I had about 3 or 4 glasses red wine and then suffered with acid-reflux and headaches.

I feel a glass of red wine, freshly baked toast, some nice cheese for lunch is the way to go on a big workout day!
