A few asking for low carb food lists....

We may have Type 2 Diabetes but are all different as to what carbs we can tolerate. Its really up to you and what your body can cope with. If you test with a meter before a meal and then two hours after you will see how your body copes with different foodstuffs.

As for me, I know I can't eat porridge, pasta, bread or brown rice - I love them and used to eat them all the time before I was diagnosed - but they all now spike my BG to silly high numbers and I feel tired, irritable and ill for several hours after eating them - but we are all different so what isn't right for me might be fine for you - the best thing is for you to get a meter and experiment for yourself as to what carbs you can tolerate and how much.

Well the standard NHS advice has been for us to eat these foods as there's an incorrect belief that we need to eat carbs. However on a low carb high(er) fat diet, we use the fats and oils in our food for energy instead.

As type 2s we are generally on oral meds and/or diet controlled and the advice given on our forum is mainly to help us control our glucose levels via our diet, and avoiding the high carb foods that spike our glucose is probably the best way to help us do this.

However, unless the book claims that it's specifically aimed at type 2 diabetics, then the information in it will also cover the needs of those with type 1. And they are usually able to eat a more varied diet - often much higher in carbs - but they still need to count them to calculate their insulin doses correctly to manage the number of carbs in their meals.

I like this list of low carb foods. I am in USA. anyone know if USA has a protein roll to offer in place of high carb breads? I am not aware of what it is? Bread is in general a high carb food to be minimized or avoided I know. thanks.

@Kristin251 might know but she doesn't use them.

Cauliflower.
Big bunches instead of potatoes. Cauliflower rice instead of rice. Cauliflower hash browns and cauliflower blanched and compressed on top of fish pie.

HOW CAN I print this list please.

I use celeriac which you can mash with butter and cream, slice in a dauphinois with cream or roast in oil. Now prefer it to potatoes I think it’s got a better flavour and I was a potato addict! You’ll need to test though first time - it dosent raise my bg but gather it does for some people

This is one of a few you can find on internet:
Great Low-Carb Bread Company: "Soft and flavorful. These breads are super low carb with barely 1-3 grams of carbohydrate after subtracting the dietary fiber…even in the bagels. Hamburger buns, white bread, pumpernickle, a variety of bagels, and more…check it out."

Can this be saved to your diabetes posts please.

This is very helpful thank you.

Can it be sent in email so as to print it off?

Depends on your computer and software. I click and drag to highlight the text then use Ctrl+C to copy. Then I open up my text processing program , MS Word in my case, but there are others. Then use Ctrl+V to paste or else use the paste option from the app's menus.

You can try sweet potatoes or yam

I'm not so sure about sweet potatoes they are considerably higher in carbs than potatoes with 27 to 20 g/100g depending on baked or steamed. The clue should be in the "sweet"! 'Normal' potatoes vary from 12 to 26g/100g depending on if they are new or old potatoes and how they are prepared
Yams are even higher in carbs at about 28g/100g
One low carb alternative is to make cauliflower rice or try celeriac as chips or mash - both of these have next to no carbs.

I agree about the celeriac. With sweet potatoes I understand that despite the name : they have a LOW glycaemic load when boiled and an even lower load if left unpeeled in the fridge, to be eaten later , cold. So ok for most folks.
