Avocados

We're big avocado eaters in my household, sliced or diced as part of a salad or halved and eaten on their own. (personally, I adore them with lemon and oil dressing, or a traditional vinaigrette, or even shop bought mayonaise if I'm feeling lazy).

But they are tricky to buy, as you need to eat them ripe but not over ripe. They tend to sit like little bullets in our fruit bowl before suddenly ripening, and you then have to eat them quick before they go brown and horrible (the green flesh browns and is pretty nasty once they (over) ripen, you've got a one or two day window while they're perfect). And there are lots of different varieties of avocado - different but all delicious. Many supermarkets sell them at the "bullet" stage, and sometimes reduce the price if they're still holding them when ripe, as they need to shift them then. On the other hand, some places will charge a massive premium to sell you one that's ripe and ready to eat that day.

I love avocado and they are really good for you a study came out that shows it starts clearing out your arteries pretty quickly.
So I love avocado sandwiches on whole grain sprouted bread. You can make it sliced with cheese or mush it and add seasonings that you like, like garlic or onion powder. Sliced with seasoned salt or top off a salad. Avocado toast, chop up avocado, tomato and green onion on toast, you can add a poached egg, tofu scramble on it. Toasted pitas or tortillas work good for this too.

Basically, take the food you like and add avocado, maybe chopped in smaller pieces to start. But if you don't actually like avocado much then you might think about adding a stronger flavor like melted cheese or onions with it!

And I love a bowl of guacamole eaten by the spoonful! Or a bowl of chopped onions, cheese and avocado heated!

I noticed that too. My wife won’t buy them unless they are ripe enough and often they aren’t.

Buy them firm not rock hard usually though, or with a barely noticeable give. If they are rock hard sometimes they don't ripen right because they don't have enough of an oil content when picked. I like Haas the best. But as soon as they start to show they are barely ripe put them in the refrigerator. I've done that for up to a month. The skin on some varieties will start to turn but the fruit stays good. Just keep an eye on them!

I usually buy the 'Ripe & Ready' avocados from Waitrose. They do cost a bit more at £2 for a pack of two, but they are almost always just right, so less waste than when I buy cheaper avos which might be overripe or too hard which makes them inedible.

I love avocados and eating them along with some nuts help me to stop loosing weight as they are high in calories but low in carbs I am a skinny T2 and going lower carb made me loose weight that I did not need to and I struggle to put weight on but avocados do help with this. I do not usually cook them the nearest I get to that is mashing it making a little hollow in it and crack an egg into it then pop it in the oven until the egg sets I have them in a salads, love them with cold chicken and mashed up with mayo and some salt spices and fresh herbs can be added to make them tasty

When they are a bit soft at the top shove them in the fridge.. will usually be ok for about a week..

I usually buy the ripen at home ones from Aldi they are four in a pack just the right size to eat a whole one. I put one on the window sill and keep the others in the fridge until I need another one out to ripen. I do like to eat them when they are firm

Avocado chunks, or slices, with mozzerella cheese, tomato and basil, all drizzled with Olive oil and a sprinkling of whichever fresh herb you fancy.
Make sure avocados are ripe, and eat immediately or they will go black.

I like my avocados mashed up with a bit of garlic and chopped basil, avocado or olive oil and lime juice and topped with grated parmesan and pine nuts or pistachios and served with crispy streaky bacon or with prawns. This mix will keep in the fridge for e few days if sealed with the oil to stop it browning, and also freezes nicely.

I hate to say this, but I've recently discovered an acceptable chopped frozen avocado pack:eek: which has revolutionized my avocado purchasing and eating...

nice ideas...cheers all

for me..i like because of the fats..and with a dash of lemon..nice.
found baby avocados in one supermarket.
just the right size for me.
cut in half and both pieces.

(the big uns too much, and i hate the waste..dislike when they brown :***: )

I had never eaten avocado. Lat year I decided to try them. I made a mess of the first, trying to get the flesh out of the skin and from round the core. Threw it away. Tried again, still made a mess but managed to eat it. It tasted awful. I decided they aren't worth the bother.
For me they are on a par with coconut porridge and Lidl Rolls - ‘orrible

The coconut porridge I can agree with, but the Lidl rolls were sublime! :)

Isn’t it strange how we are all different, I love the coconut porridge, can take or leave avocados and really disliked Lidl rolls!
