Been invited out to a chippy restaurant today...

This will be the first time eating out since I've been diagnosed 5 weeks ago and tbh I'm nervous. I was thinking of having a fish without the batter and a side salad, would this be ok?
It's totally fine as long as you're not tempted with the batter - this takes some strength lol - our local sit down chippy also does chicken no batter just dropped in the fryer.

If you have the fish don't ask for it lightly battered as this makes it harder to peel off the batter - ask for a side plate and immediately remove the batter and pass it on or give it back to the server straight away

Don't go there hungry- have a little low carb snack beforehand

But the most important thing of all is enjoy yourself, have fun, don't spoil it by overthinking things. Social occasions are just that it's about having good times and making memories first and last - food is secondary and you can do this! :)

That's what I would do. A pickle would go down well and the side salad with no dressing unless it was olive oil or vinegar. You could also have saveloy, the inner contents of a sausage in batter or meat pie without the crust (although the meat might not be of the best quality).

Thank you. I do plan to be very strict with myself so I won't be eating the batter i try hard not to over think things though I'm really good at over thinking lol

Great! Or if they do it, a piece of unbreaded chicken - some places seem to have that. Good advice not to go hungry to reduce temptation. These days I wouldn't fancy the batter but so soon after a dietary change it's much harder to resist. The chips on the other hand, would be an entirely different matter!

To be honest I would eat the batter too. I often have breaded or battered fish (from supermarket) on Fridays, and it doesn't raise my bg much, even with a few oven chips.

Never thought about a saveloy that's something to bear in mind for the future. Think the pies are pukka pies

I just had a look at the nutrition info for the beer battered cod in my freezer. The carb content is 23.2g for a fish portion weighing 190g in total.

Fish would be no problem for me as I always took the batter off even before diabetes. Chips well I have no will power for not eating those they used to be a favourite so I would have to have some. When it is an occasional treat I do not worry about having something I do not normally eat but then I am more moderate than low carb

Personally I wouldn’t be going at all, due to the inflammatory oils used for frying, but I’m funny like that :hungover:
I know where you're coming from and respect your choices but I don't believe in isolating ourselves because of food - the benefits of friendship and socialisation far outweighs any food issue - if there was nothing at all I would/could eat I would eat my meal before hand, go and have fun and a nice big cup of coffee/tea. Nothing is more important to me than friends and family - but I'm funny like that ;)

I love our local chippy, they do a chicken kebab tray with salad, which is way more tasty than anything that comes out of the fryer :)

On the question of batter I have to say that the batter our local chippy produces is an abomination!. You don't want to eat it which might be a distinct advantage. Horrible, soft, floury mess usually. And the chips were certainly variable in quality.

But good chips and a piece of golden battered fish...*excuse me whilst I dream a while*

@Prem, what I have done is not touch any chips anymore fullstop. And now just eat the fish with the batter. No curry sauce either.

This has surely got to be a step in the right direction for me.

I totally agree with you but also see Jim’s point. I guess we have to make a judgement call for ourselves and not follow an overly prescriptive approach too steadfastly
