Coming off Simvastatin

I agreed, after much coercion by my DN to give Simvastatin a go for 3 months. I was wondering what people's experiences with the drug were after such a period. Specifically how much they lowered ones cholesterol level and whether the level stayed low after ceasing talking them?

Can you help?

Hi carb Foods
My Cholesterol had always been good (~3) when I was diagnosed I was automatically put on Simvastatin which brought me down to ~2. having muscle pains I (in consultation with my specialist) weaned myself off and shock-horror it rocketed back up to 3.5 so unless my cholesterol goes up considerably I shall forgo the pleasure of simvastatin (at least till my next blood test!)

Hi

Put on statins 20mg 9 yrs ago, when my levels were good, but because I was diabetic. I lost 9 years of my life to this drug, and you can look at my comments on other posts for the details.

When I came off them I went on to plant sterol tablets, mega dose vitamin C 3000mcg each and every day, heart margarine (best not mention name) and have done nothing else different than previously. I had a blood test done after 3 months and my reading had only gone up to 3.5 from 3.

When I stopped the simvapoison I thought for two weeks I was having heart attacks everyday. I even wrote my husband a letter to read if I died. I spoke to my GP and he said coming off them would not have given pain like this, however, I have read in other websites that he was wrong, and people coming off them can have heart pain fro 2 weeks.

I really thought I was going to die when I was on simvapoison, I thank my lucky stars everyday on the rearch I did on the internet and now 95% of my life has been given back to me.

Research thoroughly and make your own decisions based on your lifestyle, your genetics, your family history and your readings. Vitamin C is useful to research, as they reckon the dosage recommended on labels is way under what we should be having, and we actually need at least 3000 mcg not 60 mcg. They reckon Vit C elasticates arteries.

You have to make your own choice, based upon your life, and research. The Daily Mail often has interesting articles to read on side effects of statins too, but just remember that GP's also get paid for prescribing statins.

There are also intersting articles written about the japanese and cholesterol levels. Japenese persons have been checked over many years. Heart disease has actually gone incredibly low in their population, when their populations cholesterol levels have actually gone up.

It is best to check your good and bad levels as well as your total levels for cholesterol.

As I said I was put on them when I actually had all good levels, just because I am diabetic. There is a lot of detail on websites that actually states that taking them would only give an extra 17 days life if you took them for 40 years......
