Flu jab 2010/2011

Our local news headlines tonight, are of a man critically ill in the local hospital with swine flu - he's awaiting a transfer to more a specialised unit (unspecified).

So i'll take my chances with the vaccine making me feel ill, I don't want to risk a killer disease.

Four weeks ago I had the flu and swing flu jab and also my pheumonia jab at the same time. I was fine after, my arms were sore for a couple of days thats all.

Just this week my daughter was diagnosed in hospital with swine flu she was very very ill and in hospital for 4 days - she is not diabetic and is usually very fit and well.

The jab has protected me, so glad I had it, I would recommend that everybody has the jab as soon as possible!

I really dont understand why you all have a downer on the Flu Vaccine. Surely its better to be ill for a short while rather than end up in a wooden box (worst case scenario) but it could happen.
I think a lot of it is mind over matter - if you think you'll be ill from the vaccine then you will be - be a brave soldier and get on with it!

My HB A1c is due but I have been advised to postpone it or to have it done at another hospital as my local hospital is cancelling all non essential clinics due to outbreaks of both noro virus and swine flu!! Just hope my wife does not catch either as she works there :(

For some reason the swine flu seems to have been dropped by the newspapers as 'old news' or something, when in fact in many areas it is much worse than it was last year. I would suggest that anyone who has not had the flu jab this year to at least reconsider their decision, there is a big difference between a cold and the flu. I had a bad cold a couple of months back and it knocked me for six I hate to think of the effect the flu or swine flu in particular would have had :(

Sure I read yesterday that there had been 10 deaths due to swine flu this year Sid, it certainly hasn't disappeared and like you I would urge everyone to get protected.

I don't know about the local papers but it hasn't disappeared frrom our local news, Our local internet news site says the local hospital has two death from swine flu.

Having had the jab does that mean we are now completely protected?

What about partners, should they have it too to ensure they are not able to pass any virus onto us?

Having the seasonal Flu Jab usually offers about 70 - 80% protection. Information from NHS Choices....

At-risk groups
It is recommended you have a flu jab if you:

• are 65 or over,
• have a serious medical condition (see box),
• live in a residential or nursing home,

• work with poultry (see below).

I'd like to get the flu jab, but can't get to my GP without taking 3 hours off work (I daren't change my GP for various reasons), and the walk-in clinics here don't do the jab, the GP practice where you can go without registering charges £9! and Boots charges £13.99! I keep seeing on the news about how they are worried about the poor uptake this year, if so why on earth don't they make it easier to get the jab!

I have had "flu" many times in my life - or so I thought until I had the flu! - then I realised I had NEVER had flu before - gosh I was ill and this was when I was fit and healthy and it wiped me off my feet for weeks - I always get my flu jab now and have never had any effects whatsoever from them - not saying you can't just I haven't.

"I've got the flu" is a phrase that is bandied about so freely but most people haven't really got flu just a bad cold - flu is a whole different being and I realised that once I had had it! - Never want to go there again!

Sid, re flu and the newspapers. Our local paper today has front page spread that says the death toll is now 3, and the local radio featured it on the news, with plea for those who are at risk to take up thier flu jab.

And what lovinglife said, I know people who have 'the flu' every year - or so they say. When really all they have is a bad cold. The real flu can wipe you out as you say and I will take every chance I can to avoid it.

I heard on Breakfast this morning that the death toll is now 15. Glad I got vaccinated... Even though I did get flu afterwards (not a cold it was diagnosed by a doctor) which lasted for 3 weeks.

Of course our local news being truly farthinking is only concerned with the total in our locality! It is not counting deaths outside of the county boundary.

If they are saying it seems worse this year, does that mean the strain of swine flu might be mutating? If so, is the vaccine we have had going to protect us keeping in mind they were produced earlier in the year?

As I understand it daz, the flu strain mutates every year, which is why the flu jab varies year to year, and we need a new one each year.

The powers that be get togheter every year to decide what particular vaccine is needed. And if I rememebr correctly from last year, it was said then that in an epidmeic the strains would get worse in the second and third waves.

So I wouldn't think that the PTB have been taken by surprise by a more virulent strain than last year.
