Hi all, just been diagnosed with Prediabetes and am struggling to figure out what to eat! I love curries which I always make from scratch using freshly ground (by me) spices. Normally I would have had Rice, Nan Bread or (occasionally) Chips. Firstly are curries OK and secondly is there something I can use as an accompaniment other than those I recently mentione? Thanks in advance, Mal

Hi Applemalc and welcome to the forum.
First accompaniments for curry, I always do cauliflower rice, you can just grate a fresh cauliflower or buy prepacked. I find it’s best stir fried. You can also buy low carb pittas on Amazon, I grill those with some coriander and garlic butter on one side, to make an acceptable alternative to naan bread.
As for the curry itself, as you make your own you can be in control of what goes into it. To reduce the carbohydrate content you need to obviously avoid sugar, high carb fruits (I know some people put fruit in curry) and flour for thickening.

Curries...mmhh.

Home made YOU control what goes in
I sadly have to cheat and use the Indian tailor spiced curry mixes from Tesco's
No spike..but I don't use rice no more

Recommended cauliflower rice, buy in pack or just as easy to buy whole cauliflower and grate core.
o

Or I have used stir fry mixes instead as a bed to replace the rice

I also made mug bread..a pathetic attempt but served to please us instead of the naan

( Strangely enough, currently in India (Goa)
And the naan here, is thinner and less carby then those in the UK ..and so far no spike...)

You could do worse than to check out HeadbangersKitchen on YouTube. Sahil makes some great low carb dishes. He doesn't do overly hot recipes but all things can be adjusted to your taste. Check out the low carb flat breads and cauli rice recipes on YouTube and at https://www.dietdoctor.com

The good news is that all the spices and herbs are just fine, even if they do have carbs you never eat enough of them to worry about.
Ghee is fabulous stuff, no problem there.
Meat and fish and eggs are great too.
The bad news, you may need to watch the pulses, I can't eat dal anymore, but if you wanted to buy a meter you might get away with it. Shame really, dal and rice was one of my favourite meals but then that's probably why I have diabetes.
Best avoid naan, best avoid all the breads but naan is especially bad <<sigh>>.
You probably need to read around the site for a bit as that will help you to decide how many carbs you are happy to eat in a day. You will find people adopt different levels for different reasons and the choice is personal and based on your goals.
At worst some of your favourite meals will cease to be options but curries are very definitely still on the menu.
Careful of mango, it spikes my blood levels like nobodies business, and you might (will, need to wave goodbye to gulab jamun and barfi:arghh:).
Welcome to the forum:)
Stick around this place changes lives.

Yes, I use either broccoli or cauliflower rice all the time now, I have got used to it and can make it a little tastier than you might first imagine. I also cheat a little with the sauce and pick out a low carb jar off the shelf. I have had to ditch mango chutney and naans.

I started a thread some weeks back along similar lines.

I make something like a mushroom or spinach bhaji to go with my curries - basically I accompany curry with more curry instead of a cheap filler like rice.

Hello @Applemalc welcome to the forum.

Have a look for an app called My Fitness Pal as that has a hole list of various foods including curries and will give you carb values for them. I've used it for take away ones and some have virtually no carbs in them.

Obviously rice and nan bread do.

Thanks for the prompt response, luckily I don't use fruit or thickeners in my curries! The pittas sound interesting will have a look!
