Okay, point taken. But I wonder if sugar alone couldn't realistically be taxed. I believe this might have a significant educative effect.

What do you mean by "sugar". If you mean sucrose then you'd have something like the USA situation where High Fructose Corn Syrup (which is rather worst than sucrose) is used. (Possibly High Fructose Potato Syrup, since less maize is grown in Europe.) About the only way such a tax might be useful is if it was applied per mol of glucose, in any form!

Not that meaningful a metric, since burgers can vary greatly in what's in them.

Yes, but if it causes one to pause for thought, a useful one I think.

Assuming we actually know what actually is "healthier" for humans.

I think there is quite a lot in the pubished literature about this.

How many cookery programs are using recipes which predate 1980?

I wrote healthier cooking. Your comparison with pre 1980 recipes is your interpolation, not mine.

Quite a bit which predates the start of the "low calorie, low fat, high carbohydrate" craze. Possibly even some going back as far as classical Greek and Roman times. Didn't stop "experts" 30-40 ago assuming that our ancestors were fools when it came to diet.

I see, this is an appeal to emotion rather than a citation.

Are you on commission or have you just got the 'hots' for Ching-He? 8) 8) 8)

Not at all sir. I am just as partial to Manjula's cooking as to Ching-He Huang's, despite the considerable age difference.

It's quite easy to adapt a recipe without destroying it. For example, paella, byriani, jambalaya to name a few.

That is essentially what I do and, just to show no sex bias, my favourite meal of late is the Hairy Biker's Southern Style Chicken and Prawn Jambalaya but with brown rice and other ingredients tweaked to better suit diabetes.

The attraction of the indian or chinese cooking is that the spices perk up the simplest of ingredients. Chole for example is mainly chickpeas with tomato. The spices transform an otherwise bland meal.

Hi, how's the chinese cooking going vis a vis bGs etc.?

Re: Just a fifth of people with diabetes have condition unde

Hi all,
I realize now after being diagnosed last October I have been within the diabetic range for years, since there is some deterioration in my eyes however treatment is not necessary. Then again I am 74.

This site has been invaluable...I don't reckon the advice I got from the diabetic NHS team would have brought my hba1c down. Having my own meter and testing two hours after a meal is essential in my case, I keep telling the team including the doctor that eating to meter is essential. They feel in my case it's worked but it is no good for most diabetics and they don't need meters.

Proper education and self motivation are the key to success if this epidemic and its dreadful consequences are to be turned around.
I think the medics see a cost black hole and/or a lot of worry and hassle with self testing?
How short sighted, the costs of the disease far outstrips such considerations.

It is (wheat) bread and potatoes that spike my blood glucose and I try never to eat more than 160 grams of either of them at one meal and I certainly wouldn't eat both at one sitting. If we have meat and potato pie..which I like with a crusty pastry, I skip the crusty pastry (I always skip the crusty pastry! :-)) and have some Yorkshire pudding instead, which does not put my B.G. up much.
I eat a lot of veg and fruit now I try consume the fruit and veg that have the lowest glycemic index.
Lean meats are fine if one can afford them but one doesn't know what high GI is ready made meals, burgers or sausage.
The meter doesn't lie even if the supermarket says their stuffs ok.

Re: Just a fifth of people with diabetes have condition unde

I am quite lucky with my doctors surgery. I was diagnosed T2 at the end of last year just before going away. My hba1c was 65. As I had already starting to loose weight on the 5 2 diet I was told to continue losing weight and to come and see dn on my return. If at that time my results were lower I would not need any medication. When I saw the dn I was given a glucorx meter and was shown how to use it and an appointment was made for a fortnight later to see how i was getting on. My hba1c was also tested again.(down to 50) and I was advised to join this forum.
Last month I was tested again. Now down to 42!! I also saw the dn and diabetes doctor. I now will not need to come back for 6 months. The doctor also checked that I still had enough test strips and told me to keep testing as it obviously is helping me to keep control.
I did mention that quite a few people have been refused strips and was told that my gp would only prescribe the glucrx ones. So they probably get these at a good price.
I use the android app on track to record my test results. I try to spread these evenly. If I find one is high say post lunch I will test predinner. I also test when eating something different or when I have had a meal out. On track predicted an hba1c of 5.9% = 40mmol. So it was not far out.

If you are careful with what you eat, it's great. I'm mostly in the 4s and 5s and rarely go above 6.5.

The sort of dishes are things like Bang Bang Chicken, Ginger Prawns with Oyster Mushrooms or Stir Fried Crab with Ginger. A bit of oil, sweetness from fresh veg and, my favourite at the moment, wholewheat noodles. All the sauces are thin though, none of that gloopy stuff from takeaways.

The main benefit I think is that you have a range of tastes and textures. If I eat anything that I used to eat, I feel like I need more, because it lacks something. I was in Austria in July and brought back something I saw on the Hairy Bikers, Styrian Pumpkin Seed Oil. A little bit of that and a few drops of a balsamic vinegar on any salad completely lifts it. Cutting things like tomatoes and onion very very thin, that dressing, and a bit of tuna, and its a super salad. But you actually feel like you have eaten something very tasty whereas with burger and chips you eat one and feel like you need another. Then, when you do, you feel queezy.

I totally agree about the 'gloopy' sauces in takeaways and restaurants and about sauces/oils livening up otherwise bland tasting food. I'm a bit hooked on sesame oil .. it's just a pity you don't get a lot for your money. Even good ol' Lee & Perrins (original) does a good job too in the right place. I keep meaning to get around to infusing some olive oil with things like garlic, ginger etc. as it can be quick and convenient, but that can wait until it's raining!! I'll give the recipe a try .... I've got a bit repetitive with just one thai-style prawn dish with coconut etc. which 'she' likes.

Hi, we tried it the other night and really enjoyed it. 'She' thought it was devine (unless she was talking about me!). Added some ginger matchsticks and I used some ribbon rice noodles with sesame oil. Could have done with more veggies to fill us up which we'll do next time. You've either got a small apetite or you forgot to mention the follow-up bread and butter pudding!!

Re: Just a fifth of people with diabetes have condition unde

I've been buying my own strips for a few years now. I generally do 2 tests a day, but on days when I know my diet has been just right, I may not test, to save strips. I'm a low carber and using minimal metformin 10 years along the road.
